[SWR] WNS
I might be behind the times on this but this was brought to my attention today. Looks like the efforts put forth by the BLM that most cavers disagreed with were still not enough for the Center for Biological Diversity. Their website also specifically sites BLM's unwillingness to institute a blanket closure. http://www.caves.org/WNS/CBD%20Bat_APA_Petition_NOI_5-25-11.pdf Aaron Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® ___ SWR mailing list s...@caver.net http://caver.net/mailman/listinfo/swr_caver.net

[SWR] Memorial Day Regional
Just an update on the regional. It hasn't rained and all fire restrictions are still in place. No campfires. Fuel stoves are OK. Please plan accordingly. Also, it has been hot here. Already in the upper 90s. In the interest of not sitting in the heat all morning, please send me any items you would like to have on the meeting agenda. I would like to have a nice streamlined meeting so that we can move on to the fun stuff. And YES we are going to dig in Manhole! See you all on the pad! Re: [SWR] Fw: Carlsbad Caverns National Park Announces Cave Closures
The main cave won't be a problem. Following in the footsteps of Kartchner Caverns, the NPS has installed "misters" throughout the cave. Instead of water, these will be spraying 409. Re: [SWR] BLM issues proposal for managing Fort Stanton cave system
Ken, admittedly I have just quickly scanned the documents on the BLM site. Did I miss something that discussed not working with the FSCSP? The title of this post is somewhat misleading as I feel it should have read "BLM proposes plan for managing FSC - SRP NCA". The actual management of the cave itself is just one part of the plan. It looks like it addresses all activities related to the NCA. The stuff I read about the management of the cave itself seems to me to be the same stuff that is already in place and has been for years. This process takes it out of its "temporary" form (EA for exploration) and gets it into a more permanent form (RMPA). But none the less I would greatly encourage members to submit comments!! It is vitally important. With this sort of decision (RMPA) complaining about it after the fact won't get you too far. Also, make sure you pay close attention to things listed that don't fall under the cave management sections. There very well could be items in those sections that could be important to comment on (campground issues, etc). Once again, I have just briefly scanned what is on the blm site in my half away daze. [SWR] Lincoln national forest cave tech position
Howdy, I was informed today by Brad Bolton of the Lincoln National Forest that they will fly the Guadalupe Ranger District cave technician position for ten days starting tommorow (friday). Look for it on USAjobs.gov. It is open to both the public and current federal employees and is a permanent position. You need not be a biologist in order to apply. So, let's get some good applicants in there from the wide range of experience within the SWR! Re: [SWR] LNF Issues
Cottonwood Cave is home to a summer roost in the entrance passage, a hibernating roost of state sensitive bats in the second parallel that over winters in the cantina room, and a migrating roost that graces the epsomite room for about a week or two in the fall. Hidden Cave (a nice cold trap in the winter) harbors a handful of hibernating Townsend's. Sentinel Cave contains a maternity roost that occurs in the ceiling in the Birthday passage and sometimes on the wall at the bottom of the large pit. As for the caves Ken had questioned, other than one or two individuals here or there, I have never witnessed what I would call a dedicated roost in any of those caves. The roosts I mentioned above have been witnessed on a regular basis and exit and roost counts have been done for years in both Sentinel and Cottonwood.
