Folks,

Has a date for the spring TSA meeting been set yet.

I'm trying to schedule some additional meetings and wanted to check.

[Texascavers] Ezells Maintenance Day

2015-12-08 Thread Ron Ralph via Texascavers
Cavers,

As if there was not enough caving going on this Saturday, I would like to
remind folks we will be lopping and chopping at Ezells Cave Preserve starting
at 9:00 in the morning. If you can attend, bring tools (shovel, machete,
wheelbarrow, etc.) for a fun day in the sun.

Also, please let me know if you will or think you will attend so I may have
sufficient drink and food available (coffee and donuts). There is always lunch
for volunteers.

Let me know if you have questions or need directions to the San Marcos cave.

Geary and others---the date for TSA Spring Convention is April 22-24, 2016. Any
further details will have to come from future Vice Chair, Jim Kennedy. It will
be at the Edwards County Fairgrounds facilities in Rocksprings.

2015-12-08 Thread Jim Kennedy via Texascavers

Folks, please belay any previous announcements about the TSA Spring Convention.
They are premature. We do not yet have confirmation on the dates or the site
yet. But if all goes as planned, it will be the dates and site mentioned.
Believe me, after the first of the year you will be inundated with my big media
blitz promoting said event.

From the SWR List, a very nice presentation by Bern on the history and spread

I just heard from Bern Szukalski that he has updated his WNS Story map that he
developed with PA Game Commission and BCI. Check it out here:

Bats Under Threat
This is the longer story…

Bats Threatened By The Spread Of White-Nose Syndrome

[Texascavers] Chronicles of the Old Reading Grotto

2015-12-08 Thread Mixon Bill via Texascavers
Charles "Squire" Lewis kept a log of his travels the summer of the 1966 NSS
convention in California. Three people from the Reading, Pennsylvania, Grotto
(say Redding) made a prolonged road trip that included the convention, caving
in Xilitla area and touristing in Mexico. Along the way they made two visits to
Austin, as well as visiting Hunstville, Alabama. Three months and three days,
16,822 miles. Highly amusing tales of two cave bums and the general caving
scene in the good old days.

It was published as a book, with many cartoons by Texas caver Charlie Loving,
in 1993 as the "Chronicles of the Old Reading Grotto." I have put a PDF file of
the book on the AMCS web site at http://www.mexicancaves.org/other/squire.pdf.
Check it out. Both the AMCS and the TSA still have paper copies for sale (AMCS,
$8, see http://www.mexicancaves.org/other/otherpubs.html). I can take copies to
UT Grotto meeting, or they'll be at TSA and TCR. -- Mixon

Lead me not into temptation. I can find the way myself.

[Texascavers] Spring TSA meeting

2015-12-08 Thread Carl Kunath via Texascavers
Let us hope that the 2016 TSA Convention can be held in Rocksprings for it
would be a significant historic exclamation point.

These days, we accept an annual convention of Texas cavers as a routine thing
but it was not always so. Texas cavers were plodding along
with no such thing until 1956. In that year, cavers of the newly formed Texas
Region of the NSS (not yet the Texas Speleological Association)
had their first State-wide gathering at Rocksprings, Texas. With a couple of
notable exceptions and a few really poor examples, it has been
an annual event ever since. A caver convention in Rocksprings in 2016 would be
the 60th anniversary of that seminal event.

You can learn more about that first convention in 1956 by opening your copy of
50 Years of Texas Caving to page 41.
