[tw] Re: [TW5] Tabbed left slider menu for v_5.0.10

2014-05-08 Thread Matabele
Hi

I have uploaded a revised version: http://wills.tiddlyspot.com/

I have applied fixes for the tag pills in the 'GTD' tab, and the tag pills
in the Tickler folders -- also attended to several styling problems.

This clears most of the outstanding issues -- I think the system is now
usable (until something breaks!) I have tested this only in my environment
-- please advise if there is anything that needs attending to in your
environment.

 Hi

 I have been working on a tabbed left slider menu to integrate with the new
 hamburger for v_5.0.10. For those interested , this may be viewed here:
 http://wills.tiddlyspot.com/

 I have provided sample menus for the tabs incorporating a quick and dirty
 gTD system (but the menus are easily changed or edited.)

 The gTD system is fairly hands on, but is functional -- it has been
 designed to replicate a paper based system to the extent that tasks must be
 manually moved from folder to folder.

 I would appreciate any ideas for improvement -- also help uncovering
 display problems and bugs.

Re: [tw] TiddlyFox disruption in Firefox 29.0

 I think the problem is that the extension redefines internal function
 makeURI.

 If we change in the overlay.js the name makeURI with makeURI_tw (for
 example) the problem goes away (but I tested only in Firefox 30 beta,
 Windows)

palettes. Perhaps, I can work out a way for the user to set this for their

[tw] [TWC] Tiddlytoold Tooltip CoreTweak

2014-05-08 Thread Jan Johannpeter

Hello
I am trying to use a part of Tiddlytools CoreTweaks in a tiddler to
change the tooltip of a tiddlylink.
Unfortunately the PluginManager dectivates it saying there is an
unfinished comment
Unfortunatly i can't find where this shall be so I copied the
tiddlertext into this Mail.

/***
|Name|CoreTweaks|

|Type|plugin|
|Description|a small collection of overrides to TW core functions|
This tiddler contains small changes to TW core functions that correct or
enhance standard features or behaviors.

//{{{
// calculate TW version number - used to determine which tweaks should
be applied

var ver=version.major+version.minor/10+version.revision/100;
//}}}
/***

// // closed: won't fix //(leave as core tweaks)//

/***
!!!637 TiddlyLink tooltip - custom formatting
***/
// // {{groupbox small{
/***
http://trac.tiddlywiki.org/ticket/637 - CLOSED: WON'T FIX
This tweak modifies the tooltip format that appears when you mouseover a
link to a tiddler. It adds an option to control the date format, as
well as displaying the size of the tiddler (in bytes)

Tiddler link tooltip format:
{{stretch{option txtTiddlerLinkTootip}}}
^^where: %0=title, %1=username, %2=modification date, %3=size in bytes,
%4=description slice, %5=first N characters of tiddler content^^

Tiddler link tooltip date format:
{{stretch{option txtTiddlerLinkTooltipDate}}}
Tiddler excerpt limit (chars):
{{stretch{option txtTiddlerLinkTooltipLimit}}}
***/
//{{{
config.messages.tiddlerLinkTooltip='%0 - %1, %2 (%3 bytes) - %4';
config.messages.tiddlerLinkTooltipDate='DDD, MMM DDth  0hh12:0mm AM';
config.messages.tiddlerLinkTooltipLimit=50;

config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTootip=
config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTootip||config.messages.tiddlerLinkTooltip;
config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTooltipDate=
config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTooltipDate||config.messages.tiddlerLinkTooltipDate;
config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTooltipLimit=
config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTooltipLimit||config.messages.tiddlerLinkTooltipLimit;

Tiddler.prototype.getSubtitle = function() {
var modifier = this.modifier;
if(!modifier) modifier = config.messages.subtitleUnknown;
var modified = this.modified;
if(modified) modified =
modified.formatString(config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTooltipDate);

else modified = config.messages.subtitleUnknown;
var descr=store.getTiddlerSlice(this.title,'Description')||'';
var txt=this.text.substr(0,config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTooltipLimit);
if (this.text.lengthconfig.options.txtTiddlerLinkTooltipLimit)
txt+=...;
return
config.options.txtTiddlerLinkTootip.format([this.title,modifier,modified,this.text.length,descr,txt]);

};
//}}}
// // }}// // {{block{
/***

It would be great if this worked.
To make it a perfect Tooltip-Plugin I would love to have another
functionality:
I would like to show the description slice as default, alas not all
tiddlers have one, so it would be great if the plugin could be
configured to show the description if ther is one and if ther isn't show
the Tags instead.

Thanks a lot for help
Jan

[tw] Automatic backup

2014-05-08 Thread Ulrik Stervbo
Hello list,

My entire TiddlyWIki has just been wiped out when Firefox crashed during
saving a tiddly.

I am not amused and I would like to see an automatic backup - either when
the TiddlyWiki is opened or when saved even when this will slow down either
of the operations.

I had searched for tiddlies and had just edited the word I had searched
for, when I saved and Firefox crashed.

The TiddlyWiki is used to document my work, so I need something as stable
at pen and paper.

Cheers,
Ulrik

Re: [tw] [TW5] Tabbed left slider menu for v_5.0.10

2014-05-08 Thread William Jackson
Hi cmari

I had noticed the same thing in Chromium -- this seems to happen when the
first tickler folder of each type is created, when there is an existing
tickler tagged with the name of that folder (@inbox, Mon, Jan, or
!project.) Doesn't seem to occur when another tickler folder is created,
even when an existing tickler carries that tag. Also happens on occasions
when the first tickler is created from a tickler folder. No problems
thereafter. Doesn't appear to have any consequences -- delete the warning
and continue.

I have no idea what causes this warning -- I'll try and locate the problem
or find a work around.

Thanks for the feedback.

FireFox _was_ known to leak memory, when it was running for a long time, or
many tab open (many  10).

 - So you can start FF and have a look at the task manager ctrl - f1 and
have a look at the memory FF uses.
 - If you see a slow down you could have an other look at the task manager.
... if FF now uses 3-10 times more with the same number of open tabs, there
may be a problem.

 - you could try to open a new tab in FF with about:memory in the URL and
have a look, which site uses a lot of memory.
   - Show memory reports - [Measure]
   - Explicit Allocations ... shows the tabs and sites.

So you could find out what actually needs much memory.

Just a guess / hint

2014-05-08 Thread Matabele
Hi

Thanks for the info. I suppose this could be a problem if my effort gets
any traction. It appears that the trademark holders for 'GTD®' consider
that the phrase 'MonkeyGTD' violated their trademark -- I presume they
consider any word or phrase containing gee, tee, and dee (in that order),
is a violation of their trademark. They also consider the phrase 'Getting
Things Done®' a trademark.

I have been developing this project for personal use and to try out some
ideas in TW5, and hadn't got round to the idea that many others would be
interested.

If it gets down to it, I suppose they would have no objection to:
-- GettingTD
-- geeTD
- gThingsD
-- gTeeD

But would object to:
-- gTDone
-- gTdee

I tend to favour:
-- geeTD (gee, that's done), or perhaps
-- gETD (getting everything done) or
-- gSTD (getting something done)
--

It appears they would certainly object to:
-- gTDS (getting things done ... sometime)

I wonder if they would also object to:
-- gNTD (getting nothing done), because I've spent too much time
customising my TW, or
-- fSTD (finding something to do)
:-)

 I wonder if they would also object to:

[tw] An Idea for syncing TiddlyWiki

2014-05-08 Thread Jonnan
This is an idea that's been percolating in my head for awhile - if there's
a theory why it can't be done I haven't thought of it yet, though I can
think of a dozen practical reason it might not work, mostly due to the
computing overhead becoming intolerable inside a browser or edits on the
file causing versioning issues. I can imagine either simultaneous edits
being a problem, or edits being made in isolation and needing to be
correlated after the fact.

That said - I've been using BTsync for various cloud backup/syncing
applications for about eight months now, and I can't help but wonder if
something conceptually similar could be used in TiddlyWiki.

For the uninitiated, BTsync uses the bittorrent protocol to
advertise/transmit the contents of a folder on the internet with a (IIRC)
40Byte Encrpytion key - anyone with a matching key can have a read write or
read-only (in effect) copy of the folder automatically synced. Put one on a
free AWS server and you've got your own dropbox account (I put all my
ebooks there).

It seems like something that *could* work with a single file as opposed to
a folder. It would require implementing the same kind of btsync concept in
Javascript of course, a non-trivial obstacle I'm going to just glide on by
thank you very much.

Given that that can be done, I see two obvious problems, both involving
versioning. One would be that in order guarantee updates at least one other
copy would have to be open at any given moment - which one should be
unimportant, as long as there is a 'chain of provenance' at any given
moment - when a new tiddly wiki is opened it would update. The other would
involve two or more people simultaneously editing a single tiddler; Some
variation of 'diff'' logic would seem suitable.

It would be . . . awfully neat . . . if the first item could somehow be
managed completely within the confines of tiddlywiki, but I concede I'm
seeing no strategy for doing that doesn't involve someone magically making
sure there is at least one copy open somehow. I can however see it being
integrated with BTsync in some way that a copy in a BTsync folder with the
same key is somehow set as a master copy, with BTsync keeping it updated
when not in use. It's not entirely lacking in elegance to be sure.

The second is probably more difficult than it looks, but doesn't seems
terribly hard at first glance.

The result be a bit of html the would be (within certain limitations)
genuinely 'in the cloud' as it were - a website without any pure client
server relationship.

Does this strike people as something that could actually be done, or is it
a neat idea that wouldn't work in practice?

Hi Matabele,

Up till now I did not have time to play around with your GTD.
Now I did play around, and I am very impressed.

Glad that my customization guide(s) could be used by others *and* could
inspire others. You bring customization to a higher level.
Your GTD shows how much you can do with the standard core without using
plugins. And I think that is the real advantage of TW5 compared to
TWclassic.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

[tw] [TW5] How to make Vertical tabs work in TW5

I was a great fan of vertical tabs from Tobias. I am trying to get the same
in TW5. Changes should I make to the code available in the
linkhttp://verticaltabs.tiddlyspot.com/ to
get it working in TW5. Thanks in advance

[tw] Re: Can Wikipedia database imported into TW5?

2014-05-08 Thread Shash
Wikipedia needs an application called Mediawiki which again needs MYSQL at
the backend. TW's goal is way too different from the goal of that of
Mediawiki. Wikepedia does give away all its database for free download
which can be hosted. But importing the same in TW5 would be an herculean
task (probably not possible considering the size and the load time of TW5)
and is also not advisable.

[tw] Re: Can Wikipedia database imported into TW5?

2014-05-08 Thread Keith Ganey
Not very easily.

I see two possible questions here:

(1) You are looking at converting a site running MediaWiki (the wiki
platform of Wikipedia) into one running TiddlyWiki.

I did that recently, the wiki syntax is different and I ended up modifying
and creating all the tiddlers by hand. I had a small MediaWiki (250 pages)
so this was something I could do while watching TV. If you have more pages
than that, it should be possible to write scripts to automate the process.
 But you would almost certainly need to write your own scripts.

(2) You want to create a TiddlyWiki using the entire contents of the
Wikipedia database.

Even if it was possible, this would not be a good idea because TiddlyWiki
loads its entire text every time. Even assuming you only loaded it once,
you'd been keeping the entirety of Wikipedia in your computer's memory.
Surely there is a better use for the memory.

There are better options for reading Wikipedia offline, see this article
for ideas:

Thanks for the answers. Good to know it doesn't worth. Anyway I would not
need all the data from the Wikipedia database just a couple of hundreds.
But at first I thinked hey it's free and why not to have all of these and
also my information in one place.

An exact duplicate tiddler name is not possible, since tiddler title is
also the tiddler identifier and it has to be unique.
eg: tiddler test will overwrite an other tiddler test ...
