I am near Lebanon, Tennessee heading home.

Enjoy Cookeville.

Do NOT leave town without trying the pizza at Casa Grande. It will feed
two hungry cavers.

Apparently the former caver that I was worried about, has been regularly
posting b.s. to Instagram, and after reading all their retarded post, it
seems clear, that they are just going through a "woe as me," phase, along
with OCD, and a personality of needing direct immediate attention from
others, yet while being an expert or highly-opinionated on various topics,
etc. ( probably 60%"of the people on Instagram )

So I am bailing out.

Back to your regular-scheduled program.

One of the many odd things about social media, is that we learn how weird
or bizarre our acquaintances are.

I imagine there are lots more somewhere on the web.

My first memory of Pete was at the 1989, MexSpeleo. He tried to get me
to come over and help with
the hot-tub.I must have known him prior to that from several TCRs and
spring conventions, but that was
the first time we had ever chatted. I was astonished that he had come
all the way south of Ciudad Valles
to build a hot-tub. I was not into hot-tubs, and had plans to go poke
around in a really awesome cave with some
cavers from Missouri. But I think, I might have split a log or thrown
some logs in a pile for 5 minutes. I
am sure it was not enough. It looked like he ended up doing it all and
all by himself.

I think I only really helped him once with a hot-tub, and that it was up in
the upper peninsula of Michigan at
Marquette NSS Convention.

I spent the night in the Strickland house one time, and took a tour of his
brother's orchid greenhouse, and listened
to his other brother talk about space topics, which I found fascinating,
and I remember meeting his kids very briefly
for a group-photo at the NSS Howdy Party in northern Vermont. Thank you.

Pete would always greet me at TCR or at the TSA Convention, and he would
always ask me how I was doing,
or if I still had the SpeleoStationwagon or if I had been down to Mexico or
something to strike up a conversation.

Everytime, I arrived at the campground at an NSS Convention ( about 12
times ?? ), he would greet me, and invite
me into Groad Hollow to sit in with the real cavers. Unfortunately, I
was always too pressed for time.

We can all certainly say that there won't ever be another man or caver like
Pete Strickland.

Thank you all for your moral support. I love you all. Even those that
subtly refer to me a troll.

In reference to the caver that recently retired from his present
speleo-commitments, I too wanted to express my appreciation.

I am a speleo-outsider ( both physically and mentally ). I have never ever
been to the cave preserve and maybe never will. However, I do know from
first hand experience that he is very inspiring. I admire and respect him
on several levels. I recall first hearing of him way back in the day at a
TSA Spring Convention ( 2000 ? ).I am certain that I met him at the
2006 NSS Convention Howdy Party, and that I knew by then that he was a very
dedicated Texas caver.

I recall seeing his managerial capabilities at the I.C.S. in Kerrville (
2009 ), and then again at numerous TCRs. I recall again meeting him a big
pool party in Austin. I am also aware of other things that are outside the
scope of this congratulatory paragraph, like the cool John Deere Jeep that
he has or his cool camper-trailer, or the tiny utility truck, or his lovely
wife, etc., etc.

I have fond memories sitting around the caver-campfire at the TSA Spring
Convention in Bracketville with his son.

I retired from Cavetex. But occasionally I see something that I want to
share with my caving friends. That is coming to an end. I have drifted
away from my interest in caving, and now making new "virtual quasi-friends"
in the nerdy world of Linux.

The link below is an invite to a speleo-presentation on May 1st in
Arizona. This looks interesting. Maybe a grotto could get him to give the
presentation in Texas.

Sorry, but I do not have a simple way to condense the link, nor the
information within the article.

Re: [Texascavers] Thank you for the advice

2017-06-29 Thread Louise Power via Texascavers
David:

One major piece of advice, a little story and a song. First, the piece of
advice: Before you buy your next vehicle, get a real mechanic to look it over
and see if there's anything seriously wrong with it. Obviously you can 't rely
on your own knowledge and observations. The little story: I just turned 76 and
I've never had a new vehicle of any kind. My current vehicle is a '98 Ford
Ranger which, after some minor repairs, continues to run just fine. Unless
you're ready for the value of the vehicle to drop dramatically as soon as you
drive it off the floor, stick to the old reliables. Now, for the little song
which I learned in the 50s or 60s from a local country music station in Texas:

You only get what you pay for

No more or no less,

Though some people expect a lot more than the rest.

If you're one of those,

Then you're headed for a fall.

You only get what you pay for,

That's all!

I had been hoping and hoping to write a happy feel-good story,
as I have never done that before. But the stars did not align
that way. My Sequoia has died, and needs a new motor.

Below is my current thoughts on the matter, but it would be best
now to just hit the delete button as it is too depressing to read.

Numerous cavers offered me sound advice about my situation
with my broke-down Sequoia. I just wanted to say thank you.
Although, I was poking fun at myself for being such a klutz, I was
stressing out about it all.

A series of events unfolded last Wednesday, after my Sequoia first stalled and
died.
My first decision seemed to have a domino-effect to make it worse. Had I
immediately called
GEICO and towed the Sequioa to a shop, I might could have fixed
it for under $ 2,000. But I put 100% of my faith and money in the road-side
mobile
mechanic, as I was way too optimistic that it was a minor problem.

In hindsight, the mobile-mechanics final efforts to help me
may have damaged the engine. He seemed to be trying his best to help me, and
I was grateful to him
at the time, as it seemed like a good fortune of him showing up, and I was out
of options. But
paying him cleaned out all my emergency money, and in the end, I had to call
relatives
for help. Almost all of those relatives, I am on unpleasant terms with.

Had the plan been to change the motor, I should have left the vehicle in
Mansfield,
and focused on borrowing the money. But again, I chose to make the situation
worse. I towed it to an expensive shop in Houston, hoping they had a better
mechanic
with a better option than motor replacement.

Anyways, the Sequoia eventually arrived there, and that mechanic
charged a 3rd diagnostic fee. He offered 2 options:A used motor
with a 3 month warranty, or a new motor with a 3 year warranty. But the
problem now, is that he is probably one of the most expensive shops in town,
when
it comes to hourly labor charges. He did say he could have it back on the
road in a week.He also said the labor on the new motor would be far
greater. Meaning this repair is going to be around a $ 12,000 nightmare.

So my dilemma today, is to borrow money from my mom, and replace the motor,
or send the Sequoia to a scrap yard. The transmission has 192,000 miles on
it.
The brakes need immediate replacement. Several of you said to just junk it.
I am 53 and my mom is 70.I love my mom, but I would not want to borrow money
from her if I were dying.I already owe her a thousand dollars. She does
not
have any money, but she has good credit.

This problem now appears to be my 2nd biggest mistake in life, but that is only
because my memory is so bad.

At this stage, I would have been better off to just abandon the Sequoia when it
first
broke down. I think I already have wasted nearly $ 2,000. I still owe
my
credit union $ 8,700 on the car-loan.

I am going to be in a very deep pickle jar for many years to come.I am just
going to have to
learn how to live in a pickle jar. Right ??

In hindsight now, buying my beloved Sequoia, was a setback. But I enjoyed it
for 14 months.

2017-06-29 Thread Charles Loving via Texascavers
Dead Sequoia no bueno. Me thinks it should be relegated to boat anchor or
albatross t around your neck hat you do not need. If it were me I would
ditch it ASAP and come to grips with your life and stop being so much of a
dufus. Donate the damn thing to KFU or some such.

New cars cost a fortune and it is awful to have to pay off a car that is
dead and in car heaven or hell. I think a smaller vehicle would be a good
idea, maybe a Fiat, Yugo or a Lada. They would be cheap.

I drove a Ford Ranger for 250,000 miles and gave it to my boy child and
360,000 miles later it is still running and he is actually going to sell
it. Amazing. Of course it looks like crap.

My 2003 Ford pickup has 285,000 miles on it and still runs. Fixed the
breaks a few times, tightened the transmission and adjusted the clutch and
I change the oil every 3,000 miles. It is a Manuel transmission which the
Deer Corn mechanic recommends. If it were an automatic it would be long ago
dead he says and he wants to buy the silly thing.

My wife's Mazda SUV is also a manual six speed. It was the only one in San
Antonio, San Mucus, and the area. My Ford was the only one in Texas at the
time and I had to go to Dallas to get it. The 1983 Bronco I got from Rune
Burnet still runs and has a zillion miles on it, it has been to Chiappas
and back several times and to R14 on regular bi-monthly trips.

So, all this is meaningless BS. Buy something cheap and buy something with
a warranty that is longer than a week.
