Such a great historical account of the camp! Did anyone catch the garbage
pit-sinkhole part? Might want to look for it. It nearly sucked down a kid
back in the day!

"Several years before this campsite was used for camping, a large deep hole
on the site was used as a garbage dump.  It had not been filled in, and
over the years, grass and weeds had grown over the top.  A thin layer of
dirt had covered this over and made it appear to be solid ground.

“When the water came into camp, this was all that was needed to soften the
top of the hole.   When Jim came off the cot, he just went  through the
opening."

I worked at Camp Sol Mayer for 5 years at BSA summer camp. It’s a beautiful 
place, with San Saba River access. I think everyone will enjoy it immensely.

Menard is one of the great Metropolis areas. Lots of caves or sinks and the
Jim Bowie silver mine still needs to be found. Also there are as I recall
from past experience zillions of ticks. The reconstructed San Saba fort is
pretty nifty.
