We're having another volunteer work day at Rolling Oaks Cave Preserve in
Bexar County (northwest San Antonio) on *Saturday, May 9th at 10am*. The
main purposes are to clean up the grounds (trash and branches) and to
continue the dig at Niche Cave, which is full of old farm trash and
sediment that is washing in. We need people, buckets, shovels. Bring
your own drinks and snacks for the work. TCMA will provide bottled water
and light lunch. The cave preserve is located at *224 Laurel Ridge Lane,
San Antonio, TX 78253*. All visitors to the
Preserve will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Meet at 10:00 am. Bring
your own cave gear if you wish to enter any of the four Preserve caves
after the dig.

I can be reached at 509-899-0007 or ellie.tho...@gmail.com in case any one
gets lost, or if you would like coordinate more details. No need to RSVP if
you are attending, just show up! Trip will be canceled in the event of
rain.

2015-04-28 Thread Mimi Alexander via Texascavers
Greetings, cavers!

At the grotto meeting this Wednesday, Pete Strickland will be talking about
his recent trip to Quintana Roo!

The meeting, hosted by the University Speleological Society, is at
7:45pmin *Burdine
136*. Follow this link to a map of where the building is located on the
University of Texas campus:
http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/bur.html

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org

Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
happy hour specials. Attendance by cavers varies but this area is the best
place to park and meet folks walking over to the meeting. Then after the
USS meeting, we continue with the decades long tradition to reconvene for
burgers, beer, and tall tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com

Cheers,

We will be updating the web page with additional event and module information.
We are hoping to create a program to allow signup using a web app.

Thanks, and hope to see you there

Call for Papers
National Cave and Karst Management Symposium October 19-23, 2015
Cave City, Kentucky

We are now accepting papers for NCKMS 2015. The theme for the Symposium is
Hidden Landscapes - Hidden Challenges, with particular emphasis on management
issues related to human impact on karst. However, we encourage oral
presentations and/ or poster submissions on all topics related to the
management of caves and karst resources. The deadline for paper submission is
September 7, 2015. Visit our website for more information on the Call for
Papers. (http://www.cave-research.org/NCKMS2015/callForPapers.html).

The 21st Annual National Cave and Karst Management Symposium will be held in
the heart of the southcentral Kentucky karst in the Mammoth Cave region of the
state. The venue for NCKMS 2015 is the Cave City Convention Center located in
Cave City, Kentucky, situated just minutes of off Interstate I-65 and
convenient to the international airports of Nashville, Tennessee ( 1.5 hours to
the south) and Louisville, Kentucky (1.5 hours to the north). Since the early
1800s, Cave City has hosted visitors to Mammoth Cave National Park, which is a
World Heritage
Sitehttps://email.wku.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=ihGU5uxibUma1pMqbB_rUo4sgGIHU9IIJxaIORo_HvTdrwYoLmvIBgfQg1aEKMpSUnO9Qh5WSIk.URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.worldheritagesite.org%2fsites%2fmammothcave.html,

and the second oldest tourist attraction in the United States with 53,000
acres of natural preserve and over 400 miles of mapped passageways...the
longest cave system in the world. The Symposium is hosted by Cave Research
Foundation, Mammoth Cave National Park, and Western Kentucky University.

As the theme for NCKMS 2015 is Hidden Landscapes-Hidden Challenges, field
trips will visit the surface and hidden landscapes of Mammoth Cave National
Park and surrounding areas and will also feature field trips to Bowling Green,
Kentucky to discuss the challenges of urban development on karst.

A selection of seven outstanding workshops will be offered on Monday, October
19, 2015. The workshops will provide hands-on experiences with the techniques
and skills necessary for studying, monitoring, and managing cave systems and
karst areas. The week after NCKMS 2015, Mammoth Cave and WKU's Karst Field
Studies Program will be offering a week-long course on cave management (October
26-30, 2015). The course can be taken as a workshop, for university credit
(either graduate or undergraduate), or for Continuing Education credits. See
the website for more information.

[Texascavers] Karst Information Portal updates

2015-04-28 Thread George Veni via Texascavers
A few months ago Bill Mixon pointed out some gaps and problems with some Texas
Caver issues on the Karst Information Portal. Most of those were the result of
problems in the files posted on the TSA website which were copied over to the
Portal. This post, which I apologize for being a bit late, is to let you know
that all of the reported problems have been fixed and the problematic issues
rescanned and reposted.

My thanks to Bill for letting me know about the problems. If anyone sees any
problem with anything posted on the Portal, please let me know. If you haven't
been there, the Karst Information Portal holds an on-line library of
international cave and karst publications that you can access for free at

Where I can see the drone helping is with ridge walking, checking out
high leads in caves (that have enough room for the drone to maneuver)
and also checking out leads on cliff faces. It can potentially be
used to check out pits before dropping into one, depending on the
 size/nature of the pit.

While it does pretty good in wind, that's a factor that has to be
taken into account, as well as obstacles. We'll also have to keep it
away from any bats, since it's a bit noisy and we don't want to
disturb them. It might be useful in scaring off other varmits to move
them away from an entrance (snakes, etc).

I had a couple of people approach me about drones and caving this weekend
at the TSA convention. I did not get names from people, and anytime there
is alcohol involved, I'm not going to remember who.

If you are interested in drone flying and more specifically if you have a
trip or project that can benefit from me assisting with my drone, contact
me off-list. I'll gladly assist as I can for any projects.
