Probably not dead from the rollover issue as I can’t talk to the receiver via the serial port. Not sure of the nomenclature for the GPS receiver but judging from the size of the board, etc., it seems to be a Motorola. I know that it is 6 channel and apparently uses the Motorola data stream. I have a HP Z3801A with a dead GPS receiver. I think that there was something in an old thread that mentioned this. However, Art’s solution is the best. It will breathe new life into what has otherwise been a good GPSDO. It looks like the GPS receiver in my Z3801 may have died. I'm looking for a replacement module and noticed that in the past these have been salvaged from old handheld GPS units. Re: [time-nuts] ESE ES-161
Thanks for all the suggestions. I did get the publicly available manuals but they lack the parts layout. I’ll go through the more formal request process for the more detailed manual. Fortunately, I have a similar unit but a different model and PC board. However, I figured out where the most important DIP switch goes and tested this by jumping the contacts. That lets me set the time offset and 12/24 hour functions. It would be nice to add the date option, but that might take more components. [time-nuts] Used ESE ES-911/GPS/NTP Master Time Clock Power Supply
The Triad VPS12-2000 transformer seems to be the best readily available alternative to the original wall-wart power supply so far for the ESE ES-911/GPS/NTP. The two 6 volt windings can be strapped in parallel to provide 4 amps. It won't fit within the 1U case so some sort of external enclosure is necessary. While the ES-911 will operate on a 6 volt 2 amp wall-wart and the internal 5 volt rail is within spec, the other voltages are low. With the Triad unit, the internal battery now floats at 6.8 volts, a more reasonable value. Under load, the Triad puts out 7.1 volts AC, the same as the no-load output of the 2 amp wall-wart previously used. This information may be of some use to others who obtain an ESE ES-911/GPS/NTP or similar unit that is missing the external AC power supply. [time-nuts] ES-911/GPS/NTP DIP Switch Settings
Thanks for all the useful information posted about this unit. Since my earlier post, it appears that the Jackson Labs replacement receiver is working and I now have a readable display on the E-911. I'm sending an e-mail to ESE with the serial number of my unit requesting the manual. However, could someone who already has documentation please pass along the DIP switch settings? I have found that the right bank seems to determine the offset from UTC. I think that by trial and error, I've found the settings for my time zone and I even discovered the 30 minute offset feature. However, the front panel display differs by 5 minutes from the on-board display on the Jackson Labs receiver. I'm trying to figure out the source of this difference. It appears that the change in the seconds display is in visual sync with the PPS led on the Jackson board. Thanks in advance.
