[Texascavers] Honey Creek Cave Dive Results, Jan 2015

2015-02-07 Thread Ellie via Texascavers
Cavers totaled over 2,000 volunteer hours over the two weekends. 115 cavers
volunteered to support 4 divers and 42 loads with 98 going in the cave and 17
surface support.
I want to send a special shout out to those who hauled 2 weekends in a row, to
our sponsors and to Bennett Lee who made 28 trips from Sump 1 to Camp Awesome!
Jean Krejca's description of the dive:
Objective 1: Establish camp B. Done. We leveled two campsites and put up 6
bolts for three hammocks plus a gear line on the far side of sump 1. This
advance camp will make it vastly more safe for future exploration.
Objective 2: Familiarize support divers. Done. Two cave divers, Matt Turner
and Laura Battle, became the second two people in the world to see the half
mile of passage (submerged and dry) after sump 1. In addition to setting our
team up to make future exploration beyond sump 4 possible, this is a huge
safety factor for all diving operations in the cave.
Objective 3: multi flash still photography. Done. The first ever shots taken at
sump 1 and beyond. Thanks to underwater flashes loaned by USDCT from Bill
stone, and the haulers that carefully made this fragile gear arrive safely at
the sump.
Objective 4: new exploration. Well, this didn't happen. We were ambitious in
our goals. We realized halfway into our efforts at advancing gear that we had
about an hour of time savings from last years efforts which were at the limits
of our capacity. To push the team into that scenario was one of low reward (one
hour of new exploration) and high risk (no resources at our camp B for dealing
with exhaustion and hypothermia). We abandoned that objective in favor of
safety for the team and prep for future efforts.

[Texascavers] DATES FOR TSA SPRING CONVENTION: APRIL 24-26 @ CWAN

2015-02-07 Thread Roger Moore (cavera...@aol.com) via Texascavers
Cave Without a Name in Boerne has graciously agreed to host the TSA Spring
Convention again this year. Conferring with fellow TSA officers, cave owner Tom
Summers, and examining published schedules of caving activities in the very
busy upcoming Spring season led to an Officer consensus that Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, April 24-26 are the best available dates for the Convention.

Setting the date means that Mallory Mayeux can begin her always excellent work
at lining up an exciting schedule of speakers for the Saturday sessions that
will again be within Cave Without a Name itself. Please contact her at
mmay...@gmail.com if you have something exciting to share in the usual 15-20
minutes time frame.

Tom Summers has continued his program of improvements to the facilities at Cave
Without a Name, including the purchase of a large projector screen and further
expansion of the camp ground. I've asked him to think about a list of chores
that TSA volunteers might do on a work day to assist in preparation for the
Convention. We had one such day picking up front end loader bucket loads of
rocks from his last campground expansion to make for more comfortable camping.

Details of registration fee, schedule, etc., will be next on the agenda. Please
e-mail me directly at cavera...@aol.com with specific questions and comments.

Roger G. Moore
TSA Vice Chair
