Saturday, November 19 at 9am will be a workday at TCMA's Rolling Oaks Cave
Preserve.

For those who haven't been to Rolling Oaks Cave Preserve, it's about 5 acres in
west San Antonio off Potranco Road. It has 4 caves on it: Niche Cave, Chimney
Cricket Cave, Obvious Cave, and World Newt Cave. The property is a little
overgrown with lots of underbrush, dead branches, etc., so this workday is
going to focus on surface cleanup.

As a reward for those who help, I'm going to host vertical practice in the
caves! The caves at Rolling Oaks are not large-in fact, they are quite tight.
However, this is an excellent opportunity to practice your vertical technique
in a confined cave space where experienced vertical cavers can see and assist
you. That assistance not always available. For example, O-9 Well (another
TCMA managed cave, but not part of Rolling Oaks) has a 180+ foot entrance drop,
and right about the middle of the drop is a restriction so tight that it's
nearly impossible to do a proper Frog squat or even squeeze your chest through,
particularly if you're wearing a Rope Walker chest roller. And with nearly 100
feet above and below you, you're too far away to communicate clearly with
anyone if you have problems.

I know there a lot of Bexar Grotto members with shiny vertical gear that's only
been used on treadmills in trees. Here is your opportunity to practice safely
in an actual cave with people to assist you before you get into a difficult
solo situation. So come out to Rolling Oaks, help support the TCMA with some
minor property maintenance, and then get your shiny vert gear all muddy. :-)

But to be clear, anyone who wants to do vertical, you have to help with the
cleanup! So get there promptly at 9am.

What to bring:

*         Work gloves

*         Shears, pruners, loppers, etc.

*         Rakes

*         Gas-powered trimmers/Weedeaters

*         Vertical gear!
