If that is the accepted explanation then...

I have had "work disease," "marital disease" and "Mexican-food disease,"

Re: [Texascavers] [SWR CAVERS] ABC 20/20 Special on Thailand Cave Rescue

2018-07-10 Thread Diana Tomchick
Hi,

About 5 years ago, I acquired a bad skin infection from Pseudomonas after a
trip into a Texas water cave. This is an opportunistic skin pathogen that
results from mild skin abrasions and prolonged exposure to infected
water--colloquially it's known as "hot tub rash". I was wearing an ill-fitting,
old diving wet suit that I subsequently replaced.

https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/swimmers/rwi/rashes.html

Despite the seemingly innocuous name of the affliction, it was so painful that
I was unable to wear pants for two days, and the lymph nodes in my groin were
also swollen.

Their Dr./commentator called me this morning a few minutes before I had to run
into a meeting and wanted to talk about potential diseases the kids may be
exposed to in the cave. I talked a little about Histo which he was a aware of
but I didn't think that was likely unless it was a significant bat cave. I told
him I had never heard of it called cave disease as most people aren't around
bat caves and they are much more likely to get it from birds, especially if
they are commercially raising birds. He rattled off some other bacteria which I
had never heard. I did tell him about E coli O157 H7, crypto, and giardia which
are not uncommon in water and how storm water is commonly very high in
bacteria. He also asked about rabies which I also told him was unlikely unless
they were eating bats. I think he was trying to put a twist on it and I have a
feeling it isn't going to go well.

Could "cave disease" be the English translation of whatever Thai dialect
might be used locally? While in English speaking countries we speak in
shaded and well defined terms and Linnean hierarchies, it seems likely
that, in a less technological society, everything bad associated with a
cave might be generically described as "cave disease." Are all the divers

[Texascavers] another Thai update

2018-07-10 Thread David
It is my opinion that the YouTube channel below offered the quickest
translation of the
info during the rescue, as it unfolded.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5SDnliaM_0

There were other Thai channels with more info and quicker info, but it was
just too hard to decipher
what was really going on.

That all being said, much of the info was not of interest to most American
viewers.

While Thais are proud of this event, I see many other arrogant people and
bigots who think the coach
was a fool, and the boys were too young to be in a cave, and even others
that strongly believe
anyone that goes in a cave is a fool.

It would be very interesting to see the authorities continue working in the
cave thru the monsoon pretending they had
not yet got the boys out and test the PVC inflatable tube, and the
mini-submarine and the
submersible pumps, and even use the back of the cave to train people
worldwide as to what this was
really all about. It would be great to see them continue to hunt for a
back-door.

My bet is that the military will camp in front of the cave for 4 months to
keep people out, and maybe
even set up barbed wire across the trail.

If they allow caving again in December, I would be cave lovers from all
over the world visit the cave.

D.L.

P.S. I had a setback today in my fantasy to drive to the NSS
Convention. My Sequoia had
another breakdown, so I am about to have an unexpected bill of over $
1,000.The price of plane
tickets is not way outside my budget. There is a zero % chance I will
be attending the convention,
and a 0.1% chance I will attend the Howdy Party.

Re: [Texascavers] Media reports about the Soccer Coach seem odd

2018-07-10 Thread terri.spro...@yahoo.com
Something seems fishy with media coverage of the rescue. It was first reported
that the Coach came out with the first group since he was in bad shape because
he gave all of his food and water to the boys. Almost immediately, the media
all reported that the Coach was still in. But . . .  they did not name which
boys had come out, and did not let the relatives know which boys were out. And
the rescued boys had no contact with relatives until all were out. That seems
really odd to me.  I suspect that, as first reported, the Coach actually came
out with the first of the rescued boys due to his poor physical condition, and
that there was an effort to keep that info away from the media.
Just my intuition.

[Texascavers] Rescued Thai Boys Being Watched for Illnesses Caught from Cave Animals

2018-07-10 Thread Dwight

>From Scientific American July 10, 2018

Rescued Thai Boys Being Watched for Illnesses Caught from Cave Animals

Medical responders will be on the lookout for signs of infection

* By Dina Fine Maron on July 10, 2018

Thai police stand guard at the Tham Luang cave area as operations continue for
the 12 boys and their coach trapped at the cave in Khun Nam Nang Non Forest
Park in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province on July 8, 2018. Credit:
Lillian Suwanrumpha Getty Images

Youth soccer team members rescued more than two weeks after sudden flooding
trapped them in a cave complex in Thailand are now convalescing at a hospital
in the northern city of Chiang Rai. In addition to treating the boys for
potential dehydration, malnutrition and oxygen depravation, their doctors also
plan to closely monitor them for symptoms of diseases that may have been
transmitted by animals living in the cave system. Operations were underway at
the time of publication to rescue the 12 boys (ages 11 to 17) and their coach.

The “next step is to make sure those kids and their families are safe, because
living in a cave has a different environment, which might contain animals that
could transmit…disease,” news reports quoted a statement from Chiangrai
Prachanukroh Hospital as saying. The boys and their family members have been
told to watch for symptoms such as headache, nausea, muscle pain or difficulty
breathing, the reports added.

Yet based on the location where the boys were trapped—more than four kilometers
from the cave complex’s main entrance, past some fully submerged passages—and
the fact they have been swimming out wearing full scuba face masks, it seems
unlikely that they were living with bats in the cave or breathed in
bat-associated pathogens during their rescue, several infectious disease
experts told Scientific American. “It’s hard to imagine bats got that deep into
the cave because of all those narrow passageways, but it is possible,” says Ian
Lipkin, a zoonotic expert and professor of epidemiology at the Mailman School
of Public Health at Columbia University. “It’s unlikely that there would be
many animals in there,” notes Jonathan Epstein, a veterinarian and
epidemiologist at EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit organization that studies
pandemics and how to prevent them. Bats typically like to roost in areas they
can easily enter and exit, not in places that fully flood, he adds.

Bats in Thailand have been linked with a wide range of viruses—including Nipah,
which can cause brain inflammation, and others that are similar to severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS)—Lipkin says. But it seems more likely the boys
would have been exposed to infection-causing bacteria when they swam through
the dirty water with cuts and scrapes. “If you are trying to prioritize issues
with respect to health care for these kids, number one would be psychological
damage and second will be bacterial infections from the cuts and scrapes they
may have encountered—so things like tetanus,” Lipkin says.

When the boys first receive medical care they will be asked what elements they
were exposed to and if they saw any bats or bat guano, says Amesh Adalja, an
infectious disease doctor and a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for
Health Security. Rabies, for example, is often treated prophylactically if
someone was known to be sleeping in the presence of a bat. “But if there were
no bats in the cave, that will remove a lot of concerns about things like
rabies as well as concerns about dangerous diseases spread by inhaling infected
bat droppings,” Adalja says.

One of the chief challenges for the boys’ care team will be teasing apart which
health problems are due to dehydration and stress and which might be signs of
infection, because the symptoms can look similar, Adalja notes. Fever and an
elevated heart rate could be due to any of those factors, he says. “These are
all things you would expect to see in someone under this type of severe
stress—not knowing if they would live or die and then going through this
harrowing rescue.”

Other than treating any scrapes and bruises with antiseptic to stave off
infection, there may be relatively common gastrointestinal problems that will
also need to be watched. The team would have defecated in the cave and may have
drunk contaminated water as a result, Adalja says—and that water may have also
been teeming with bacteria that surged in with the rainwater. In the days
ahead, he says, “it’s important to do a head-to-toe examination and think about
what they were exposed to in that cave and in the water.”

Re: [Texascavers] ABC 20/20 Special on Thailand Cave Rescue

2018-07-10 Thread PRESTON FORSYTHE
I was starved for 3 weeks once in the Army in Ranger school. We had one small
meal a day, that is all, while working, mostly hiking with a 70 lb. pack, 20
hours a day. The 3 weeks prior we only had 2 meals a day. The last exercise was
72 hours, non-stop, walking, level ground this time in north Florida, still
carrying a 70 lb pack. We finished at daylight. They fed us the largest
breakfast you have even seen. Eggs, waffles with ice cream, bacon, saugage, the
works. Within 15 minutes of finishing breakfast eveyone of us, all 200, threw
up, very sick and miserable. The purpose of this-you can do it if you have to.
I fully understand why those trapped teenagers have only been fed very simple
rice meals since they were found and why they are closely monitored. They want
bbq pork but only get simple rice.

A number of psychologists interviewed on CNN have been asked to speculate on

Live Science updated this morning their article about the potential health
reasons for quarantining the Thai kids and coach.

It’s so frustrating that the doctor from Johns Hopkins mentioned bats and
rabies (3rd paragraph).

[Texascavers] Survival question

2018-07-10 Thread David
If the boys in Thailand were drinking cave water, then

They were getting enough fluid to keep their heart pumping.

There are some minerals in the water like calcium and maybe iron.

I have heard of people that ate dirt to survive.

How much longer could they have survived ?

What should they have had in an ideal survival situation ?

Krill capsules ? Vitamins ? Nuts ? Dried fruit ? Yogurt ? Hummus ?
Dried shrimp ? Jerky ? Sardines ? Tuna ? Cann of beans ? Seaweed ? Tofu
?
Milk ?

Thanks Mike for posting those Pete pictures.
If a collection of Pete Strickland CaveTex pictures, remarks and tributes are
assembled into a booklet, I would like to purchase a copy or two. maybe that
could also include Pete Facebook posts, which I do not receive.
Pete was one of my first 1307 1/2 Kirkwood caving buddies and we will all miss
him. I could tell story after story.
On Monday afternoon for 4 hours at the Helena NSS Convention there will be a
session on the Kirkwood Caving Community of the '70's and early '80's. Maria
Perez, John Wilson, Frank Binney and Bill Steele will moderate and chair the
afternoon.

Preston and Shari Forsythe in KY.  We were around Kirkwood for 6 years between
1972 and 1978.
