Well, by the time your message got there, it said:
  Date: Thu, 8 Oct 2009 12:52:02 +1100

What was it when it left your end?

Re: [time-nuts] Down under Time Nuts & Tsunami's & gear.

2009-10-07 Thread Ray Hudson

Yes I am in the sunny state (QLD) in the far tropical north but my elevation is
about 420m so I'm not in for wet feet any time soon.

Can one put "equipment" up for sale on this mail list? I have some nice tripple
filtered L1 GPS timing antenna and motorola Oncore VP units to go with them.

Thanks Ray VK4TFT

Re: [time-nuts] Down under Time Nuts & Tsunami's

2009-10-07 Thread Nic McLean
Yes Jim I am in Sydney Australia and we are UT+11. To me EDT and AEST mean
the same thing. AEST is most probably more correct to use in a forum such as
this. I work in Television and our media people use EDT.
Regards Nic,
PS the Tsunami warning has been withdrawn.

Hmmm. I'm in a pedantic mood today, but I think this is worth raising.

"09:44 EDT" - what is that?

I'm presuming Nic (emailing from bigpond and presumably in Australia)
means "Eastern Daylight Time" which I assume he means Eastern Standard
Time + 1 hour for daylight savings. I thought it was suppoed to be
AEST for Australian Eastern Summer Time, but I also recall (a long
time ago) it being said that there is no standard name for daylight
savings time zones in Australia. We have EST, CST and WST - but no
offical names for summer. Is this still correct?

I always use 09:44 (UT+11) to remove all ambiguity. I would encourage
all time-nuts to use the same system because it is completely
unambiguous and can be used wordwide.

Re: [time-nuts] Down under Time Nuts & Tsunami's

2009-10-07 Thread Jim Palfreyman
OK I've done some research and may have jumped the gun.

(Note to self - do research before posting)

There seems to be a wide variety of conventions out there on
Australian time zones. The best source I could find was
http://www.australia.gov.au/about-australia/our-country/time which is
probably as official as it gets.

That site states they are AEST (UT+10), ACST (UT+9.5), AWST (UT+8) and
AEDT (UT+11) and ACDT (UT+10.5). (AWDT (UT+9) would be used if Western
Australia had daylight savings).

I still prefer UT+x because it unambiguous and all countries can use.

Regards,

Jim

I hope there aren't any timenuts in North Queensland. There is a Tsunami
warning issued at 09:44 EDT today for the Great Barrier Reef and Bowen to
St. Lawrence.

There are several of us down here on the list. I can think of several in
AU and at least three or four in NZ. If they don't identify themselves
to you, let me know.
