Re: [Texascavers] Fwd: Call TODAY to pass HB CS 4146 to protect Texas rivers and streams

2021-05-11 Thread Jill Orr
Thanks for providing the update Bill. To add to the information:
https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home will help you find your representative.
I found mine and unfortunately, my rep for San Antonio, Steve Allison,
voted Nay. I'll be writing him. I hope all Texas Cavers (formations) will
invest the little time it tasks to protect our environment.

[Texascavers] petition to shut down taxpayer funded kitten / cat experimental lab

2020-09-11 Thread Jill Orr
Hi Everyone

This is not caving related but it's important!

The link below is for a Youtube channel where Hanna Shaw, a professional
kitten rescuer posted a short video describing what is going on in labs
performing torturous experiments on kittens and cats. She has a link to the
petition to Congress.

Please help take action by signing the petition and forwarding to helping
get others to sign.!

Re: [Texascavers] misadventure

2019-06-21 Thread Jill Orr
I looked into Megabus as an option for getting to Mallory's wedding. When I
looked, a couple of months before the wedding date, I could have gotten to
Baton Rouge for $2 ! There was one bus change in Houston and the entire
trip would have taken 9 hours overnight. I opted to fly instead, but it
just goes to show that a little planning a few months ahead will eliminate
a lot of stress, expense, and lost time. You can buy your tickets well in
advance while those cheap seats are available, and if you don't use them,
you are only out the few bucks.

If David chooses to use Megabus in the future, some of us might be the
losers - for he could only write that the trip was uneventful and he got a
good night's sleep. That would also make some of us very happy!
Happy travels David.

[Texascavers] washer/dryer/e range

2018-11-21 Thread Jill Orr
Is anyone interested in these used, but really good condition appliances? I
just moved and they came with the house but I have my own W/D and don't
like coil stoves. The washer & dryer are front load Maytags, and the range
is a 30 inch Whirlpool. All are white and electric.
All three for $150. (which is basically covers the cost of delivery for new
range and hauling the existing. Contact me off line if interested and for
photos and questions.

[Texascavers] photo of ezell's cave

2017-06-27 Thread Jill Orr via Texascavers
The TCMA is working on a set of kiosks for Deep and Punkin' preserve and
one kiosk will have a section on major TCMA preserves. For this we need a
high res photo from Ezell's. The photo has to be 300 dpi and qood quality,
and can be of the blind salamander, the aquifer, or an interesting feature.
Please contact me off line if you have a photo and are willing to submit it.

Thanks in advance, Jill

Dear Friends,

The DeepKarst 2016 conference now includes a wide range of optional field
trips to further view, discuss, and debate hypogene karst. The Guadalupe
Mountains of southeast New Mexico and west Texas are considered one of the
type areas of hypogene karst development, and up to nine additional field
trips will now be offered both before and after the conference, which will
be held at NCKRI Headquarters in Carlsbad, New Mexico, USA, on 11-14 April
2016. The conference is co-organized with the Karst Hydrogeology and
Speleogenesis Commission of the International Union of Speleology.

But to serve you best, we need your help. With so many possible trip
options, we need to know which are of greatest interest. Please visit
http://deepkarst.org/optional-trips.html for information about the options
and then complete the PDF form at
http://deepkarst.org/assets/extratripsform.pdf by the end of January so we
can determine which trips and how many to offer.

While on the website, don't forget to register for the conference!
Registration prices go up in about a month. We have an excellent array of
international papers that you'll enjoy. We'll post the session schedule with
the list of papers as soon they are wrapped up.

Let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to share this message
with anyone who may be interested.

George

I just looked through the digital version of the latest Texas Caver. My lead
list for Honey Creek Cave fills the last few pages. However, I noticed a
mistake. A note was added to contact me with any new information but it
lists my old e-mail address (which hasn't worked since I moved from San
Antonio nearly 8 years ago) and a 505 area code for my home phone in
Carlsbad (which a few years ago changed to 575 for the southern half of New
Mexico).

In short, if you have any updates for the lead list or any questions about
the specific leads, let me know. My correct e-mail address and other contact
information are below. Notice that my mobile number is still a San Antonio
area code.

You are absolutely right

I don’t know what to do. Before I left I asked and asked for articles and
photos. I've asked people to help solicit articles. I put so much time into
layout and editing, getting it printed and mailed I feel like its pushing the
limit to have to spend the time asking and following up and asking again. But
I'm preaching to the choir.

[Texascavers] Texas Caver Announcement

2014-06-20 Thread Jill Orr
Hi Texas Cavers,

Aside from the other great people who've volunteered to help solicit
articles, Mallory Mayeaux has agreed to be Associate Editor for the Texas
Caver Magazine, and make direct contact for articles on all the great trips
going on. Since for the next few months I can only make general requests,
which have been quite ineffective, I really need the support.

The upcoming issue, which is completed and currently being edited, is
greatly reduced for lack of articles and photos. I really hope to catch up
and have a full sized issue in a reasonable time frame. Many thanks to all
new and regular contributors and apologies to subscribers for the late and
shrunken issue.

The December Texas Caver was sheepishly mailed this week. The printer even
called to ask if there was a typo
on the date. :- /. Good printer, that. Very embarrassed. Have heard of
other persons being such a procrastinator but I was never one like this
before. Sorry y'all. Butch has been sent copy for website - watch for your
electronic versions.

Please send articles ASAP for next issue so I can catch up...! Thanks for
your understanding and patience.

OK David and you other Texicans. This is also the entrance to a Texas
cave. The scenery in the background will give you the clue that it is not
very close to Houston. The rancher is the guy with his back toward you on
the right - wearing the c'boy hat.

It will be interesting to see who comes up with the correct answer, and
THEN find out if they actually have been there -.

[Texascavers] September Texas Caver

2013-11-15 Thread Jill Orr
Texas Cavers:

The Caver is extremely late this issue due to many circumstances that came
up, both personal and printer related. The printer shorted us about 25
issues that should have been labeled, and getting the replacements took a
couple of weeks. An attempt to pass the labeled issues at the TCR didn't
happen, and I'm working on sorting the labeling mess I'm left with. Thank
you for your understanding and patience.

In the mean time - the December issue needs articles.

[Texascavers] texas caver magazine

2013-02-19 Thread Jill Orr
So sorry TSA members for such a long delay in getting the print publication
out.

Many things kept me behind, but ..
The good news is the new issue came from the printer yesterday

The bad news is that they did not label them

The good news is that they will reprint them with labels for free

More good news is that I'll be in Austin and can deliver to many TSA members
at the TCC

Even more good news is that we can save some postage

The Best good news is we get to keep the 100 that they printed without
labels

Thanks for your patience.

By the way, I'm looking for photos for next issues cover and of course
articles.

Subject: [Texascavers] printing photos

File size is not a very good indication of whether the resolution of a photo
file is good enough. You can easily change the file size by a factor of 10
by JPEG compression that makes no visible difference in the photograph and
does not change the resolution.

The printer that I think the Texas Caver uses (I steered it to them) prints
halftones at 150 DPI. The rule of thumb used to be that you wanted to start
with 150% of that resolution, which would be 225 DPI.
The printer asks for 300 for grayscale or color illustrations and 600 for
black-and-white line copy such as cave maps. What I usually ask people to
send for the Association for Mexican Cave Studies is photos that are at
least 1200 pixels high or wide. The largest I usually print photos is 4.44
inches, so that is good enough, even when I do some cropping. If I want to
use a photo on the cover, I go back and ask for more.

Actually, it takes a powerful magnifier to see a difference in the printed
results, even if a map starts out at 300 DPI or a photo at 150. Where you
really get in trouble is something that is just screen resolution. Beware of
photo software with one-click methods for e- mailing or posting photos.
Those typically automatically reduce the resolution (and file size) on the
assumption that the result is to be viewed on-screen. E-mail the actual
original photo file as an attachment. Even with the highest quality JPEG
compression, it won't be bigger than 10 MB. (Do _not_ JPEG line copy such as
cave maps. ZIP or LZW compression is OK. As there is no such thing as a
black-and- white JPEG, this question doesn't arise, unless you've used grays
or colors in the map.)

Jill, the printer's prepress people will fuss if illustrations are less than
their recommended resolution or color illustrations are not CMYK. Save
yourself an exchange of e-mails and include in the instructions with the PDF
files something like I know some illustrations are less than the
recommended resolution. They are the best available. Don't worry about it.
If I have forgotten to make a color photo CMYK, don't worry about that,
either. There is, of course, no point in your upsampling (or downsampling)
things just to keep them happy. You probably already know that you have to
be careful making PDFs. Acrobat by default JPEG-compresses or downsamples
things, unless you tell it not to.

For all who have no way of telling photo resolution, here is a good way to
determine if your photos are going to be big enough to print:

Look at the file size:

If the KB is under 500 KB chances are it's too small for print.

40 and 50 KB are only good for viewing online and not printable.

500 KB and over should be ok. Around 1 MB is optimal.

Sorry I didn't tell you all this way first time around.

[Texascavers] photo quality

2012-07-22 Thread Jill Orr
Please keep the following in mind when taking photos that could be submitted
for print in The Texas Caver.

One of the hardest things to deal with as a graphic designer is getting
quality images from non professional photographers. Most people just have no
reason to know the difference in digital image resolution quality.

Here is a quick lesson:

Resolution is the measurement of how many pixels fit into one inch (dpi).

  72 dpi = BAD

300 dpi = GOOD

The higher resolution, the sharper the image will be. Standard
recommendation for an image for print is 300 dpi for crisp, clear results.
Lower resolution images appear fuzzy, jagged, and blurry.

Most people have their phones and cameras set on low quality to allow for
higher storage volume, and of course sending via pixt or email. You can't
tell the difference until you try to print.

To increase resolution for quality prints:

Adjust your camera to the highest quality setting. Taking the photo on the
highest setting will maximize both the quality of the image, as well as the
range of sizes at which you will be able to use it in printing projects. If
possible, save your image as a TIF.

Thanks for listening ! J

[Texascavers] CM cave trip reminder

2012-05-28 Thread Jill Orr
This is the biggest caver outing between TSA and TCR! All grottos are
invited.

Hopefully my grotto contacts have spread the word about the C My Shovel trip
weekend of June 9. I'll post complete details tonight. Please coordinate
your rsvp with your grotto trip contact, who will contact me. Primitive
camping is available Friday and Saturday nights.

CM is located near Honey Creek Cave and is both water and vertical. (must be
vertically competent - there is no tractor here) You must have your own gear
and wet suit. No fins or boogie boards are needed, only sturdy cave boots.
There is very little swimming and the trip should last about 2.5 hours, not
including in and out. There is ridge walking and I've been told lots of
little caves for those who don't want to go in CM.

If we get around 40 cavers there will be BBQ provided Saturday night in
which we will pass the hat for payment.

Thanks and see you there!

Thank you Allan for the kudos on the newsletter.

I’m going to take exception to Stefan’s comment regarding it being selfish for
individual Grottos to publish their own newsletter since Bexar Grotto appears
to be the only grotto publishing regularly.

It takes a lot of work to get anyone to submit an article. I have several
supporters in BG who regularly submit articles or photos, and encourage other
members to write. The Texas Caver comes out quarterly, - I work at getting a
monthly newsletter out when the news is fresh; and it is for the people who are

Maybe you are just trying to stir up some controversy Stephan. Ok I’ll bite,

Are you writing articles for the Texas Caver? Then perhaps you may have a
point to call the Bexar Grotto selfish for keeping the Bexar Facts going. No
actually you don’t. You sound a little like a spoiled, jealous kid who can’t

resort to name calling trying to instill guilt. Our newsletter helps keep our
grotto members informed, connected, and interested. I have no intention of
