Re: [Texascavers] The Printed Word
I send in articles every issue. I have lots more, but I assume you all want some diversity in the Texas Caver instead of just articles written by me. Ah, who am I kidding? My articles are incredibly witty and intelligent and thought-provoking, so of course everyone wants the entire Texas Caver dedicated to just me. Why would anyone want to hear about Wade McDaniel's TWO separate tire blowouts on the way to Deep & Punkin? Or the NSS Convention? Or caving at NSS, like when Aaron Polsky's light fell off at the top of Fantastic Pit, illuminating the drop as it spun down, down, down 586 feet. It fell so long that people had whole conversations while it was falling. It finally went out when it hit the bottom, but when retrieved, still worked! Why would anyone want to hear about that? Much better I write more articles about how a semi-round is NOT called a D biner! Those two different things, people! They are NOT interchangeable! If you need the biner/screwlink for your Frog harness, you need a SEMI-ROUND. A D biner is completely different and WILL NOT WORK! Get it right, you idiots! Agh! Re: [Texascavers] The Printed Word
This is something I've chatted about with lots of cavers. Has the TSA been in decline, does it matter, should it be refocused or absorbed by another Texas Caving Organization? You hear a myriad of answers, some say the TSA has been in a death spiral since before they stopped actively caving - just read their book, others say it is a vital source of stability and kinship among Texas cavers and I say it falls somewhere in the middle. I do feel the advent of modern social media has lessened the need for the historic version of the TSA. I have framed copies of the letter and map announcing the discovery of Golondrinas, by the white man, on my wall. Today, there would be an email blast, some facebook pictures and dare I say, a tweet about it. Does all this mean the TSA does not matter? I don't know... When I ask folks what the TSA does I typically hear "The Texas Caver, when there is a strong editor (props to our last several)" and "The Spring Convention". Some used to argue that it also sponsored caving projects, that was pretty easily shot down because there was minimal actual sponsorship and when the TSS started hosting TPWD projects that last tangible benefit there was eliminated. They did help support the new cable at honey creek and some food for the Austin dive projects. So we have the regional organization of the NSS and a magazine right now. Some people say it does a great job hosting TCR too! I just nod and shake my head... The nice thing about the TSA is that it becomes whatever we make it. Yep, that right there, if we want a strong vibrant organization, make it so. If we want it to be a magazine that hosts a conference, well great, that's what it currently does! Do we want it not to exist? Go for it and keep doing what we are doing... The TSA is whatever WE make it. Most of us don't seem real interested in making it much at the moment. There is a small core group that gets my thanks and occasional help.
