Re: [Texascavers] Walmart for Ely

2016-07-29 Thread Matt Bowers via Texascavers
Sorry Bill -

The new development in Ely is a truck stop. The county is a bit short of
population for a WalMart.

Camp Wood population 750 supports a DOLLAR GENERAL which when you look close
is a mini Wal Mart.

nice place to live. Wasn't there long enough to assess how much one would
have to resort to Amazon out of necessity, not just convenience. Plenty of

Re: [Texascavers] new member discount at NSS

2016-03-01 Thread Matt Bowers via Texascavers
We didn't want to scare anybody, Bill. There are actually 2 licensed
establishments about 1/2 mile from our campground. At least one has a nice
bar & outdoor patio area.

This is the first event I've ever produced where the local tourism bureau
asked if we wanted them to arrange tours at the brothels.

Hey, we don't judge. :)

But it's a $90 discount over what you'd pay if you weren't an NSS member at
all.

For some reason the convention publicity does not mention the licensed
brothel as a local attraction in Ely :-). -- Mixon

Re: [Texascavers] 2016 NSS convention

2016-02-28 Thread Matt Bowers via Texascavers
Hey Texas -

To answer a couple of Bill's questions...

The college student discount requires that you have a current school-issued
ID when you arrive at registration in Nevada. We wanted to make it as easy
as possible for college cavers on limited finances (We've been there!) Our
youth rates are already heavily discounted for high school kids & younger.

As for pets - as long as they "play well with others", they're more than
welcome in Nevada! We'll expect you to clean up after Fido, but you'd be
doing that at home anyway. The "pet rate" is specifically designed to be far
less than what it would cost to leave your animal at home. We'll even throw
in some free gifts. It's very unlikely we'll be allowed to have animals at
the high school, but the campground is totally cool with the idea. We're
assuming you're smart enough to never leave pets in cars on warm days.

As for the non-member discounts... As I've been told, when a new member
joins the NSS, they are mailed a coupon from the headquarters office. That
coupon must be sent to us for you to receive the $45 discount. So, it's not
really $90 off, it's $45 off. Still though, that's like getting a free first
year of membership. (You really should join anyway! :)

Also, as an added bonus, we're making a limited number of NSS 75th
anniversary pins that will be given free to anyone that registers before
April 22. The pins won't be sold at convention & won't be available after
April 22.

We look forward to welcoming our Texas family to Nevada! The convention
received almost 800 clicks from today's e-mail & it's shaping up to be a
massive party!

The registration form for the 2016 NSS convention is now available on-line.
A publicity brochure that includes the form is at
http://nss2016.caves.org/registration/forms/NSS2016_Registration.pdf
The form itself as a single page is at
http://nss2016.caves.org/registration/forms/NSS2016_Registration_Form.pdf
It can be filled in on computer but must be printed and mailed, apparently,
although there is provision of the form for paying by credit card.

The convention's web site is nss2016.caves.org.

Note that if you are not currently an NSS member and are thinking about
going to the convention, you'd be crazy not to join the NSS immediately. The
standard NSS membership is $45 a year, but there is an option to not receive
the NSS News on paper that costs just $35 (not that I recommend that). The
convention-registration discount for NSS members is $45, and new members of
the NSS get a non-transferable coupon good for a registration discount of
another $45 at their first convention. In other words, if you join the NSS
as a new member, you get $90 off the non-member registration fee. Such a
deal.

There is also a college-student discount "must show ID"--not sure how that
works for a mailed-in form. Unusually for recent conventions, there is a pet
registration fee, which implies that pets are allowed. See the registration
form for all the discounts, add-in options, etc.

Dates of the convention in Ely, Nevada, are July 16-23. (But there is an
optional tour of the Nevada Test Site on July 15.) Registration fees
increase on June 1 and again on July 1. On-site registration is a bit higher
yet.

[Texascavers] NSS 75th Anniversary Convention

2015-08-30 Thread Matt Bowers via Texascavers
Greetings western cavers...

We've launched the basic website for the 75th Anniversary Convention of the
National Speleological Society. This has been a work in progress for some
time and it's nice to turn it loose on the range, so to speak.

http://nss2016.caves.org/

So, for all of you that have e-mailed about hotels and airports and
campgrounds, please check out the site. Most of your questions will be
answered there.

Of course, content on the site will expand over the next several months. If
you need information that is not there, please let me know & we'll see what
we can do.

Regarding registration - it's still a ways off yet. Our budget needs some
tweaking to make this as cheap as possible. The convention team will send
out another e-mail once we can process registrations online. In the
meantime, there's a lot of fun stuff on the website now - we hope you enjoy
it!

See you in Nevada next July 16-23!

Matt

PS - We really need some motivated volunteers! Check out our recruitment
page if you can help: http://nss2016.caves.org/volunteers/index.php

PPS - Please share this with your grotto lists!
