13 specialist divers have now entered the cave to escort the boys out
using a buddy system as the monsoon rains could flood the entire cave
system.  "It's now or never."

[Texascavers] Thai web-surfing tip

2018-07-07 Thread David
If you want the very latest news on the rescue
go to YouTube and search for

กู้ภัย

and then set your filter for today or for last hour,
and you should see a few news channels with current
news stories

look for ones that have the most subscribers if you want
the mainstream Thai version ( but it won't be in English )

It does appear they ran everybody off who was not rescue personnel
and they beefed up security around the oxygen tanks.

I can confirm there is a formal military checkpoint at the entrance to the
karst
area. Looks like a clay road, as does the main road leading to it.
It is
a circus at that intersection. The military don't make good traffic
cops. They
are not even using the right hand signals.

It is being reported that a "rescue operation" is underway with 18 divers
entering the caves. There are many reports with conflicting details.
Apparently the media has been ejected from the site, so expect the rumor

Re: [Texascavers] Any good news ?

2018-07-07 Thread Justin Shaw
Presumably there is a mini-sub currently about an hour into a 17 hour
flight from LA to Thailand. Today, Elon Musk was in LA working with the
SpaceX team building the kid mini-sub. About 9 hours ago he tweeted
"Construction complete in about 8 hours, then 17 hour flight to Thailand."

Elon also has a team on the Ground in Thailand which is working directly
with the "cave experts" and the Thai government. He is iterating with the
cave experts on the mini-sub design while also building an inflatable tube
with airlocks. The tube is thought to be "less likely to work, given tricky
contours, but great if it does."

The mini-sub is being built using the liquid oxygen transfer tube of Falcon
rocket as its hull. Light enough to be carried by 2 divers, small enough to
get through narrow gaps. Extremely robust. The design includes 4
handles/hitch points on front & 4 on rear. 2 air tank connections on front
& 2 on rear, allowing 1 to 4 tanks simultaneously connected, all recessed
for impact protection with secondary cap seal if leak develops. Elon says
it is confirmed to maneuver through even the most narrow passages. For
buoyancy control the mini-sub is fitted for a kid or small adult to
minimize open air, with segmented compartments to place rocks or dive
weights & adjust buoyancy.

Too bad we don't yet have BFR earth to earth transport. Then the mini-sub
could get from LA to Thailand in under an hour.

Re: [Texascavers] [SWR CAVERS] Cave rescue article by a former Expeditions Coordinator for the National Speleological Society

2018-07-07 Thread Charles Loving
In 1925, a man named Floyd Collins failed to come home from a day of cave
exploration. A brief search located Collins. He was less than 200 feet from
the entrance to a small cave just a couple of miles from his home. Collins
had been on his way out of the cave when he dislodged a rock which pinned
his leg against the wall of a narrow crawlway. Because of the size of the
passage, Collins could not reach around to move the stone, and it had
pinned him well enough that he could not back up. He accidentally knocked
off his lamp in the process of trying to get out, leaving him sitting the
damp, cool and absolute darkness. Rescuers found him quickly, and for four
days they brought Collins water, food, and reassurance that they would get
him free. An electric line was run down to him, and an electric bulb put
near his face so he would have both light and some small amount of warmth.

As rescuers worked, the site — in central Kentucky in an area now part of
Mammoth Cave National Park — became crowded with hundreds of reporters,
gawkers, and well-wishers. Quick thinking entrepreneurs sold Floyd Collins
souvenirs. Some who, like Collins, owned other caves in the area, used the
opportunity to bring tourists to view their own attractions. A reporter
named “Skeets” Miller, who was as wiry and small as Collins himself, was
able to get face to face with the trapped man, remove some of the debris
around his head and chest, and even conduct an underground interview with
Collins that captivated the nation.

But in just a few days, the coming and going of would-be rescuers in an out
of the tiny cave upset the balance of heat and humidity. Fissures appeared.
More rocks began to fall. The cave collapsed at two points, making it
impossible to reach Collins. The mood of the crowd on the surface changed
from that of a carnival to desperation. The tense crowd on the Kentucky
hillside grew to number in the thousands, all of them focused on a man just
fifty feet below the surface.

Rather than try to dig through the debris inside the cave, a shaft was
started from the surface to intersect the cave and free Collins. It took
thirteen days to assemble the equipment, dig the vertical shaft, then
construct a horizontal tunnel to reach the trapped man. By then, Floyd
Collins was dead. The rock that had pinned him underground weighed less
than 16 pounds.

The story of Floyd Collins—which captured the nation’s attention and
generated books, songs, and at least one play—may seem like a bad omen
considering what’s happening on the far side of the world at this moment.
Collins was a tragedy in miniature. A single man. Just out of reach.

Things are different now, of course. Technology is infinitely better.
Understanding of caves and cave rescue has advanced enormously. But … the
thirteen members of the Thai soccer team aren’t less than two hundred feet
from the surface. They are a mile and a half from the entrance. And cave
diving remains a very, very dangerous endeavor.

[Texascavers] Any good news ?

2018-07-07 Thread David
As of 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 7th, I have seen nothing to confirm the
extraction of the boys has commenced.

Just hearsay of rumors that non-essential personnel have been moved back
further from the command center.

There was a rumor that the authorities could not find children-size
wet-suits.

One report says the first sumps are free of deep water and the boys could
walk out of those.

The Thai news has been focused on the funeral and I think a boat capsizing
along with the usual crime and religous / political news.

I assume rescuers are sleeping now and regenerating their energy for a big
push in the morning their time.

Lots of assumptions and hearsay for an international-level news story, but
the language and cultural barrier has a lot to do with it.

D.L.

P.S.

If anybody would like to talk privately about the logistics of driving to
the NSS Convention, I am only fantasizing about going, but certain that I
wont do it.

I do not think anybody in my shoes would drive it from Houston.

I could possibly lose $ 1,000 of income, which I sorely need at the
moment. However, it is also just as likely that I will be unemployed that
week. It is the same problem I have had every year at Convention time
since I became interested in going in 1994.

[Texascavers] The deceased cave diver

2018-07-07 Thread David
Here is a good report of the fallen diver's funeral procession

   https://youtu.be/StLmbT88Ag4

Note how the Buddhist monk keeps a string attached to himself and the
corpse.

It is a tough life in third-world countries and a small percentage of the
population gets a state funeral. For example, lots of people died in
Thailand this week, and only a few got their names in the press.

The comments were interesting as well. Two good suggestions:
1. Fabric “diving bell” for the kids, fed by air hoses, in case the floods come
2. Find a low spot that a drill hole could reach, and drain the cave that way
in addition to the pumps. But where?

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gufmxjrqfy08g3v/AAAlg-w8eZCt2ek34shT83lDa?dl=0

This is not really a public folder, but by giving you this link y'all can
download the photos from your browser, but not post anything. You may email
photos to me and I'll post them there for all of us. (The TexasCavers list
cannot allow more than 75 KB attachments.)

Bill Steele also needs some good close-ups of Pete in caving gear, if you have
them. Copy him at mailto:cwilliamste...@gmail.com>>

Sorry, I don't do Facebook any more, so I can't retrieve photos there. If
someone wants to put these images on a website, please go ahead.

Thanks,

William R. (Bill) Elliott

Looking for Pete's (texascavers?) post about Guin's baby shower, suggesting
that we should all try to make it since there might not BE a Pond Party. It was
chilling . . .
