Forwarded message-Multiple regression textbook

2000-01-11 Thread Bill Southerly

Greetings,

I thought someone on this listserv might be able to refer me to a good
textbook on multiple regression which covers "multiplicative interaction
terms." On two occassions I have had reviewers and the editor recommend
this approach for my research (I have also seen it in sociologically-based
research articles). The method is simple, you multiply the scores on the
two predictor variables you think are interacting and enter that term into
the equation. But I would like some authoritative opinion on the soundness
of the technique, its conceptualization, and interpretation. I can see how
higher scores on the multiplicative term "kinda sorta" points to an
interaction, but its real muddy to me. Does anyone know of a text which
addresses this approach? My old friends Tabachnick and Fidell (1996) are
silent on the matter (which raises my skepticism about its soundness).
Thanks in advance.

TIPS mailing problem-from listowner

2000-01-11 Thread Bill Southerly

Date sent: 11-JAN-2000 21:37:42

TIPSters,

As many of you may already know, we have been having a major problem with the
distribution of TIPS mail since we started the new century. The problem is
related to a change in computer setup not Y2K.

In any case, our computer support person believes the problem has been solved,
I'm not so confident. So a request:

During the last week if you have not been receiving TIPS mail and are now
receiving it, could you drop me a quick note telling me this at:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sorry for the problems we have been having.

Best wishes,

Bill

The New York Times had an interesting article on Beck and his therap, at
least it was interesting to a non-clinical type like me. It is located at

Or just go to the Times Web site and check the Science/Health section.

Re: Capstone Course

2000-01-11 Thread G. Marc Turner

At Southwest Texas State we use our History and Theory course as the
capstone. Although I don't teach it, I did take it when I was an undergrad
here several years ago. The topic of the course seems to be the best suited
for really bringing together the various disciplines within the field.

We have approx. 500 majors (and close to 850 minors), about 19 full time
faculty, and 6 part-timers. We normally offer 2-3 sections of 25-30 in the
fall and spring, and 1 section of about 25 in the summer.

Hope this helps...

RE: Capstone Course

2000-01-11 Thread Dr. Kristina Lewis

History of Psychology is our capstone course. We are a small liberal arts
school (about 1850 students) with around 300 psych majors (and not enough
full time faculty). We (or should I say "I" since I've been doing it all
the last couple of years) offer 3 sections per year with about 25-28
students per section. My preference would be to teach it in seminar
sections of 15, but numbers preclude this.

I see this class as a way to pull things together at the end, to consider
how the seemingly disparate topics covered in classes (e.g., child
development, physio, perception) are related, and how the field evolved to
its current state.

As soon as our IT dept. repairs all the damage it inflicted when "fire
walls" and "proxy servers" were installed over break, I will post the URL
for my web page where you can see how I put the class together.

Capstone Course

2000-01-11 Thread Annette Taylor

We are considering implementing a capstone course in our department.
If any of you have such a course, I would appreciate knowing how
you have gone about instituting the course and how it defines, for
you what a "capstone" experience might be.

also, please tell me your school's size, department orientation,
# majors and # seniors so we can assess what you do relative
to what we might be able to implement here.

Replies to list are fine, since others may be interested; also replies
to me are fine, I can summarize them eventually for everyone else.

thanks for any input

I _was_ also one of those not receiving TIPS. Happily, I just recevied the first
batch of messages early this afternoon.

Thanks, Paul, for the reminder of the web archives. Through them I was able to
spot one reply (Ken's) that I had not received. I want to take this
opportunity to
express my thanks to those who replied to my request for information on C++.
As it
turns out, one of my regular classes has been cancelled and I was forced to
pick up
another one that, unfortunately, is offered at the same time slot as the course in
C++.

Anyhow, it's great to be back on TIPS.

I'm among those not currently receiving.
May I point out that one alternative is the TIPS archive at

It's a few days late, but everything is there.

To those of you who are receiving TIPS I would like to point out that there
are many of us who, because of problems that are fearless leader is working

wondering about the reduced traffic on TIPS, that is probably the reason.

Random Thought: The Best Thing

2000-01-11 Thread Louis_Schmier

The Spring Semester began yesterday. As I joyously watched the
empty, placid campus come alive, suddenly pulsating with movement and
sound as if resusitated by a "crash cart," it suddenly hit me as if does
every first day.

The best things about education aren't things. They are people.

Make it a good day.
