[Texascavers] Caving Article in the San Saba Star 1963
The August 26, 1963 issue of the San Saba Star had an excellent article titled: "Spelunkers will explore caves in area during holiday weekend". It includes such important warnings as "if you see heads popping out of the ground, you are not losing your mind" and asked landowners to report any caves and "a dirty, but courteous caver will appear at your door" Does anybody happen to have a high quality scan of this issue? It's referred to in 50 Years of Texas Caving and I found a copy on newspapers.com, but the quality isn't great. On the off chance that someone has a higher quality scan, I'd love to get a copy of it before our presentation at Colorado Bend's Heritage Day this weekend. It would be an awesome addition to our presentation! Thanks! [Texascavers] Send me your Colorado Bend Photos!
Cavers! This October 14-15 Colorado Bend State Park will be celebrating their 30th year as a state park. Will and I have been asked to represent the TSA and give a presentation about the history of the TSA project in the park and what we do there. We'd love to include any pictures of you caving in the park (or on the land that would later make up the park) or any anecdotes you want to share for our presentation. We'd also love to add those to our project archives. If you want to help represent our awesome caving community we'd love to have you join us! We know it's the same weekend as TCR (sorry, we don't set TPWD's schedule), but it will be a fun time. Also keep in mind Colorado Bend is only 3 hrs from Paradise Canyon so you could hang out with us all morning and make it to Paradise Canyon in time for the big feed! [Texascavers] Colorado Bend December Trip Report
Project Dates: December 12-13, 2015 Volunteers: Kris Peña, Will Quast, Tyler Forbes, Jorge Carcamo, Jeremiah Schoenert, Brendon Brown, Heather Tuček, Jeffrey Nichols, Liz Herren, Craig Sherrell, Elizabeth Copelin, Stacy Vanderworth Total Hours: 85 hrs work time + 42 hrs drive time = 127 volunteer hours Summary: We had 12 people come out for an unseasonably warm December trip and we hiked in just jeans and t-shirts. The threat of a rainy weekend kept a few people away, but the rain didn’t fall until Saturday night after everyone was in their tents. We divided into 3 teams. Will and Kris’s team headed out into the Upper Gold Mine area to karst walk some previously scoped out areas. A few known caves were visited, a few holes inspected and a potential new cave was found. Heather and Jeff returned to their dig on Meatbag Cave after first helping the park with a cave tour. Tyler took his team for another successful trip across the river into Lampasas County. They used kayaks to cross quickly and spent a long day in numerous caves. All teams returned to camp by evening in time to enjoy dinner and time around the campfire. A Garmin 60CS was damaged on this trip and we will need to use project funds to replace it. Full Report: Names: Will Quast, Kris Peña, Elizabeth Herren, Stacy Vanderworth, Craig Sherrell, Elizabeth Copelin Times: 10 am - 5:30 pm Purpose: To relocate and survey known caves and karst walk Data: Will’s GPS Report: We parked at the Permit Lot across from the Lemons Ridge Trail. Just a couple hundred meters on to the trail, we found some rusted out barrels. Then we investigated a sink that was found at the base of the tree (CS1KF). The team dug a little at the sink while Liz and Kris flew off into the woods, excited to karst investigate the area. The girls were so excited they forgot the GPS so they could not plug in the karst feature they found. Alas it was not humanly passable anyway. Next we trounced through the woods until we came upon Sumps Below (SAB 245), a known but untagged cave. We kinda just poked our head in and headed off to Red Gate Cave (SAB 234 tagged). Craig was the only one brave enough to free climb this cave and the rest of us just agreed our free climbing skills needed work. Next we were off to Grand Cedar (SAB 292 tagged). Here Will and Kris rigged some webbing for the short drop and went in first to dig a little on the end room. Craig wandered off and found an unknown cave but sadly did not save it into the GPS correctly so it is temporarily unknown again. Stacy, Liz and Elizabeth dug on a sink outside. It seems the sink is right above this room as they could hear us through the ceiling. The air inside the end of the cave got bad so Will and Kris emerged. Stacy, Liz and Elizabeth dropped into the first pit. On the way out Liz and Elizabeth found three tri colored bats! We then headed off in the direction of Sheep Den (SAB 242) but Will found a previously unmarked, untagged cave we nicknamed Fern Gully since it's entrance was covered in ferns. We all dropped into this cave. Below the first drop was three more tricolored bats. It opens up into a big room where Craig and Will were able to stand on a platform overlooking a pit. Will rigged it with rope and dropped the pit. It was about 40 feet down but the air was super bad. He came right back up. We left Fern Gully and headed to Flaky Rock (SAB 266 tagged). It had a sloping path with no good foot holds and went only like 20 feet. We moved on after Kris climbed out cursing, and Kris does not curse. No fun to be had there. Yellow Ribbon (SAB 265 tagged) was next. Craig once again was the only one who free climbed all the way down into this cave. The rest tried but didn't go far. Last stop was Sheep Den (SAB242 no tag). It was too late in the day to survey the cave but we all poked around in the cave for a bit. Seven total caves, seven and a half hours hiking and caving. I'd say it was a productive adventure. Future Objectives: Relocate Craig’s missing karst feature, return to Fern Gully when the air is better and survey Names: Heather Tuček, Jeffrey Nichols Time: 12:00pm - 5:00pm Purpose: Continue to Dig on MeatBag Report: We went to MeatBag (no ID) once again to continue working on the promising dig that we have there. We dug quite a bit of loose dirt and rocks out of the entrance hole, and it looks to be a nicely fractured solutional feature, but full of dirt. We can see into the feature 3.6metres, from the bottom of the entrance hole, which is 2.3metres deep from the ground surface. Looks promising! The plan is to visit again when we can and dig straight down to try to find the main pit of the fracture. Name: Tyler Forbes, Jorge Carcamo, Jeremiah Schoenert, Brendon Brown Time: 9 am - 4:30 pm Purpose: Karst walk across the river Data: TSA GPS #2 Report: With a lot of excitement about more to discover across the river, we used this Saturday to explore more of the Lampasas county side of the park. We needed k
[Texascavers] October CBSP Trip Report
Project Dates: October 9-11, 2015 Volunteers: Will Quast, Dale Barnard, Casey Tucker, Elizabeth Copelin, Guin McDaid, Rowan McDaid, Colin Strickland, Matt Zaldivar, Bryce Smith, Jim Kennedy, Kyle Banowsky Total Hours: 79 hrs work time + 63 hrs drive time = 142 volunteer hours Summary: We started the season with a weekend of beautiful weather at Colorado Bend State Park. Three teams headed out in the field. Will, Dale, Casey, and Elizabeth spent the day ridge walking and cleaning up old data. They even managed to survey one karst feature. Colin and Guin wanted to get young Rowan some caving experience so they went to a known karsty area, entered a few caves, and opened up a new entrance to Two Fissure Cave. The third team, made up of Matt, Bryce, Jim, and Kyle, headed out to Lost Petzl and got footage of caving, surveying, and digging for the video Kyle is working on for TPWD. Some cavers had a quick dip in the springs then reconvened at caver camp and enjoyed a relaxing evening of camaraderie and stargazing. Full Report: Names: Will Quast, Dale Barnard, Casey Tucker, Elizabeth Copelin Times: 9:30am - 4:00pm Purpose: To relocate and survey known caves and karst walk Data: Two sheets of field paper and Will’s GPS Report: During karst walk, found a small karst feature that was being occupied by a opossum. The group confirmed GPS coordinates, entered Barrets Cave (SAB388), and saw flagging tape; the cave needs a tag. Confirmed the GPS coordinates of Dead Elm Sink (SAB387), which does not look promising. Confirmed GPS coordinates for Becky’s Dig (KF 12), which is also not promising. Found, surveyed, and sketched a previously unmarked karst feature, now named Evangelist Snake Karst Feature. This karst feature was 2.7 meters in length, with an azimuth of 253 degrees and an inclination of -36 degrees. Confirmed the GPS location of Critter Crevice (SAB389) which was too tight for anyone in the group to enter. Confirmed the GPS coordinates and entered Frog Fissure (SAB238), which requires vertical entry. Found Cory’s Cave (SAB385) and updated its coordinates with a higher degree of accuracy. Future Actions: Tag Barrets Cave (SAB388). Names: Guin McDaid, Rowan McDaid, Colin Strickland Time: 9:30am - 6:30pm Purpose: Get Rowan some caving experience and have fun digging. Report: Headed towards karst feature SAB344 located it and crawled into it. Then headed towards Nostril Cave. GPS unit said we were within one meter of it but we never located it after much searching. Gave up on Nostril and headed to Two Fissure Cave. We did a through trip in Two Fissure Cave. Rowan did his first chimneying ever, and had a good time doing it. There were lots of cave crickets and a large toad at the bottom. We also found a 2 inch long frog on the wall. On the surface in line with the other to entrances were a couple of good looking dig leads. We dug open one of them and now Two Fissure Cave has three entrances. We dug on the other for a while then gave up and headed back towards the vehicle. On the way back we ran into a cave marked with rock cairns and went in. The cave had survey markers inside but there was no GPS point. We got Rowan to do a long belly crawl into a dead end, which was fairly amusing. We found Poop Pendulum cave about 50 feet away as we continued back to the vehicle. Name: Matt Zaldivar, Bryce Smith, Jim Kennedy, Kyle Banowsky Time: 9:30am - 4:00pm Purpose: To relocate and survey known caves and get video of cave surveying for TPWD video Data: Kyle’s video equipment Report: Headed towards Lost Petzel cave, shooting video of various nearby cave entrances and karst features while Jim gave brief descriptions of each location for the video. We entered Lost Petzel through the Last Gasp entrance. Kyle took video of Jim, Bryce, and Matt climbing through Last Gasp entrance into the first room. Observed a bat in the first room. Continued down into the cave and started looking for a connection between two known points. Matt crawled through and found a loop, which after looking at the data found that it does need survey. There was a narrow passage, a few inches high vertical, dirt floor beneath. Jim and Bryce started to do some digging. Found a rhadine beetle. Matt was able to climb around to the other side and realized that it was going to take a long time to dig out all the dirt. We saw another bat in this area. Also, saw a large frog. Continued on deeper into the cave. Staged surveying and mapping for the video. There was lots of juniper brush and mud down in this area, washed down from rains and covering the walls, left behind after the water slowly drained out of the cave. Got shots of stalactites near southeast terminus of cave. Shot video of lighter trick in bad-air pit. The lighter was not working very well though--low on butane. After this, we continued on to a rimstone dam area. Got more shots for the video. Continued out of the cave, the same way we came in. Saw a very small toad near th

If you're planning on coming to Colorado Bend this weekend and haven't told me you want in on any of the group meals, I need to know today to make sure we have enough food. Don't forget we'll be in the conference center! Also, we have a group of college students coming out this weekend. Let me know if you want to take charge of them. It will likely involve leading them into one of the easy caves after they complete a volunteer project. Re: [Texascavers] December Colorado Bend Trip Report
The dates for the previous report are actually December 13-14 (not November)...It was a rather mild DECEMBER in Colorado Bend, so mild I must have thought it was November. :) On Mon, Jan 5, 2015 at 10:22 PM, Kris Pena wrote: > Project Dates: November 13-14, 2014 > > Volunteers: Kris Peña, Will Quast, Tyler Forbes, Jose Elizondo, Jorge > Carcamo, Luke Denman, Heather Tuček, Elizabeth Herren, Jeff Nichols, Keenan > McDonald, Devyn Stewart, Stacy Vanderworth > > Total Hours: 80 hrs work time + 47 hrs drive time = 127 volunteer hours > > Summary: > > A total of 12 volunteers showed up to enjoy an unusually mild November > weekend.
