I can answer my own question :)

After looking through the code I realized Eric did have this ability
built in, but you have to have the TableSortingPlugin (http://
tw.lewcid.org/#TableSortingPlugin) installed, and then presto!  The
table is sortable by name, or date, or size...

Eric did build this ability into the plugin, but you have to have the
table sorting plugin installed.

Sorry - I forgot - installing the table sort plugin fixes the
repeating directory problem too...
