CaveTex: Devil's Sinkhole Society film showing this Saturday

2007-03-26 Thread speleosteele
The Devil's Sinkhole Society is having a premier of The Devil's Sink Hole film
this Saturday afternoon in Rocksprings, Texas. It's now out on DVD,
co-produced by the DSS and the NSS, and includes interviews with the son of the
filmmaker and me, done at the edge of the pit. If you've had a thought of
seeing the bat flight at Devil's Sinkhole, this Saturday would be a good time
to go. There are inexpensive hotels and motels, and a campground not very far
south of town. The film begins at 4:00 p.m at the Nutrition Center.

CaveTex: Devil's Sinkhole

2007-03-26 Thread Marvin & Lisa Miller
This is a little late, but kudos to Kurt Menking and Travis Scott for each
having a photograph of Devil's Sinkhole published in last Sunday's (7/3) San
Antonio Express News Travel Section. The article's topic was the sinkhole
and the bat flights and the growing tourism industry in Rocksprings centered
around the cave and associated State Natural Area. Kurt's photo is the
classic in-cave shot looking up the breakdown mountain and out the entrance
with some cavers in the foreground. Travis's photo shows TPWD ranger Mike
Knezek rappelling into the cave. I believe Mike is the SNA manager.

CaveTex: Devil's Sinkhole Society

2007-03-26 Thread speleosteele
Friday I received my copy of the August issue of The Bat Squeaks, the monthly
newsletter of the Devil's Sinkhole Society (see www.devilssinkholetx.com). On
the front page they're announcing the "Grand Showing" of the 1947 movie Devil's
Sink Hole" by Fred Foster. It is now out on DVD and includes interviews with
the son of the filmmaker and me. The DSS own rights to the DVD and is hoping
for a steady revenue stream from selling it. Steve Foster, the son of Fred
Foster, will be at the Grand Showing in Rocksprings, and I will be too. Both
of us will speak. It would be great if there was a good turnout of Texas
cavers too. There will be a tour of Devil's Sinkhole that night.

You might want to consider joining the Devil's Sinkhole Society to support
their good work. A lot of people are seeing the cave entrance and bat flight
through their tours these days, which increases knowledge and helps protect
bats.

There is camping near town.
