This reminds me of the Sidney Sheldon novel from the 70's called The Other Side
of Midnight. A women named Catherine was left for dead without a light source
in a sea cave. It scared the hell out of me & I never forgot it! Check out
this book if you love a great drama/mystery/romance novel.

The Short Story

Experienced Mammoth Cave folks may have heard of Melissa. She was in love with
her tutor, but he failed to reciprocate her affections. For her revenge, she
abandoned him in Mammoth Cave in 1843 without a lamp. He was never heard of
again. Visitors and cave guides tell of hearing her voice as she roams the
passages calling for her lost love.

In some telling of the tale (and it WAS Mammoth Cave, after all) she contracted
consumption. Her mysterious voice (as heard in the cave) has her doleful
refrain interrupted by fitful coughing.

2017-07-18 Thread Dwight via Texascavers
Good idea, Louise. David: Sell the turkey with a "new" engine and get the Best
Price you can before something else goes, like the tranny. Then buy some
replacement

It's either that or drive it (and your debt) into the ground.

BUT get a GOOD mechanic to check a replacement out before you commit to a new
one. Good, really good, caver-mechanics in the Austin area. I saw someone gave
you names with that excellent advice a while back.

Good Luck. The world has not ended.

He said that I could come get it on Thursday, which will be a month from when
it broke down.

The only part he reused was my serpentine fan-belt. Meaning I have a new
radiator, hoses, radiator-cap, engine, water-pump, spark-plugs and thermostat.
I assume he put in good coolant and oil.

He said the old engine blew a head-gasket out of the right-rear cylinder from
driving it way too hot.

I do not believe I would have ever knowingly driven an engine hot. I had Jiffy
Lube do their routine stuff before the road-trip, and I had paid a mechanic $
20 to look over the engine prior to leaving town.

And prior to leaving Schulenberg with CowPoke for Decatur on June 17th, I
popped the hood and briefly looked at the engine. It seemed to drive fine to
Decatur. It seemed to drive fine the first 20 miles on the way home, back
towards Houston. It seems obvious that I drove it too far once I had realized
there was a problem, but by then all my efforts to fix it in Fort Worth and
later in Mansfield were expensive and futile. I can only guess now, that I
spent $ 1,500 in May and June on the Sequoia.

The current additional estimate is $ 13,000 which I think he threw in a brake
job while he was waiting on parts to arrive. That all means I am going to be
in debt, living above my means, for many years to come. I am about to own a $
23,500 Sequoia that still needs TLC, and with a transmission with 190,000
miles, that is probably worth $ 8,000.

I do not think it can get any dumber than that.

Anything related to me going on road-trips from Houston is probably going to be
even more difficult than it was before.

I should be trying to settle down and learn more about computers and Linux, in
an effort to slow-down the process of going stir-crazy insane. However, that
effort is going about as well as my Sequoia saga.

Bill,

I agree. With all that Park Service has to pay for and for all they do for our
parks and the fact that the Orange Menace's Congress seems to be cutting back
the budgets for all the land management agencies, we shouldn't resent paying
more considering what we get for our money. I've worked for both NPS and BLM

Go down to Senior Pass. Even at $80, it's still a bargain, but the $10
rate is good until Aug 28th, 2017. Anyone $62 or older should grab up the
$10 lifetime pass before then.

I've been buying the $80 pass for several years now, which is still a
bargain and pays for itself fairly quickly when you go into as many
national parks as we do.

"Each pass covers entrance fees at national parks and national wildlife
refuges as well as standard amenity fees (day use fees) at national forests
and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management,
Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A pass covers
entrance, standard amenity fees and day use fees for a driver and all
passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four
adults at sites that charge per person). Children age 15 or under are
admitted free."
