[Texascavers] alternative convention trip report

2016-07-17 Thread Nancy Weaver via Texascavers
written by nancy weaver. freely available to anyone who wants to use it.

I have a safe predictable job and a safe predictable
paycheck/pension/inheritance. I safely and predictably preregister for NSS
convention and put it on my calendar. I load my safe and predictable vehicle
with more stuff than the handcart expeditions took to settle Utah, and make
reservations at safe, predictable camp spots/hotels. Using my safe and
predictable credit card, I arrive at Ely/fill in the blank without incident. I
go on safe and predictable field trips, attend safe and predictable salons and
talks about gating caves to keep out the barbarians. I used to be a barbarian,
in fact thats how I got into in caving in the first place. Now I am safe and
predictable.
I drink lots of alcohol/smoke pot/fly a biplane/arrive in a pumpkin to show how
wild I am. Then I safely and predictably drive home. Next year I will do the
same thing. Safely and predictably. That is why I am a better person than
David Locklear.

Re: [Texascavers] alternative convention trip report

2016-07-17 Thread Nancy Weaver via Texascavers
my point is not to disparage anyone but to note that in 20 some odd - the odder
the better - years of caving, what got talked about around the campfire were
the mishaps, the near disasters, the actual disasters narrowly averted, the
crazy ones who lived way out on a limb (Boon, Hal Lloyd, and yes David) the
pranks and antics and impractical jokes. The bizarre and dangerous and
ludicrous. I’m glad I got to cave when I did. Hope these things are still
going on.

[Texascavers] Real alternative trip to the NSS Convention

2016-07-17 Thread Rafal Kedzierski via Texascavers

After flurry of posts about NSS convention road trip, this is a real
alternative report. Mark Gee made it there safe, drove straight from Dallas TX
to Ely NV in 23 hours and 50 minutes, 1477 miles in total, if I heard it
correctly on the phone- so averaging about 60 miles an hour. That's accounting
for traffic in Las Vegas, which according to Mark slowed him down a bit.

So it can be done in one day, and can be done safely. It's not too late to get
there,

[Texascavers] frolicking in Arizona

2016-07-17 Thread David via Texascavers
I should be just north of Phoenix by 1 pm. today.
( mountain time )

Since numerous cavers have encouraged me to drive on to Ely with generous
offers of financial donations, I thought I
would simplify it, and say I have a QuikPay account using my email address
at:

dlocklea...@gmail.com

Any donations will eventually be passed on someday to a cave-related
project. Any loans will be paid back at 10%.

Please do not send too much, or I will end up like Lamar Odom.

So far, the most uneventful thing that has happened on this trip is that my
new SUV did not come with floor mats, and the windshield washer pump either
has a blown fuse or is broken.
