Does anyone have a refrigerator they can bring to Honeycreek for the two tank
haul weekends.

It needs to be least the 3' high dorm fridge or a larger one. Space is not a
major issue, but it will sit outside for the two weekends.

There is a Honeycreek trip scheduled for March 23-24. Andy G will be
continuing his Salamander studies at the spring area, and David O plans to do a
dive at the Downstream sump which we hope will be more accessible due to the
lower water flows. I’ll also be looking for a few teams to survey several of
the smaller caves scattered across the property. If you can help on the survey
project please let me know.

Camping will be available Friday and Saturday nights. Honeycreek cave can be
available for through trips or other caving trips as long as they don’t
interfere with Andy or David’s projects.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend so I have some idea of what to expect.

[Texascavers] Honeycreek trip Oct 6-7

2012-08-23 Thread Kurt L. Menking
Sorry to compete against Marvin's Government Canyon trip, but I Yesterday I
received the OK from the Honeycreek property owner to have a trip October 6-7.
There are several objectives including surveying a few of the other caves on
the property. Two are fairly small, and the other is a series of fairly tight
pits, with a lead that was blasted in the 80's but no one has been back to
check it out.

Andy Glusencamp is also heading up a study of the Biology on the property.
He's putting together teams to do collections in several caves on the property.
Contact Andy if you want to help out with that project.

Honeycreek cave will also be open to those wishing to do survey trips, through
trips, or other recreational trips. Trips to the spring entrance will be
restricted until Andy finishes his work in that area.

Camping will be available Friday and Saturday nights.

This weekend we managed to squeeze in a great trip despite the forecast
for rain. Turns out the doom and gloom forecast for Wed-Friday last
week never materialized. So I didn't have to cancel the trip.

At least 62 people came out. Ellie Watson, Jill Orr, and Andy Edward
surveyed a lead in the M survey. A few folks did grand finally trips,
nearly 50 folks did through trips. Andy G looked for biology at the
spring and a film crew did some work at the spring as well.

The weather was cold, but when we weren't in the cave we were warm by
the fire. The water levels or flows were higher than they have been for
several years but, but all in all I'd say they were back to normal.
Sunday morning as most folks were packing up to leave we had a fair
amount of sleet, but it didn't cause any road problems.

As far as I could tell a good time was had by all.

Andy,

I’ve noticed before most areas where the floor is white with cave ice there is
an active dripping stalactite above (or several). The formations that are very
active often have a mound of cave ice below them. I also seem big piles of
cave ice below waterfalls. I’ve noticed, at least in Honeycreek, cave ice
forms much quicker in winter months.

We had a very enjoyable time touristing in the entrance area and beyond
Whistler's Mother (sucking major air). We saw five Honey Creek salamanders,
despite poor visibility and we had fun coming up with passable explanations for
the deposit of white calcite (?) sand seen in various places in the cave (the
remains of calcite rafts dashed to dust by a sudden rise in stream flow?)
Thanks for all of your effort to make these trips possible.

This weekend we managed to squeeze in a great trip despite the forecast for
rain. Turns out the doom and gloom forecast for Wed-Friday last week never
materialized. So I didn't have to cancel the trip.

At least 62 people came out. Ellie Watson, Jill Orr, and Andy Edward surveyed
a lead in the M survey. A few folks did grand finally trips, nearly 50 folks
did through trips. Andy G looked for biology at the spring and a film crew did
some work at the spring as well.

The weather was cold, but when we weren't in the cave we were warm by the fire.
The water levels or flows were higher than they have been for several years
but, but all in all I'd say they were back to normal. Sunday morning as most
folks were packing up to leave we had a fair amount of sleet, but it didn't
cause any road problems.

As far as I could tell a good time was had by all.

My hats off to Ellie for getting the word out and motivating cavers from
all over the state to come out to Honeycreek cave this weekend. Don
Brusard and Kitty, and others helped run the tractor to get everyone in
and out safely. It was largely a cat hearding exercise Saturday
morning, but once everyone was in the cave everything seemed to go
smoothly.

We had 83 people go caving in Honeycreek Saturday. 83 people signed the
log sheet, and 82 people signed out. The one who didn't sign out was
hunted down by cell phone and tongue lashed appropriately. We also had
at least 3-6 surface people out during the day, so we had very close to
90 folks on the property.

I don't know the exact numbers but about 60 folks did through trips.
Half went in at the spring, and half went in at the shaft. The groups
were staggered and while there were a few bottle necks here and there
they were not a big deal. One group did the through trip in 2 hours and
45 minutes. And one of those guys had only one flipper (he was the one
setting the blistering pace).

Another large group did the trip up the QA to the pretty walking
section.

And Ed, Mallory, Ellie, and others did the push to the end of the Mile
Crawl passage.

All in all a great weekend. I'm not sure we had this many people in the
cave at TCR.

I know lots of photos were taken, so some of you need to send Mark your
pics with a trip report. It was an epic weekend.

We had 83 people go caving in Honeycreek Saturday. 83 people signed the log
sheet, and 82 people signed out. The one who didn’t sign out was hunted down
by cell phone and tongue lashed appropriately. We also had at least 3-6
surface people out during the day, so we had very close to 90 folks on the
property.

I don’t know the exact numbers but about 60 folks did through trips. Half went
in at the spring, and half went in at the shaft. The groups were staggered and
while there were a few bottle necks here and there they were not a big deal.
One group did the through trip in 2 hours and 45 minutes. And one of those
guys had only one flipper (he was the one setting the blistering pace).

Another large group did the trip up the QA to the pretty walking section.

And Ed, Mallory, Ellie, and others did the push to the end of the Mile Crawl
passage.

All in all a great weekend. I‘m not sure we had this many people in the cave

I know lots of photos were taken, so some of you need to send Mark your pics

My hats off to Ellie for getting the word out and motivating cavers from all

[Texascavers] Honeycreek trip canceled

2010-09-09 Thread Kurt L. Menking
With much regret I am canceling the Honeycreek trip scheduled for Sept
18-19th. It's a damn shame since over 40 cavers from around the state
said they were coming.

Over the past few days Hermine has dumped 6-8 inches over the entire
Honeycreek water shed, and some areas were even more. The Cibolo creek
in Boerne which normally runs 10-12 cubic ft/sec peaked yesterday at
about 3000 cfs, and it's still at about 800 cfs. That area of the
Cibolo and the sinks in the fair oaks area are major contributors to the
HC flows in the back of the cave. These flood pulses generally take 3-5
days to peak in the cave after a rain like this, and 3-4 weeks or longer
for water levels to get back to normal.

There is also a USGS stream and rain gauge downstream of the cave on
Honeycreek that shows a 2' rise in the creek, and over 6 inches of rain
fall in the past 2 days.

Deer hunting season for Comal county begins Oct 2 for bow and arrow and
extends until mid January, so we'll have to stay off of the ranch during
that time. We'll shoot for a march-april time frame for another
attempt at this trip.

[Texascavers] Honeycreek trip Sept 18th

2010-08-31 Thread Kurt L. Menking
A few cavers have asked me to set up another Honeycreek trip for this
fall, and the owner just got back to me with the approval. The trip is
planned for Sept 17-19 weekend. Camping is available Friday and
Saturday nights at the shaft entrance.

There is NO TANK HAUL scheduled so come out and have a good time. Those
that have only seen that part of the cave should come out and see the
good stuff.

Through trips will be available as well as all other parts of the cave.
Survey trips are encouraged if you want to pick up where you left off in
another lifetime.

Please let me know if you're coming so I'll know what to expect.

I had in my notes that there would be a Honey Creek through trip in the
fall. Is this what is cancelled?
I haven't been there yet and would like to do a through trip one day.

I don't know how far the Oct 10-11 Honeycreek trip announcement
traveled, but it has been canceled.

We all forgot it was archery season beginning this weekend, and the
hunters will be on the HC property. I did get the OK from the owner in
mid Sept, but she forgot as well.

Just remember, you could always use those candles for your third source of

Re: [Texascavers] Honeycreek Cave air and related topics

2009-06-09 Thread Mallory Mayeux
I think this is a great discussion to be having for a different situation,
and it's definitely been proven that man-made entrances in caves change
airflow, dynamics, etc. and is not the best solution to bad-air problems.

However, I really think it's unnecessary to be having this discussion about
Honey Creek this weekend, as those of us who were down there will agree that
the air there REALLY wasn't that bad...a little thin at worst. Calling the
sump a "bad air passage" makes it sound like we did something dangerous or
unsafe, when everyone down there was 100% OK the entire time. It's
discussions like this, taken out of context, that give cavers a bad name and
causes unnecessary worry.

Before you consider something like this, you might want to look into Carlsbad
Caverns findings on their various shafts like the elevator shaft. I know 3"
doesn't sound like much, but it will change the dynamics of the cave. Maybe
this situation simply means 20 plus cavers shouldn't be in this bad-air passage
at the same time.

Yeah, it really pissed me off when the track lighting failed. The

the beer fridge at the sump as well as restock, there are only cans
left and I need bottles.

2009-06-09 Thread Mallory Mayeux
LOL! For those who weren't on the tank haul I feel like I need to explain
myself:

On the January tank haul, I was told to bring a candle to keep warm, along
w/ a trash bag. The only candle I happened to have lying around the house
was a Bath & Body works "Moonlight Path" candle, which I brought and was the
subject of many jokes and much laughter. Truthfully, it seemed other cavers
loved it or hated it.

I was going to get regular candles this go-round, but Bill loved the scented
candle concept so much I packed a nalgene full of various scented candles to
amuse him, and was going to offer him a choice of scents and light ONE
candle in the passage. However, we ended up waiting almost 9 hours, so we
ended up burning all six! In addition to "sweet pea" and "Butterfly garden"
we also had "Fresh Bamboo", "Warm Vanilla Sugar", "Raspberry Citrus," and
another one I can't recall...seemed most cavers would rather put up w/ a
supersweet stench than get too cold

If/When we ever do a tank haul again, I'll have to bring plain candles for
variety. :)

On the other hand...if I ever "pull a Puppy" and pass up the shaft, Diana &
co. can track me & my scented candles down fairly easily

2009-06-09 Thread Diana Tomchick
Ha ha ha, the best part of this discussion is that while we waited for
9 hours for the divers, we burned just about every scented candle that
Mallory had purchased at a Bath and Body Works blowout sale! Not only
did we have stale air from nasty smelling wet suits and heavily
breathing sherpas, it was intermingled with the enticing aromas of
"Butterfly Garden" and "Sweet Pea." In addition to adding heat to our
trash sacks to keep us warm, the candles also did an OK job of letting
us know that there really wasn't that much CO2 in the passage.

Mallory packed up most of the candle stubs before we left; on the way
out of the cave, every time we'd come to a low spot in the ceiling, I
could smell those frickin' candles again. I suppose that those scents
will always remind me of this particular tank haul trip.

I propose a 3 inch shaft be drilled to confirm the exact location of

[Texascavers] Honeycreek Cave air and related topics

2009-06-08 Thread David
If you have 20 something cavers in a small passage with bad air
breathing heavily
for 9 hours, do expect the oxygen level to improve or get worse ?

I propose future trips take precautionary measures and release some oxygen
into the passage.

It would be little use to install a big fan and flexible conduit to
force some air into the shaft entrance
because the air would distribute evenly throughout the whole cave and
it would also block the entrance
from easy in and out trips.

Also,

A tiny air shaft could be drilled, that could also be used to lower
the diving gear into the room where
the divers suit up at.

Even a 3 inch diameter shaft would be helpful, because you could lower
a telephone cable, or pump
oxygen into the room, lower emergency food and water, etc.

I propose a 3 inch shaft be drilled to confirm the exact location of
the 1st sump, and then use the
diver's survey to mark the surface where the cave is going.

I would also like to propose that the TSA, TCMA, and every Texas caver
unite behind a single goal, and
I believe that goal should be to finish the map of Honeycreek. (
after ICS of course )

I hope I live long enough to see the TCMA acquire the Shaft Entrance
and at least some sort of permanent
access agreement to the Natural Entrance, like an easement.

[Allcavers] Fwd: [Texascavers] Honeycreek trip May 8-10

Subject: [Texascavers] Honeycreek trip May 8-10

For those who haven’t heard there is a Honeycreek work weekend
scheduled for the weekend of May 8-10. We will be camping at the
spring beginning Friday evening.

The focus for the weekend will be taking down the cables, and some
old fencing near the spring entrance. The owner also would like us
to pile up the debris collected along the fences so it can be burned
when the burn ban is lifted. If we are able to burn, we’ll have one
heck of a bon-fire. If there are extra people available I'm sure
there are other areas that need brush cutting. I'd say bring
gloves, chain saws (if you have one), and loppers. Some extra tow
chain would be nice as well since we'll be using multiple tractors
to move the cables, and large tree trunks that are against the cables.

Since this is primarily a work weekend, I'd say all are welcome
(even novices). Most of Saturday will be reserved for the work
projects, but we'll shut down by 4pm or earlier, and those who want
to go in the cave with appropriate team leaders will be turned
loose. There have been several requests for through trips, QA
trips, etc. But don't show up late Saturday afternoon so you miss
all the work, and expect to go caving.

Saturday evening, and Sunday morning will also be available for trip
leader training for ICS team leaders. Bill and I, and possibly
others will be leading several groups Saturday evening and probably
Sunday morning to different areas from the shaft entrance, since all
ICS trips will use only the shaft entrance.

We need about 25-30 cavers to help lead trips to HC during the ICS
convention. ICS trips to HC are scheduled for July 19,22,23,25.
This is your chance to meet new cavers, make new friends, and share
one of Texas’ best and its longest cave with others from all over
the nation and world. Contact Bill Steele or Myself if you want to
help lead ICS trips to Honeycreek.

Kurt
