Agree. Luckily, I am good at what I do for a living. If this type stuff

Electronics and time are very taxing on my brain.. which is why I play

they were very foreign to me. Now, I am at a point where I want to attack

Hi John,

True. And if you place value on your time then it's best to use existing tools
if possible. The picPET was designed to output plain ascii decimal timestamps
so
the data can be processed with a wide variety of existing tools.

For example, John Miles' free TimeLab program will read from a picPET directly.
You can get phase, frequency, and ADEV of the power line -- live on your
screen,
with no effort at all.

Attached is an example from mains data that Bill just collected with picPET and
that TimeLab plotted.

Maybe not - with your rx on 100 khz you should be able to hear pulses 10 khz
up or down from 100 khz. Wildwood is on now at 1730 z. TX may be quite a
stretch from NJ if Wildwood is not running full power. RNAV claims to be
able to cover usa with one transmitter from central usa and for sure with
two stations. Cool.

You can get some idea of industrial productivity if you can estimate
and remove non-industrial loads, perhaps by comparing weekends to
work weeks. The dip during working hours and the rise at 4-5 AM are
proportional to the total power used, for the same generating
capacity.

The business of making up lost cycles on a daily business is not
easy for utilities. A year or two ago they proposed to let the
system float in order to eliminate failures caused by catching up.
Fortunately for timenuts, the proposal did not become practice.

We measure mains because we can.

We also measure it because millions of wall-clocks are based on mains
frequency; it was the original "GPSDO".

We measure it because its phase plot, frequency histogram, and ADEV plot
are really quite interesting.

We measure it because Seattle, WA (tvb) and New Mexico (Kevin) are both
on the same grid and mutually agree to 10 microseconds (!) over an hour
even though they can both wander by many seconds relative to UTC. It's a
textbook example of common view time transfer. See also:
http://leapsecond.com/pages/mains/
http://leapsecond.com/pages/ac-detect/

You too can join the mains party. Measure it with your own method, or a
fancy TrueTime time/frequency deviation meter (TFDM) or use something
simple like a picPET (http://www.leapsecond.com/pic/picpet.htm) or
Arduino or even a NTP/Linux/serial DCD pin hack.

What about a iPhone App? Orient the device using the built in magnetic

[time-nuts] systron donner 6153 corpse picking

I have a Systron Donner 6153 counter
which has burnt out diodes on the fast

The display board has a big edge connector which
looks like it accesses all of the nixie and power
lines.

I am going to disassemble to make a nixie clock.
I may saw the display board in half in order to trim
it down to only the parts I want.

It doesn't seem like this counter would be of
particular historical or technical interest.
But I'm not likely to know that.

Have not yet decided what to do with the
other two nixies (8), was only planning to
use 6 for the clock.

If you have need for other boards or parts from
this, let me know.

Hi

He took the picture 20 months ago. If he was going to neaten things up, there
was plenty of time to do it.

I doubt he knows what he does or does not have. It may even be part of an

want to pay the shipping on 850 lbs (plus crating), let alone what they are
asking. What are the odds of any of us getting that beast to work in anything
near it’s original configuration? Yes you could rip part out and transplant a
modern modular Cs into it. That makes it a very large box for a very small Cs.

I have paid a lot of money over the years for “stuff”. I’m not in any way
saying that buying “stuff” is a bad idea. If you could make it work, that’s
certainly neat stuff. My only issue here is - what’s this going to do for
somebody?

Re: [time-nuts] national nc2001 atomic clock on eBay

2013-11-17 Thread paul swed
Clearly the CS is pretty neat and would be curious whats inside. Hacked off
cables missing boards etc. $2500 is one heck of a lot of money for what
appears to be scrap metal.
So here is the deal of the day, for $2900 you can buy my HP5065a RB and it
actually works.
For that money I will throw in shipping for free. But please respond before
midnight 11/17.
:-)

LFPhoenix is on at 0314 and been doing very well.
Bill from the graphs in the ppt and the single transmitter site you should
not be able to hear it in TX. I do not believe they are running all that
much power.

Paul.

Re: [time-nuts] What ALL of you Time Nuts really wants for Christmas!

2013-11-17 Thread David J Taylor

I'm considering a spectrum analyser with my pension "lump sum" cash:

 http://www.rigolna.com/products/spectrum-analyzers/dsa800/dsa815/

and perhaps an iPad Air:

 http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad-air/

More frequency than time, sorry!
