Dear TWers, With much of humility, may I contribute to thoughts about these learning concepts started with D. Hillis during the OSCON you refers to... as I'm very concerned with the use of TW in this scope and already achieved some good results. - TW is shown through a web browser. Recently, firefox, - my favourite, shows several drawbacks : the need of an addon, tiddlyfox, because the improved security rules prevents TW to save ; advertising to get rid, if possible, of google's financial control. What will be next ? I found it better to come back to a firefoxportable version 13 having suppressed the updater.ini file to prevent the browser to self update, which did, even with the correct options selected. - TW takes its main strength with its ability to be autonomous. It means to me that it is a perfect tool for personal use, - yet easy to share. But a share probably more oriented with physical contact, even if through a web server is also possible. We should think about that because I'm not sure how the web services will go in the (near) future. Electricity is everywhere in the nature, so that we can always find a way to make a computer work. Autonomy is about simplicity. - TW, may be, is not the simplest system for a newbie ; but far from being the most complicated. And still we can see a fork of TWC with TW5, which is, in my opinion, more like what is done nowadays : sexy style, more distracting, more dictatorial, more complex. - Putting these points altogether, along with some philosophical thoughts (yet drawn through experiments), I found that we should not forget a small student group way of learning concept because the massification has so many drawbacks ; one being that it brings more problems than it eases things. As a matter of fact, the more people are put together, the less they have common points, and, as a conclusion, the more control over the system we have to put on. So, TWC, with a smart organization concept, is already able to handle the bright ideas Mr Hillis refers to if only we can accept a TW becomes Mrs Wilner (the teacher, first human, then virtual, and finally in-between as I propose). It means that a TW can be a mind we can look into, be presented by its human counterpart, and considered, depending on infinite contexts, as a teacher, a student, a friend... To stress again on my idea : the cyberspace already contains quite everything ; what we need from it and how to exploit it can probably be better done by small groups rather than by a learning system reproducing the cyberspace diversity once more. I do not intend to influence anyone ; I know too well how destructive opposite opinions can be : I wish all the best to the bright developpers and conceptors. but when I use a transcluded text:

I get: my{{!!text}} instead of the text field's string which is _car
Is there a way to convert a field to a usable string?

There is a potential issue with this approach. It means that each time the
filter is evaluated it might return different results, even if the tiddler
store hasn't changed. This is contrary to the expectations of the rest of
the system; it means, for example, that content could change unexpectedly
whenever there is a refresh cycle. In many situations this might not
matter, of course.
First of all, I think there are usecases where a new random set at each
refresh is actually desired. Where that is not the case, does the DOM get
entirely replaced or are states preserved upon refresh?
A better approach would be to generate a random number and store it in a
tiddler, and then use that tiddler value to choose a tiddler to display.
That would mean that the entire state of the UI is once more represented by
the tiddler store.
So, in outline, we introduce a tiddler '$:/info/random' that is initialised
with a random number at startup. We'd also add a tm-generate-random
message so that the random value could be regenerated by the user after
startup.
Doesn't there have to be one random number per filter expression requesting
it rather than one global random number for all filters to make use of?
Then we'd add a new filter choose that would be used like this:
[tag[Widgets]choose{$:/info/random}]
That I really don't get. What is important is that each instance of a
*[random[]]* filter or a filter making use of a random number needs to
persist the initial draw until a page reload.
The action of the 'choose' filter would be to modulo the operand by the
number of entries in the current list, and then use the result as an index
to choose a value from the current list.
As Stephan pointed out, modulo will impinge on randomness.

In order to address this, I plan to write Inside TiddlyWiki, a multi-volume series of guidebooks, that will illustrate the concepts, methods, and best practices for using TiddlyWiki to build effective solutions for common, every day, real-world applications. With the recent release of TiddlyWiki 5 out of beta, NOW is the right time to get this long-desired book project launched, and I intend to devote the next few months, starting in January 2015, to uninterrupted, focused, full-time effort writing, revising, and publishing book content. As noted, TW290b3 has been posted online since November 3rd (just before I left on holiday). However, before being officially released from beta, it must be tested in on TiddlySpace with AMBIT (a TiddlySpace-based TW application that is in active production use by over 1000 people!). Once this testing is completed successfully, TW290 will be released. The timetable for that is not yet determined, but it hopefully be sometime in the next few weeks, and almost certainly before the end of December. The TW at tiddlywiki.com has a nice table of contents available in the right hand panel. I would like to add one to my own TW for fast navigation to key tiddlers. Is there an easy way to do this? Hi Mark, For a detailed description see [1]. If you create your TOC in a tiddler called 'Main Menu' and tag it with $:/tags/SideBar, it will show up as a tab 'Main Menu' in the Sidebar.
