[Texascavers] Update on Devetashka Cave

2011-11-15 Thread Lee H. Skinner
The Regional Environmental Inspectorate in the Northern Bulgarian town
of Pleven will fine Bulgarian-based NU Boyana Film Studios for cutting
down the vegetation surrounding the nearby Devetashka cave.

The Devetashka cave is to host parts of the shooting of "The Expendables
2", an action movie which stars Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold
Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris among others

Under the Bulgarian environmental legislation, NU Boyana Film Studios
faces a fine ranging from the mere BGN 500 (approximately EUR 250) to
BGN 5 000. The region was inspected after a signal was filed by the
local Green Balkans NGO.

Besides the tiny fine, the producers of "The Expendables 2" face the
rage of Bulgarian environmentalists who are concerned that the shooting
of the movie may have fatal consequences for the bats inhabiting the cave.

The cave is considered to be one of the most important natural habitats
of bats in Europe.

The bats are currently preparing for their winter sleep and any
disturbance may have fatal consequences, the environmentalists believe.
Some 13 endangered species of bat inhabit the cave.
