Thats great progress. Certainly its worth digging a bit deeper see whats up
on the antenna.
The way they sense the antenna is usually a single transistor sensing the
current and pulling a line high or low.
The micro senses that and reacts. It usually really easy to figure the
scheme out.

Bought some time around 2013 and not used if this is any use to anyone
please contact me direct.   No reasonable offer refused.  I also have a
5370B to go with it but that will have to be picked up in Santa Monica
CA.  $100 with an A parts unit and a few spare boards rescued from the
gold scrap dealers.

2018-05-25 Thread Richard Solomon
The second unit locked up and showed 4 satellites at the time I looked.

Next step is to replace the battery and see if it saves the setup.

In particular, I will be interested in seeing if it stores the date OK.

I found in the first unit what looked like a bad solder joint, but after

fixing that it still shows an "Open" Antenna. Unless I have a major

brain bleep, it will be relegated to Organ Donor status.

But, one out of two ain't bad !!

Well, I think one unit has had it. It says the Antenna is open. If I

connect the coax to the second unit, it says the Antenna is OK.

A look at the board reveals nothing amiss, but I'll put it aside

and look closer later. If nothing else it becomes an Organ Donor.

The second unit is doing a sky survey now. I'll give it a few more

hours to see what develops.

Hi
Regarding the manuals,
I must look in my paper archive. I remember to have two manuals of two types of
those "old test sets". I have even one of the test sets in my "museum".
It will take a while to dig, as I am going to travel for 10 days.

I will come back after that.

Re: [time-nuts] Terminators on empty outputs/connectors

2018-05-25 Thread Graham / KE9H
As usual, the answer is "it depends."

If the output is a single isolated output, then terminating load not
required, but no harm providing.

If the output is a multiple output, from a single driver, through a
resistive or transformer splitter, then the level stability on all ports
and the port to port isolation is dependent on the proper termination of
all ports.
So, if multiple 10 MHz or 1 pps outputs, terminations highly recommended.

Re: [time-nuts] Terminators on empty outputs/connectors

2018-05-25 Thread Dana Whitlow
I recommend putting terminators on unused ports, on general principles.
But I don't
think it would ordinarily be necessary to use big-bucks terms, unless the
distro amp is
really cheaply made.

If you have access to a VNA, it would be interesting to measure the complex
transmission
coefficient from input to one of the output ports while experimenting with
variations of
the number and locations of terminations for the other output ports. If
you find that none
of such manipulations have any visible effect, then you can probably skip
using terms
on unused ports. I should mention that any such measurements should best
be performed
at roughly the intended operating RF power level.

And for extra credit, report your findings to this discussion group.
