Actually, I'm about to run into our board meeting where I really earn my
salary and also the right to earn it in the future. Today, I have to
discuss a very popular subject in the region called droughts and trying
to predict when we'll enter critical period and start water
restrictions. We're in a very serious drought down here with most of
the region receiving around 11-13 inches of rain last year. This isn't
bad if you live in the Chihuahuan Desert but less than the 30 inches we
usually average. Anyway, I'll try to avoid misuse of the spoken word in
the board meeting - the board is always more impressed with I speak good
English. I certainly do not talk to them about cluming in any of them
there caves.

Interesting, but you realize that this post will evoke more ribbing and
critique from Ediger. He may even call you a hick, especially with "wherever

Alex,

You do remember we first met in a bar in West Virginia. You and Bob were big
time Alabama cavers looking to pick up some locals (for caving only). Did the
excellent tutelage include the time that Dave G. tried to jump off the cliff at
Short Cave and almost killed himself. I think that was back when some folks,
after taking some things they shouldn't have taken, actually thought they could
fly. Or was it when we went into Cass and you busted a sling on your Mitchell
System and didn't have a safety ascender and ended up standing in one sling 130
feet off the floor with a large waterfall roaring past. I had to climb up the
rope to bring you a sling, hoping you wouldn't drop you ammo can/camera system
on my head and loop a sling under your foot, then you couldn't cross the lip
with my weight on the rope so Bob lowered the tail end of the rope and I
changed onto a 15 foot length of rope with 130 feet of air under me and hung
out watching the waterfall while you passed the lip.

Or was it when we did the February trip to Crookshank Pit, a nice 100 foot open
air pit with a waterfall. When we got back to the bottom of the pit, it was 5
degrees out and the rope had frozen to the wall of the pit. I was at the
bottom trying to keep warm with my wheat lamp in the swirling mist/snow and 5
degree temp. Since I was the last one up the rope, climbing with a Mitchell
System, it was loads of fun. I would climb one cycle and the teeth on the
Jumars got clogged with ice and I would have to take one off the rope and put
it in my mouth to unthaw it, place it back on the rope and set it, climb one
cycle, then do it all over again. I only slid down the rope once on the Jumars
and it was only for 2 feet. I thought I was going to have to use the parrot
technique, climb the rope using my beak and claws but persistence won out.

Or was it the time . . . . we'll this could go on for days.

OK, yes, Carderock was another story, climbing too high with no rope - not
smart, but when you're young and dumb and think you can't be killed by normal
means - geez, I still have nightmares about some of that stuff.

However, I don't actually remember trespassing with you or Bob - just other
crazy stuff - well, those were the days.

Thought you would get some laughs out of that.

the pit, it was 5 degrees out and the rope had frozen to the wall of the
pit. I was at the bottom trying to keep warm with my wheat lamp in the
swirling mist/snow and 5 degree temp. Since I was the last one up the
rope, climbing with a Mitchell System, it was loads of fun. I would
climb one cycle and the teeth on the Jumars got clogged with ice and I
would have to take one off the rope and put it in my mouth to unthaw it,
place it back on the rope and set it, climb one cycle, then do it all
over again. I only slid down the rope once on the Jumars and it was
only for 2 feet. I thought I was going to have to use the parrot
technique, climb the rope using my beak and claws but persistence won
out.

Or was it the time . . . . we'll this could go on for days.

OK, yes, Carderock was another story, climbing too high with no rope -
not smart, but when you're young and dumb and think you can't be killed
by normal means - geez, I still have nightmares about some of that
stuff.

However, I don't actually remember trespassing with you or Bob - just
other crazy stuff - well, those were the days.

Thought you would get some laughs out of that.

2009-01-12 Thread mlmiller
On the KSAT website there are now some comments from the kids who got caught in the cave. Apparently they weren't trapped and have visited the cave before.

"Hey, I'm one of the boys that was involved in this cave incident, and I just wanted to let everyone know that the news report was wrong in that there were three of us, not four, and that I have been to that cave many times before and we were not trapped, we were just exploring. I want to thank the police and firemen though for their good intentions and I want to apologize for trespassing. I thought that the trail was a public trail and that the fence was there to keep people from hurting themselves. Me and my friends, being adventurous, did'nt know that all this would happen over our curiosity. I just wanted to let anyone know that thought we were 'trapped' that we were not and that I will not be going in a cave anytime soon."

Maybe they need an introduction to the Bexar Grotto.

to extricate themselves from a cave that they all barely fit into !!? Either
way, they appear to be candidates for the Darwin Awards.

The mistake they made is getting trapped and rescued.

Community work like cave resto/survey/digging or ridge walking would be good
reformation activities for these kids.
