[Texascavers] cave locations....

2008-10-07 Thread Mixon Bill
The Mendip Cave Registry, the result of a long-term ongoing effort to
compile a complete catalogue of sites of speleological interest in the
Mendip region, is now available on the web with open access to all.
The website offers online browsing of the entire registry database
(1,804 entries at the time of writing), with optional filtering and
sorting by features such as length and depth. Search facilities allow
for finding sites by name (including alternative names) or, more
interestingly, by entering or selecting an address or location and
looking for sites within a given distance. Descriptions include
details of known hydrology and, for those interested in researching
the history of a site, a link is provided to the recently opened
online Mendip Cave Bibliography database, which now contains well over
27,000 structured references to literary material published from ad
883 to the present day.

The results of searches are shown graphically using interactive Google
Maps that clearly show site locations overlaid on the now crystal-
clear satellite imagery available across the Mendip region. As with
any effort of this kind, information quickly becomes out of date and
errors and omissions are inevitable - so this is where you can help.
Links to submit feedback are provided on each page and the registrars
encourage you to make use of them to report any mistakes or offer
additional information.

I noticed a few days ago that the Brinco entrance is marked on Google Earth.

Interesting. Perhaps not a real good thing. Should caves locations be
posted on the internet? Historically, the answer has been ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I'm pretty sure that the fine people at Google will remove it if asked to.
