[Texascavers] Carbide Light

2019-04-14 Thread PRESTON FORSYTHE
A local Thom Bresh concert last night was great and a break from other things.
You may know Thom was son of Merle Travis, a famous thumbpicking guitar player
who wrote over 900 songs like 9 Pound Hammer and Dark as Dungeon. Well, Thom is
some story teller as well as guitar player-performer and he told a fine story
on how Merle got the inspiration to write "16 Tons."
It was like looking into a long coal mine tunnel with a single carbide light
pointed toward him from far away down the tunnel. he went into a trance
and the words to a song started coming to himThe phrase "Owe my sole to
the country store," was repeated often by his Mom around the house, and a
reason she could not buy Merle a new bicycle.Plus, Merle had been told to
write folk songs as they were very popular around 1946, incidently the year I
was born. Merle wrote 16 tons in less than a night. Merle at first did not
especially like the song but in 1957, after Tennessee Ernie Ford sold 5 million
copies, it became Merle's favorite song.
Come on up to Muhlenberg Co., KY and I will give you a tour of the house Merle
Travis was born in Nov. 2017. We also have a Thumbpicker Hall of Fame Museum
and a Mercantile and Coal Mining Museum. If the Merle Travis Center is open it
has a wonderful collection of Merle's guitars and assorted stuff.
Do you think a LED light will ever cast a "trance" and cause a spell?

Preston

[Texascavers] Mammoth Cave Ferry Closed This Summer

2019-04-14 Thread PRESTON FORSYTHE
Note to anyone coming to Mammoth Cave NP…the ferry is closing for major
renovations, between May 1st and mid-November. As I understand it, the road is
going to be recontoured and a canoe launch area is going to be added.
This post copied from  a KY birder who leads tours 3 times/wk at MaCa.

[Texascavers] caving video of the year ?

2019-04-14 Thread David
I would like to nominate the video in the link below as 2019 CaveTex Caving
Video of the Year
( so far )

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_t-tGhrVpc

You might want to turn the music down - especially if you are annoyed by
modern Hebrew folk music ( being played by the Prague Symphony Orchestra. )

It has most of the elements that a good caving video should have.

Resolution might default to 720p, but you can set it at 1080p.

That all being said, the guy standing on the edge of a pit ( at 3:47 ) with
his
back to a ledge, and not tied into a rope is a total imbecile.

I once predicted many years ago that future cavers would cave with their
smartphones, and people indicated then that I was retarded.I was not
condoning the
idea or recommending it, but my 6th sense foresaw it happening someday.

Would you do a deep pit with the rope rigged to a piton hammered into salt
or breccia ?

I am only going to give this video 3 stars out of 5 though. There is no
map of the cave, nor subtitles,
nor an explanation or introduction about what the interest is in this
particular cave ( except for one short dialogue,
which should have been filmed in the cave or in front of a large map of the
cave and without
the wind blowing into the microphone. )I probably should deduct another
star for going to all that
trouble to have Hebrew folk music and not including a shofar. That is
almost sacrilegious. I just
find the choice of music distracting. There are probably better folk
songs.

However, it looked like a fun trip, and I like the t-shirts. I would
have loved to have done something
like that in my lifetime, but I do not see that happening now.

David Locklear

P.S. I have found watching YouTube videos is better with a cold bottle of
Fentiman's Ginger Beer
( purchased at Big Lots )

Dave Brook forwarded this request to me. Orion says he is not up on the
subject, and Rune is down in Mexico right now...so, does anyone else
familiar with Bustamante have an answer for Michelle? Can she get the
permit in town, or does it have to be at the State level?
