He's not sure how to spell it so he spelled it both ways.

Sounds like an ideal 'Store', though. Floopy drives, phase noise test set,
golf cart parts, iPhone cases, etc. A virtual flea market of merchandise.

BTW, how 'floopy' does a drive have to be to be designated a 'floopy drive'?

Thus far, they sent the post directly to the list owner, and not
to the list... a fairly honorable method. They suggested that if
you felt the information was something that would be of use to any
of your subscribers, that you should post it on your group.

I wouldn't ban them, but I also wouldn't post their info.

Hi

I really wish they had more than one for sale

I can't imagine anybody, no matter how crazy spending that kind of money on
an item that poorly described. It's not ever clear that they *actually* have
one to sell.

I'd love to have one to play with in the basement, but not for the price of
a new car.

Typical of the perverbial junque dealer.

They think they have a gold mine and eagerly await the first sucker.

Too lazy to put in an accurate description, only time to use another
vendor's description of the generic item.
Probably not the picture of the actual item.

Re: [time-nuts] simple, cheap clock for the local LAN

2010-04-06 Thread Bob Camp
Hi

The question always is - Am I more likely to loose GPS or loose power?

Other that random bird attacks, a GPS with a proper outdoor antenna is
pretty reliable. With a rational indoor antenna and a modern receiver,
dropouts are normally brief, if they occur at all.

Power has an odd habit of going out soon after bar closing time on Saturday
night. If power is out for more than ten or twenty minutes, I have no need
for time on the local LAN - the backups on the switches and other gear drop
out pretty fast.

Just use everybody's favorite GPSDO,  the Thunderbolt.  While it is being
disciplined by GPS,  it is learning how the oscillator tends to age with
time and drift with temperature.  If GPS goes away,  it will still
discipline the oscillator in an "open loop" fashion using its learned
behavior.  The HP GPSDOs do the same thing.

Lady Heather has an option for periodically syncing the system clock to
Tbolt Time.  At its most agressive setting,  it keeps the system clock
within a windows timer tick (20-50 msec).

I'm not denigrating Lady Heather here, indeed it is a wonderful app. It's
just not the most appropriate tool for this job. Feeding NTP with a GPSDO
meets the requirements of providing time to a network, while providing
carryover. Unless LH has a means of distributing time to other hosts that
I've missed. Also, NTP is capable of providing much closer tracking of
time, with less jitter than the approach used by LH.
