Greetings, cavers!

At the next UT grotto meeting (Wednesday, Feb 1) we will have a guest
speaker, Jim Sansom, who will talk to us about the discovery of Inner Space
Caverns. Early in his career as an engineering geologist, Jim had the
fortune of drilling into a cave during the construction of I-35 and became
the second explorer to enter what is now known as Inner Space Caverns. Jim
is a UT graduate, BS Geology 1963. He retired from the State of Texas
having worked for 33 years and continues to consult independently in
central Texas.

[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting - Jan 18

2017-01-14 Thread Aubri Jenson via Texascavers
Greetings, cavers!

This week Wednesday we will hear from Jim "Crash" Kennedy, who will talk
about recent exploration in Nuevo Leon, Mexico and the discoveries that
were made over a week long expedition in November 2016.
Rancho Minas Viejas is a 2800 hectare (11-square-mile) ranch in the
Sierra de Iguanas of Nuevo Léon containing silver and lead mines
dating back to 1700, an abandoned mining town, and hundreds of caves.
First visited by Texas cavers around 1980, it is most famous for
483m-deep Pozo de Montemayor, mapped in the early 90s. However, many leads
remained before access was lost. In 2015 trips restarted with a goal of
adding unsurveyed passages to the map, but loss of the old
survey data changed this objective to resurveying the whole cave. We
also wanted to more accurately (i.e., with GPS) locate the other caves
on the ranch, and find new caves that may potentially provide a higher
entrance to Montemayor.

Greetings, cavers!
At the grotto meeting this week, Benjamin Schwartz will present on cave
exploration in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana! This includes Tears of
the Turtle, the deepest known cave in the continental US at over 1,600 ft
below ground surface. It is a challenging cave not only for its depth, but
for cold temperatures, sucking mud, and a 22 mile hike to get to the
entrance. In July, Ben was part of a team that camped at the bottom of
Tears to continue survey...and it still goes!

Note: We will continue meeting in Burdine 116 for the Fall semester. (This

Association, held at Colorado Bend State Park.

[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting this Wednesday, Feb 17!!

2016-02-14 Thread Aubri Jenson via Texascavers
Greetings, cavers!

At the grotto meeting this Wednesday, Matt Zappitello will be presenting on
his recent trip to Montemayor, a deep cave in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In
November 2015, a team of cavers continued survey where exploration left off
over twenty years ago. Much of the trip was resurvey, but they also
discovered new areas and have rekindled the excitement for that cave in a
new generation of cavers!

The meeting, hosted by the University Speleological Society, is at 7:45pm in
Painter 2.48. Follow this link to a map of where the building is located on
the University of Texas campus:
http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html
