There are 3 or 4 cavers on this forum who have actually gone caving in Caverns
of Sonora - especially if you call "hauling out rocks," as caving.

I once was shown a rare picture of some unusual speleothem off-trail in Sonora.
There were similar, but different pictures in the books about Texas caves and
the Texas Caver.

My very fuzzy memory was the speleothem resembled a large onion ring or a
horseshoe or both, but I may have it confused with the other off-trail photos,
since I haven't seen it in 30 years. The speleothem and passage area both had
a special name.

I had an opportunity once around 1986 to go off-trail in NBC, and blew it off,
thinking I would get another chance someday. Some of you might have been on
that trip. I assume that part of that trip is now what the Wild Tour visits.

I do sincerely apologize for contributing to cavers leaving CaveTex, but I went
out of my way to ask cavers politely to ignore me and just hit the delete
button. I have no nefarious or malicious agenda, just bored out of my mind way
out here beyond the Edge of the Caving Universe.

Dear Friends,

The Weather Channel has a series called Secrets of the Earth. A few months ago,
on behalf of NCKRI, I assisted with a segment they titled Strangest Places and
which will at least partly feature Caverns of Sonora. Yesterday the producers
told me that it is scheduled to air on Thursday, 11 July at 8:30 p.m. EDT. It
will also air several other times, but any of the times may be changed at the
last moment if there are major weather events. Details and times are supposed
to be posted at http://www.weather.com/tv/programs/, although their on-line
schedule didn’t work for me so I’ll just check the on-screen schedule on my TV
that day.

The people making the video seemed like a good crew and asked a lot of great
questions, so I’m hoping this will be quality presentation on this world class
cave.

George, will it be on the same show? I've setup a season pass so I don't
miss it.

Thanks!

Re: [Texascavers] Caverns of Sonora and the Cave Protection Act

2007-04-12 Thread Charles Goldsmith

In an effort to get some more attention to the theft worldwide, I posted a
link to the popular news site http://digg.com

If you have an account there, please digg the following article. Once it
hits enough "diggs", it should be moved to the front page, where it will be
seen by hundreds of thousands if not more.

http://digg.com/environment/Priceless_Texas_cave_formation_damaged_and_stolen

If it hits the front page, it has a better chance of being picked up by
other news agencies.

To Whom it May Concern,
I am working with Isaac Albarado, Representative Hildebran's Chief of

on Tuesday to help pass an amendment that will strengthen the Cave
Protection Act. They have requested that we get letters from anyone in the
Caving World and any concerned individuals to write about why this is
important and how they have a personal interest in this amendment being
passed. If you would not mind and have the time, we would like to have a
letter from you to take to the hearing.
Here is just a short summary of what Brad Wuest wrote in an email to the
Chief of Staff for Representative Hildebran.
"We feel the amendments to the Cavern Protection act will be very
helpful in further protecting Texas caves. Cavern systems and the
formations within are irreplaceable natural wonders and resources, such as
the beautiful Caverns of Sonora in your district. The damage and theft of
the wing of their famous ³Butterfly² formation was a tragedy. We feel the
amendments will help prevent such a senseless act in the future and if one
does occur the greater level of punishment for a first offense will merit
higher priority from law enforcement officials. As stated by Comal Co.
District Attorney Dib Waldrip, the amendments will also harmonize the act
and bring it up to date from its original filing in 1979."
Anything you would like to say or change would be great, we want each
letter to have some sort of personal interest or concern. If you need
anything else or would like me to draft a compete letter for others to
look
at I will do so, feel free to call or email with any questions or
concerns.
These letters will be going to Austin Monday night to be presented
Tuesday.
Thank you very much for your time and help.

Subject: [Texascavers] Caverns of Sonora restoration announcement!

This year's Caverns of Sonora Restoration will be held on Saturday,
November 12th, 2005. Normally I announce the date by mid-September but I've
been out of the country for some time and when I returned the owners were
initially too busy with flood evacuees to figure out which date worked best
for them.

For details on what the project will involve, visit the TSA website:
http://www.cavetexas.org/sonorar.html

The announcement there is from 2002, but the information is basically the
same except for the dates. There are 70 slots to fill and I'll hold 10 for
out-of-state cavers until midnight this Saturday, October 8th. Please
remember to contact me ASAP if you need to cancel.

One last note, for the past few years I've sent notices about the project
through CaveTex. I greatly appreciate Judy and Tom White's dedication and
efforts to make that service available to all cavers. However, if you are
not aware, CaveTex has been retired and efforts are being made to get
everyone to sign up with texascavers.com. Since I don't know how many
people are signed up on that server, I will send this notice through it and
to as many Texas caver e-mail addresses I have readily available (my
advance apologies to those of you who might get this message more than once
as I post it to various and overlapping address lists). Next year I will
only make the announcement though texascavers.com as I did with CaveTex.
Many thanks to Bill Bentley for his work to make this service possible. To
sign up, visit:
http://mail.texascavers.com/mailman/listinfo/texascavers_texascavers.com

Thanks,

George
