I've got a friend who was offered an appointment to West Point while he was in the Army in the early 1960s. The catch was that because he had bad acne, he would have to have his face sanded since West Point don't want no ugly graduates. He declined their "generous" offer.

I guess caving has become more concerned with outward appearances than with "inner beauty".

2011-01-26 Thread Speleosteele
Actually Ted, that's the way cavers look who are going underground these
days. They have fancy duds, are clean shaven, there are more women than in
your day, there are some tatoos, and over all they are lean and muscular.
You've been looking at who shows up at TCR and think they still go in caves.

I notice in the trailers that the intrepid group is all spiffed out in seemingly new REI-like toggery. No old clothes .. and everyone's makeup is perfect. What a crock.. aren't there any Gabby Hayes-like (or Marjorie Main-like) scruffy sorts available for these acting gigs?

When the IMAX Amazing Caves movie came out years ago several of the Bexar
Grotto cavers met with the local IMAX theater and volunteered to do some
rappelling or Tyrolean traverse stunts on the nearby buildings. Several
options were discussed but ultimately the rope work was scratched. They did
however invite all local cavers to watch the movie for free before it was
officially released. They asked several of us to dress up in our gear for
several showings. It was fun and I got to see the movie several times for free.

Fofo's right. Denise and I will surely show this movie poolside this

And at our poolside theater, everything will be in 3D except the movie.

We also know it's for entertainment (to make money), not a documentary
accurately portraying caving techniques. (Did you expect it to be accurate
and/or realistic Tim?)

Caves are in 3D, so the 3D movie must be realistic, right?

Whadda you expect? It's from James Cameron, most recently of Avitar fame. Let's
face it guys, it's not a film for cavers, it's a film for thrill seekers who
