 Greetings, cavers!

There will be a UT Grotto meeting this evening, although there will not be a
presentation following the initial grotto business and announcements.

In order to prevent such a situation from arising in the future, please
consider volunteering to speak at an upcoming grotto meeting. Contact me for
 more information.

The meeting, hosted by the University Speleological Society, is at 7:45pm in
Painter 2.48. Follow this link to a map of where the building is located on
 the University of Texas campus:
 http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
 www.utgrotto.org

Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for happy
hour specials. Attendance by cavers varies but this area is the best place to
park and meet folks walking over to the meeting. Then after the USS meeting,
we continue with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer,
and tall tales of caving at Posse East.www.posse-east.com

Yes, they just bring TP, and distribute to the portojohns as needed. No one
should run out of TP. Simple, once a day, go check them, leave TP as needed.

Dishwashing is self explanatory. As is the Slideshow Nerd the Speleolympics
Officials. Help or don't. I'm just lining up volunteers early.

And I'm sure some are wondering what the very high profile and respected Loo
 Crew really does...

The Paradise Canyon Loo Crew keeps the Paradise Canyon Loos clean.

I couldn't make last year's TCR, but fully expect to attend this year and
assist with the activities I've always volunteered for, but maybe I could
help with one of these too?

 Cheers,
 Karen

Re: [Texascavers] [TCR][2015]

2015-08-26 Thread Stefan Creaser via Texascavers
Diana, Sheryl,

The optimum time for dishwashing is actually *after* dinner. Cooking pots, etc.
are emptied into the serving vessels as late as possible, and then serving
vessels are emptied by hungry cavers. *That* is when there is lots of washing
up to be done.

It is best done that evening, before it has caked on overnight. In the morning
we really just want to pack up dry gear and go home, not wash the dishes and
wait for them to dry.

Cheers,
Stefan

Ps. That is not to say that we don't need people to wash stuff while we
prepare; just that the bulk of it is after dinner.

 Diana, Sheryl,

The optimum time for dishwashing is actually *after* dinner. Cooking pots,
etc. are emptied into the serving vessels as late as possible, and then
serving vessels are emptied by hungry cavers. *That* is when there is lots
of washing up to be done.

It is best done that evening, before it has caked on overnight. In the
morning we really just want to pack up dry gear and go home, not wash the
dishes and wait for them to dry.

 Cheers,
 Stefan

Ps. That is not to say that we don't need people to wash stuff while we
prepare; just that the bulk of it is after dinner.

2015-08-26 Thread Herman Miller via Texascavers
Much to the chagrin of my family this will be the second TCR in a row that
I'll be missing, so no showing up early and helping build up the site for
me. I'm burning a lot of my time off preparing for the 2016 NSS convention
in Ely, NV and also an extended trip into a newly discovered cave in
central British Columbia that is showing a ton of potential. I hope you
all have a great reunion and I hope to see you all at next years national
convention

[Texascavers] Important news!

2015-08-26 Thread George Veni via Texascavers
Earlier today I got a call from Wm Shrewsbury, President of the National
Speleological Society. He had received a call from the Philippines in relation
to Kyung Sik Woo, the President of the International Union of Speleology (UIS).
The caller had enough information about Kyung Sik and his activities to make a
convincing case that he knew Kyung Sik. Some of the information wasn't clear
due to the phone connection, but Wm was given a number in the Philippines to
call back to help. Knowing that I know Kyung Sik and the international scene
well, Wm called me to see what I knew. It sounded legit, but I advised to wait
and see if he got a call back.

I've now received a couple of messages from Kyung Sik notifying his friends
that apparently information about him and at least two other members of the UIS
Bureau has appeared in e-mails and phone calls in at least three countries. The
caller/e-mailer is saying that Kyung Sik is traveling, attending a funeral, and
needs money. Yes, we have seen such scams before but the level of detail in
knowing conferences Kyung Sik is attending, in what countries, the areas of
those countries, and with who he could realistically be traveling add a big
degree of believability that I've not seen before.

In short, if you get messages or calls like this about me (I'm also on the UIS
Bureau) or anyone, try to reach me or the person in question first to directly
verify the legitimacy of the call or e-mail. These Philippine hackers seem to
be targeting caving organizations since they have found phone numbers and
e-mails of cavers in the US, UK, Germany, France, and of course Kyung Sik in
Korea. I don't want to get too paranoid, but if they are going to this much
trouble already, the next step would be to troll caving e-lists like this,
learn who is going on what trips, and making their stories even more
believable. The bottom line is that is you don't know the person contacting
you, to not believe anything without checking it out first.

Also, just because this seems to be limited to cavers so far doesn't mean they
won't attack elsewhere. They probably already have.

You're of course very welcome to share this information.

George

 bring the tp?

Yes, they just bring TP, and distribute to the portojohns as needed. No one
should run out of TP. Simple, once a day, go check them, leave TP as needed.

Dishwashing is self explanatory. As is the Slideshow Nerd the

And I'm sure some are wondering what the very high profile and respected

I couldn't make last year's TCR, but fully expect to attend this year and
assist with the activities I've always volunteered for, but maybe I could
help with one of these too?

 Cheers,

2015-08-26 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
I'd say seeing that there is some attempt at recycling at TCR. The cooks have a
can-crusher and some recycling bins, I think. Speak with Stefan. Enlist help,
delegate authority. We'll speak again closer to the date. Thank you!
