Geary and others---the date for TSA Spring Convention is April 22-24, 2016. Any
further details will have to come from future Vice Chair, Jim Kennedy. It will
be at the Edwards County Fairgrounds facilities in Rocksprings.

[Texascavers] TSS Work Session this week

2011-01-11 Thread Ann Scott

Cavers:
There is a scheduled second Wednesday work session of the Texas
Speleological Survey on January 12th, tomorrow, at the JJ Pickle
Research Center on Burnet Road north of highway 183. Both publication
sales and the library will be open. We will be working on many
projects such as our office computer system, scanning more maps,
filing publications in the library, and doing other administrative
chores as needed. If you have a particular cave you would like to
know more about, this is a good time to look it up.

The door will be open at 5:00 p.m. and stay open till we adjourn. The
TSS office phone has been removed so if you get lost or stopped by the
guard, call me or someone you think might be there (this week, Ron
Ralph at cell 797-3817 or Ann Scott at cell 731-5823). Remember it is
best to arrive before 6:00 pm, or the gate guards might not let you in!

The TSS facility is on the third floor of building 18-A at PRC, which
is located in northwest Austin between Research and Braker, and Mopac
and Burnet. The entrance is on Burnet Road, just north of the light
at Rutland. Building 18-A is labeled“TM2” on UT’s PRC map located at http://www.utexas.edu/maps/prc/areas/sw.html
, in case you need more detail, or get the directions from the TSS
website (below).

If you have questions or problems, please contact Ron at
ronralph(at)austin.rr.com or the office manager, Jim Kennedy. Please
go tohttp://www.utexas.edu/tmm/sponsored_sites/tss/tsscalendar.htm for
additional information.

We hope to see you there tomorrow!

Re: [Texascavers] TCMA Auction Results from TSA Spring Convention 2010

2010-04-12 Thread Ann Scott
Arron wishes to also extend his thanks to Saj Zappitello for helping
out at the TCMA Auction. He realized he was mistaken with the names in
the posting to Texascavers...I think he was just having a difficult
time keeping all the young, attractive women in order! ;-)

We had a great time and thanks to all who bought items and who helped
out!!!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the TCMA Auction at the

The final numbers came in: the auction raised $3430 to help keep up
our cave preserves. Many thanks to Crash, Ann Scott, and Ellie
Thoene for putting on a great auction and evening show! And big
thanks to the TCC, TSA, and Ellie for putting on such a wonderful
event in beautiful Cedar Park.

The TCMA and its members work hard to make sure we have places to go
caving. The generous support of the caving community in fundraising
activities such as the auction and garage sale during TCR go a long
ways to cover general expenses. Thank you for supporting Texas
Caving and the TCMA.

[Texascavers] TSS Work session this Wednesday, the 14th--Part II re-do!!

2009-10-12 Thread Ann Scott

Hello again Cavers!

I'm doing a re-posting of the TSS work session this Wednesday the 14th
and putting out a call for assistance...we could use some help with
loading Ron Ralph's truck with our TSS/TSA tents, goods, tables, etc.
for our fun-filled weekend at TCR!!! With enough folks it shouldn't
take too long to load up the stuff. So, please stop by if you can.
After we get that taken care of we'll work on other little projects as
time permits.

As a reminder, the door will be open at 5:00 p.m. and stay open till
we adjourn. The TSS office phone is 475-8802 if you get lost or
stopped by the guard. Remember it is best to arrive before 6:00 pm, or
the gate guards might not let you in! If you have questions or
problems, please contact ronra...@austin.rr.com or call on his cell:
797-3817.

Please go to http://www.utexas.edu/tmm/sponsored_sites/tss/tsscalendar.htm
 for additional information.
Map to the place is at: http://www.utexas.edu/maps/prc/ On PRC map 2
("NW Area"), 18-A is the little building just above the "ra" in
"Granberry". Park to the south in the PETEX lot across the street
(Read Granberry Trail) from building 18-A

Thanks!

[Texascavers] Thanks (finally) to everyone who helped Airport and Transportation at the ICS!

2009-07-28 Thread Ann Scott
I was still working until 4:30pm on Monday on the ICS. We got the last
shuttle of participants off to the Airport at 3:00pm. We delivered the
last of the vans to San Antonio and finished off our paperwork. There
are still some more minor things to do but it pales in comparison with
the work we accomplished since we began on the 16th! I want to extend
my gratitude to all of those who helped in some way to make the
Transportation aspect such a success, which includes the Airport,
Hotel, and Event shuttling. We had so many people helping I know I am
unable to list them all, so I’m sorry, but know your efforts and
dedication are appreciated! Thanks also for putting up with my “high
energy” and running around like a gerbil…it’s the mode I get into in
order to get stuff done. I think it worked.

Airport Help: The following folks helped with both assisting in
greeting arrivals and driving to get folks to Kerrville or helping
with other aspects of support:

Heather Tucek, without whom I could not have done this job! She was my
number one assistant!
Jenni Arburn, who put in long days of dedication and got us a phone
charger!

Christina Ceballos and Renee Skwara who greeted folks.

Sue Schindel, for moving people, offering their house, and greeting
folks!

Aspen Schindel, for getting food for hungry people!

Oscar Berrones for helping inside the airport and also driving

Michelle Bryant, for helping out way beyond I ever expected! Thanks so
much!

Joe Ranzau and Devra Heyer for going to the Train Station

Airport Drivers: Thanks so much for pushing yourselves to the limits
to get folks to Kerrville or back to the airport again…I’m sorry I put
y’all through that! I'm sorry if I left someone off the list.
Denise Prendergast, Don Cooper, Dever Heyer, Alex Benavente, Zach
Schudrowitz, Oscar Berrones, Joe Mitchell, Rob Bisset, Melanie
Alspaugh, Geary and Sue Schindel

Other Transporation: Cavers who helped with either shuttling or
picking up or returning the vans. Sorry if I left you off the list.

David Locklear, Kevin McGowan, Sara Ranzau, Bill Steele, Kurt Menking,
Dale Barnard, Bob Cowell, Steve Bryant, Kim Maloy, Geary Schindel,
Lyndon Tiu, Ernie Garza, Stefan Creaser, Jill Orr, Rick Corbell, Linda
Palit, Joe Ranzau, Gail Denkhaus, John Hegemier

There were many other folks who helped with shuttling to Banquets. We
had so many step up that we lost track of who helped with driving on
those days! Many thanks for those drove!!

Don Broussard was in charge of the Hotel Shuttling and had a small
army of folks helping him. All of his efforts and dedication, and
those of his drivers, are greatly appreciated! Get some sleep DON!
Once again, thanks to all who helped drive, including those who helped
with caving and cultural trips! I know that Travis Scott and Joe
Mitchell are appreciative of your assistance!

I know I speak for Don Arburn, too, when I say that we couldn’t have
done our jobs without your volunteerism and dedication. Thank you all.

[Texascavers] Looking for help to give ICS participants a place to stay or a ride!

2009-05-31 Thread Ann Scott

Dear San Antonio area cavers---

I'm looking for any folks who are NOT going to the ICS early and who
may be able to pick up some folks at the Amtrak train station and put
them up for a night and then deliver them to the Airport the next
morning for free shuttle transportation? Or, would a volunteer driver
be willing to pick them up that late and bring them to Kerrville?

I have 2 people arriving at 10:25 pm at the Amtrak station on the
evening of Friday the 17th. I also have 4 people arriving the evening
of the 18th at 10:25 pm. If you think you could help out, please
contact me off list ASAP at mayaca...@oztotl.com to get more details.

Thanks!
Ann Scott, ICS Airport and Transportation Committees

[Texascavers] Vendors and Book Sales at TCR

2008-10-08 Thread Ann Scott

Hey y'all!

Just a quick note to say that the TSS will be having their
publications for sale. The TSA store will have lots of cool things
for sale, too! Look for the AMCS publications to be for sale in the
same area!

Don't forget to bring objects to donate for sale at the TCMA garage
sale on Saturday and help raise money to buy more caves!

Also, I just finished updating the GGG website
(www.gonzoguanogear.com) and Rebecca will be at TCR with lots of
speleo-gear and updated catalogs!

I'm sure we'll have other great vendors at TCR selling more gear, t-
shirts, jewelry, and hopefully, massages!

So in the words of Bill Mixon a couple days ago---Bring money!

See you this weekend!
Ann

Re: [Texascavers] Caves under the Pyramid of the Sun

2008-09-22 Thread Ann Scott

Matt et al.,
With some journalists, they just don't get their information correct
100% of the time! I looked at this article and pretty much it's got
some glaring errors. Building upon what Allan Cobb already posted, the
cave has been open up for researchers and wasn't sealed up. The
article notes: The caves were discovered during the 1970s; however,
they were immediately sealed up. Also, most of the information
collected at the time of the discovery was lost forever.
That's pretty much not true and in fact I'm co-organizing a symposium
on cave archaeology next year that will have 3 of the major
investigators from the 1970s plus Rebecca Sload (FAMSI project)
talking about their findings over the years! The information was never
lost...much has been published on it but a major synthesis hasn't been
done but hopefully is close. This future work mentioned in the
softpedia article will complement what's already been done, which is
extensive, just not very public. I'm unsure of all the players in the
game but hopefully they all get along and the public can benefit from
their full investigations! We shall see!

I just read this. It may have been posted before and I just missed
it. Does anyone have more information about how it's going or what's
been discovered?

Re: [Texascavers] Help needed

2008-04-03 Thread Ann Scott

Cavers,

I just talked to Crash and it appears that we will be helping out at
3:15pm instead when a small army will appear to assist in the
hauling. If you do want to help, show up then, otherwise we will
definitely be done by 5:00pm today!

Thursday, April 3, at the JJ Pickle Research Campus. Please come
give a hand if you are free around 5:00pm. Everything is on the
third floor and gets heavy as the evening wears on. And bring your
checkbooks to Kerrville this weekend for cave books, map CDs and
TSA gear. Call if you need directions.
