[time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH?

2017-08-30 Thread Mark Sims
Sounds like a serial port driver problem. I started having some issues with
my Prolific adapters in Win XP after installing some EEPROM burner software.
It shows up as garbaged data after typically a day or two of continuos use.

It could also be related to another issue in v5.0 if the Tbolt has bad signals
from the sats and starts reporting sats at az/el 0.0 This tricks Heather into
thinking the receiver is actually a Datum Starloc and Heather enables some code
that tries to work around the NUMEROUS bugs in the Datum firmware. One
symptom of this is the screen starts showing "GPS time ok" in the corner of the
screen if you had the Tbolt set for UTC time and you start seeing corrupted
messages.

Re: [time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH? - NOT TBOLT

2017-08-30 Thread Jerry
Hi Bob, Mark, Tom,

Thank you so much for your advice and support. My TBolt is fine. Using Bob's
suggestion of a serial Y cable and 2 PC's running LH... I had one PC crash with
evolving gibberish on the LH screen while the other PC running LH showed stable
solid performance. So it either is a bad serial cable or more likely the
Prolific adapter. I am now swapping to see which.

Hi

I’d just set up your favorite terminal program (PUTTY or whatever ) on the
second PC and let it do a log file to disk. Then go back and look at the
“problem time”. If all of a sudden the lines are half as long or twice as long
as they should be …. you found the problem. The kind of stuff that a defective
serial port does is rarely subtle ….

Everyone...

We're going to take this issue off-list for a while. Mark (LH author) and
others will work this out with Jerry by email and report back when all is known.

My problem isn’t subtle... I get a Windows 7 popup that LH stopped working.
When I look at the last log entries, there is marked corruption so ROM, OSC,
POW are all major critical errors listed as bad. I have both PC's running now
so will let them run at least until something crashes. Now both running
fine... isn’t that the way bugs work?

Re: [time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH?

2017-08-30 Thread Jerry
Bob,

Great idea... I now have my TBolt connected to 2 different PC's via a serial Y
cable using two different USB-Serial adapters.. both PC's running LH and
logging in background. Now to see if both crash simultaneously.

Hi Bob,

I have a Y 9pin serial splitter somewhere. When you say log do you mean using
LH to write a raw file on both PC's simultaneously? Is serial comm between LH
and PC all receive only - no handshaking that would get messed up with a split
Y serial cable?

Re: [time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH?

2017-08-30 Thread Dan Kemppainen

Hi,

Not to flood the list with traffic, but as this is probably an issue
that many list members run into I'll speak up. FTDI has been very good.
We've run everything from their very first chips through USB 3 hardware,
and never had any problems.

The TTL-232R series of cables are also very handy, USB on one end with
3.3V or 5.0V serial on the other. No dongles...

FYI, Mouser and Digikey are also sources:

https://www.digikey.com/products/en/cable-assemblies/smart-cables/468?k=FTDI

http://www.mouser.com/Wire-Cable/Cable-Assemblies/_/N-bkre6?Keyword=FTDI=True

Yep, Prolific got badly hit by the counterfeiters. So, they
depreciated the use of all the early generation chip-sets (even legit
ones!) and had MS push out updated drivers to enforce that. That's why
it "appears" to be a Windows update problem that stops many older
Prolific based adapters working...

The indication of that, is a non working adapter, that shows a Yellow
triangle with an exclamation mark, when you look in the Device Manager
to see what's recognised.

Sadly... FTDI too have been hit by the bad guys out East. They too,
had MS push out an update a while back that could detect the fakes and
brick them! Well, you can imagine the bad press that created!
Thankfully, it is possible to un-brick the things 100% successfully,
with a little Googling and a Linux tool. (Rewriting the VID/PID data.)

In truth, what seems to have happened is that the counterfeiters are
using a micro-controller programmed to emulate the real things, and are
getting quite good at it. But.. In the case of the FTDI clones, what
should be configurable options (polarity of the serial lines & auxilary
IO line functions etc) are fixed, though the FTDI configuration program
thinks the chip is good, the requested changes don't take effect, no
errors, just no changes.

I have also recently purchased "Genuine FTDI" based adapters, only to
find that one proudly installed itself with a Prolific driver! The
other used the FTDI driver, and both worked, "as standard". But, as I
*Needed* the user configurable options, I returned them to the seller
for a full refund. Seems he got scammed with 1000's of them! I
popped the lid on the one that loaded a Prolific driver, only to find
the chip marked up as FTDI!

It has to be noted, that it appears that even the very old Prolific
chips, and all fakes that I've encountered so far, just seem to be
accepted and work as standard, just fine under Linux, but for how long?

The only way to guarantee a genuine FTDI adapter, is to buy it from
FTDI http://www.ftdichip.com/ They have a webshop, and the prices
are not that bad.

I use what does appear to be a genuine Prolific based device to talk to
my T'Bolt. I used to use that with Windows 7, but I now use Linux Mint
(after the great Win10 fiasco) on the same PC. Not a painless change by
any means, but I've not regretted it.

Regards.

Re: [time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH?

2017-08-30 Thread Bob kb8tq
Hi

If you have a second PC, there’s a real quick shortcut.

Make up a Y cable and log the output of the TBolt on the second
machine. If the TBolt really *is* sending junk, you’ll see it. If not, the
TBolt is ok. Swap the machine that is logging, if the same thing is still
true, it’s not the TBolt and it’s not the serial “stuff”.

You also want to disable the "Microsoft Serial BallPoint" mouse in Windows
Device Manager. If left enabled it causes your mouse pointer to jump all
over the screen every time the TBOLT sends data to the computer; about
once/second. That was "fun" the first time I encountered it. It looks
like your PC has been infected with a virus.

For FTDI serial ports, in addition to ensuring that USB suspend is
disabled in advanced power properties, it's worth disabling Serial Port
Enumeration in the advanced properties for the com port. This will help
prevent FTDI ports with data being gratuitously sent to them from being
assumed to be a mouse or pointing device; Unfortunately this setting
gets reset following most significant Windows updates, so you get used
to clearing the setting every couple of months...

Thanks to all. I am using a high end laptop running Windows 7 Pro, power
settings are all max'ed for performance - no sleep modes. I thought it had a
direct DB-9 serial but it does not so have to use an adapter. I have 3

Jerry,

I agree, if you have a "real" RS-232 port available use it to check if the
TBOLT and LH communicate. If that works, then USB adapter is suspect.
Prolific has been problematic. When I had problems with my Prolific adapters
failing, usually after an "update" - particularly Windows - I switched to FTDI
adapters and have never had a problem since.

Re: [time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH?

2017-08-29 Thread Ken Winterling
Jerry,

I agree, if you have a "real" RS-232 port available use it to check if the
TBOLT and LH communicate. If that works, then USB adapter is suspect.
Prolific has been problematic. When I had problems with my Prolific
adapters failing, usually after an "update" - particularly Windows - I
switched to FTDI adapters and have never had a problem since.

Windows or ???

If Windows, check the OS's power settings, and make sure that it's not
sending peripherals to sleep after a period of "Inactivity" (judged by a
lack of keyboard/mouse activity, NOT the existence of any running
programs, or screen updates.)

Regards.

Re: [time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH?

2017-08-29 Thread Jerry
Hi Bob,

Thanks for the suggestions. I am using a Quadtech SS-100 direct USB-Serial
cable with Prolific drivers as a direct connect from TBolt to PC. Maybe I
should try a direct serial to serial without the USB adapter. If still an
issue then I will reflow the DB9 connector in the TBolt.

[time-nuts] Bad TBolt Crashing LH?

2017-08-29 Thread Jerry
Need some more help figuring out why Lady Heather keeps crashing. I think
it may be a flaky Thunderbolt but I only own one. The PC is an i5 Intel
with 8Gb memory and nothing running in background. The log sequence before
crash is first time stamp erros where the log shows within 1 sec the TBolt
jumps from 6 or 7 Sats to zero. Then after a few more timestamp errors, the
date gets corrupted ending with bad RAM, Bad Osc, etc. If I open LH again
(and do nothing to the TBolt) - everything looks good again for about 10-15
minutes and it all repeats again.

This log began with:

# 14:27:28.000 UTC 29 Aug 2017 - interval 1 seconds

#

# towpps(sec) osc( ppb)
dac(V) temp(C) sats

14:27:28 224866 -8.51365e-008-0.023564
1.196032 42.6603588

[similar as line above.for about 10-15 mins]

After skipping some time stamps it becomes:

# 09:39:47.000 UTC 07 Mar 2019 - interval 1 seconds

Then it goes back to current UTC sometimes with 7 Sats some errors on 0 or 3
Sats:

#! time stamp skipped.  t=229340387000.000  last=181406402001.000
err:47933984999 ms

#

# 09:39:47.000 UTC 07 Mar 2019 - interval 1 seconds

#

# towpps(sec) osc( ppb)
dac(V) temp(C) sats

09:39:47 225605 -8.1407e-008 0.110356
1.196165 42.3623777

#

# 14:39:50.000 UTC 29 Aug 2017 - interval 1 seconds

#

# towpps(sec) osc( ppb)
dac(V) temp(C) sats

14:39:50 225608 -8.08732e-0080.106356
1.196165 83.500

#! time stamp skipped.  t=181406392001.000  last=18140639.000  err:2001
ms

Then it goes into 'new receiver mode' and then 'new discipline mode' while
3-7 Sats are visible. This goes on for another few minutes until finally it
shows a series of further corruptions, with minor alarms ending :

#! year error: 60404

#! time stamp skipped.  t=1601332636481001.000  last=181406509000.000
