Fuji on the edge of Japan's "Suicide Forest."

[Texascavers] Looking for LIDAR cave data and photos

2017-03-08 Thread gpassmore
Hi All. For the TSA Spring convention, I would like to prepare some virtual
reality experiences with a cave LIDAR dataset of a smallish room. Ideally,
there would be photographs of the area or photometric data with the point cloud
samples. If someone has data they are willing to share, I will get it up and
running on the Oculus and bring it to the TSA convention for everyone to enjoy.
The user will be able to walk around in the cave room. If there data is more
extensive, I can add in walkways for fun as well. Please write me at
g...@passmorelab.com you fit the bill. Credit, appreciation and lots public
praise will go to you for help on this.

Re: [Texascavers] NSS News - Good vertical history this issue

2017-03-08 Thread PRESTON FORSYTHE
Bill Walden, KY, prepared an excellent exhibit on Charles Gibbs at the Nevada
NSS convention. Hope you saw it. And, Charles Gibbs was there at Nevada, too.
Hope you were able to meet Charles and Bill. Charles is still active and owns
several notable caves in southeast KY and northeast TN.
Hear Charles Gibbs speak as a Luminary at the NM convention. I have several
Gibbs ascenders in my basement. Charles is the guy who invented the first major
production metal ascender model! He and his wife are still around. Bill Stone
set a world record rope climb using Gibbs, while I hang on the bottom of the
rope for tension.

two cavers who had huge impacts on vertical caving: Charles Gibbs, who pretty

foundation for the Rope Walker; and Richard Mitchell, who invented the Mitchell

vertical, you should really know about other systems.  These articles are a
great background to these movers-and-shakers of vertical caving.    --Bennett

2017-03-08 Thread Amy Morton
Hello caver friends! Pre-register for the 2017 Spring Convention! $20/person,
$50 for a family and kids under 12 are free. Click this link -

https://cavetexas.org/events/TSASC/tsasc2017/

Registration on site goes up to $25 so take advantage!

This convention is going to be great with a little something for everyone.
There is plenty of beautiful flat grass camping and there are RV hookups.
There is even a nice group lodge on the other side of the park for anyone who
would like to split luxurious hotel like amenities for only $200/night (beds 9

The Hill Country State Natural Area has trails, creeks, caves and tons of
nature. We will be taking advantage of our surroundings by having in field
workshops, including a GPS class, an in-cave rigging workshop, beginner survey
instruments class in a creek bed, a sketching class in a cave and a drafting
class given by the man, Peter Sprouse (bring your laptop). There will also
be scientific and exploratory talks on going all day in the barn.

Come out and enjoy the Texas caving community at its finest! Join us on FB or

[Texascavers] Punkin rigging photos

2017-03-08 Thread Bennett Lee
Does anyone have photos of a rope rigged at the bolts to Punkin, preferably a
closeup at or near the bolts to see the knot? I'm hoping to use it in a knot
workshop this Monday.
