[time-nuts] WWVB sync

2013-03-20 Thread Lee Reynolds
I'm hoping it's propagation (I'm up in far northern Maine) but thus
far my Casio wristwatch appears to be going through a particularly
long stretch of non-syncing.

[time-nuts] Tube/valve mounted xtals....

2013-03-07 Thread Lee Reynolds
as young Nigel said, Marconi (for one) made use of these things. I
recall a Marconi HR-22 that had a number of these installed for spot
frequency channel reception.

[time-nuts] RADAR

2010-12-20 Thread Lee Reynolds
Hm, I suspect, Rob, much though it might distress national pride, that RADAR
a la WWII has probably to qualify as an Anglo American product.

The Cousins did, after all, send us those nice klystrons they managed to get
up and running. Would've been a bugger to do it without those.

Mind you, there was quite a bit done by a number of countries in getting the
idea, basic tech and proof of concept going before long before that.

Do like those old HOME CHAIN towers you see spotted around here and there,
though.

Anyone else have anything to add to this?

Lee

I there was me thinking that we invented RADAR..

Re: [time-nuts] Need help with Motorola OnCore software

2010-11-17 Thread Lee Reynolds
Skip,
You may find that the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) that exists
within XP and (not to mention NT, 2K and possibly Vista/7) might be
buggering things up. It denies direct, hands-on manipulation of the hardware
by an application and this is kind of likely to be what's needed by the
OnCore code.

Try this - http://www.direct-io.com/ - and see if it cures what ails ya!

(Hey, Ma! Look at me - I made a post helping someone in Time Nuts!)

[time-nuts] Radio based time stations

And if you are worried about the station being in North America,
there are time stations in virtually every corner of the world.
_

Sad to say, Chuck, those stations are fading fast. Many nations have dropped
out of the business of providing time in that fashion in the last decade or
so. Australia was one of the more notable recent losses. I don't believe
that the African continent has a single station left. Even CHU was being
eyed speculatively by the Canadian powers a while back. Overall, we probably
now have a quarter to a third of the SW time stations compared to those that
that existed 20 years ago.

I suspect that the increasing availability of cheap GPSDO gear to the
average Joe had a lot to do with it.

Re: [time-nuts] DCF77 clock with UTC display 5

2010-06-05 Thread Lee Reynolds

Giuseppe,
I know this might get me hung, drawn and quartered
:-) , but is your need really just for a radio synchronized clock
that shows UTC for use in the shack?

If it is, why not purchase an *analog* DCF77 synchronized clock, set
it to local radio time and then just move the hands on the spindle to
reflect UTC? That's what I did with my WWV clocks that only handle
the US time zones. Worked just fine.

[time-nuts] Comments on Tbolt deal?

2010-06-05 Thread Lee Reynolds

Morning, folks.

After much consideration I've decided that I really do need that
accurate 1PPS and 10MHz source.

Seller "flyingbest" on eBay is offering those Tbolt/PSU/AA packages
for a princely $189.

Any "gotchas" or reasons to not get one of these?

TIA,
  Lee.

[time-nuts] 10Mhz source?

2008-11-17 Thread Lee Reynolds
Hi, people.

I'm in need of an extremely accurate 10MHz signal source (doing some
alignment of receiver TXCOs.)

Would anyone know of a source I could either visit or borrow in NH/VT?

Failing that, what's a reasonable plan for buying one that won't break my
piggy bank? I see that there are a fair number of those Trimble GPS clock
units showing up on eBay but have no idea of their utility...

TIA,
 Lee
