Re: [Texascavers] Don Arburn and the TexasCavers listserve
I have never before tried to post to the TX list, but this morning I was moved to bring up the listserv troll issue on my own FB page because of the conversation here about it and on Tag-net, and now have decided to repost it it here. Honestly, I am not a TX caver. I am on this list simply because of the NSS News column I used to author, but I enjoy reading what y'all post and I hope you can tolerate my lurking. This is what I wrote on FB: "I just now read a homage to an oldtimer on an old-fashioned listserv, and in the next sentence read that the oldtimer no longer subscribes to that listserv because of trolls. One of the nice things about FB is that we can block trolls, and as a result, there are fewer and fewer of them over time to irritate us. Indeed, I block all trolls the very first time they write anything snarky to or about me and my friends. I am all about respect. "One of the sad things about listservs is that their owners refuse to block trolls, and No, I really don't care why they don't. Trolls should be blocked at every turn. Period. "I personally would like to resurrect the popularity of listservs, if for no other reason than to prevent FB from accessing their members and what they say for FB's own gain. It wouldn't be so bad if FB redistributed some of that wealth, but no..." <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> Buford Pruitt, Jr 2418 Cherrywood Ln Pisgah Forest, NC 28768 Land Line 828-862-6431 Mobile 352-284-7975 On Sat, Apr 28, 2018 at 11:10 AM, Carl Kunath wrote: > I'll echo these recent comments about Don Arburn. David - I once recommended to the COG that an award be created for cave gear inventors. I would have named it after Costeau (aqualung) or Gibbs (ascenders) or some such. Nothing came of it. Oh well. Yes, it was a French team. Jean-paul Sounier has led 14 expeds to New Britain. I met him at the 2017 Dachstein Exped. He's 66yo and you ought to see his 6-pack. Excellent, accomplished caver!
