Re: [SWR] Tom Meador Award
Tom's collection of cave history was offered to CaCa. They were strapped for space in their library (read: broom closet) and took only what pertained to CCNP and possibly GuMo. I have no idea where the remainder of his collection went. Possibly his widow would know. Re: [SWR] Tom Meador Award
Cavers, If you want to know more about Tom's contributions, yes, read the SWR 50th Anniv. book. Tom is mentioned in several early stories as well as the memorium section. I think there was a website given for where all of Tom's research was donated. I don't have the book handy, but if someone wants to pursue this award suggestion for the upcoming regional, check out the 50th book first. I don't recall that Tom's contributions were in the area of inspiring lots of new cavers in NM. His work was mainly with speleo history. Re: [SWR] Tom Meador Award
George, While I don't think that is the first thing one would think about regarding Tom, I recall him being open and agreeable with all cavers. I got to know Tom as a fairly new caver and went caving with him when I was a relative novice. Kathy's first trip up 3 mile hill was in Tom's Bronco. While I didn't know Tom as well as a lot of others, he seemed to be a friend to all. Re: [SWR] Tom Meador Award
Pete, all, Attached is a photo of Tom taken by Andy Komensky. Perhaps someone has a better photo. I wonder if a certificate could be produced that features a photo of Tom. (Assuming that the award was named in Tom's honor.) Re: [SWR] Tom Meador Award
I never had the pleasure of meeting Tom but have heard many great things about him. One thing I haven't heard is about him focusing on mentoring new cavers. If SWR will be developing an award for new cavers, then it should be named for someone whose focus was new cavers, as in the case of Chuck Stuehm in Texas. Maybe Tom fits that perfectly. I don't know one way or the other. If not, I suggest naming the award for someone who better fits the award and creating another award named for Tom that would honor him more by being more appropriate to his strengths, interests, and accomplishments.
