history of psych help!
Just found out that I'll probably be teaching History of Psychology this summer starting TOMMORROW! :( I've never taught the class before- so if anyone has any ideas about resources, projects, films etc, I'd appreciate it! I'm already planning to look through ToPs. There are only 9 people in the class, so there could be a nice seminar feeling to it. TIA- Karen *** Karen L. demos for younger students
Hi all- I've been invited to participate in a Women in Science workship for 5th grade girls- the purpose is to expose girls to different science careers. I thought I would try to give an overview of different "types" of psychology- learning, cognitive, social, etc. Lecture is simply not going to cut it for these kids, so I was wondering if anyone had any good classroom demos that could be adapted for this situation- its a 30 minute workshop. I've already decided I'll do the conditioning demo with pixie sticks- I'm looking for quick, fun activities that would show them psychology is not just listening to people's problems! TIA- Karen **** Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
student interaction
Hi- I was wondering if anyone has a reference that supports the idea that allowing students to get a chance to know fellow students at a more personal level can help foster a better classroom atmosphere for learning or interest? TIA- Karen Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
general education requirements
Hi all- I'm part of a committee that is trying to propose a general education course along the lines of "psychological wellness''. We have 5 divisions of general ed requirements- one of which is entitled 'Health and Wellbeing" Currently, the university only offers a course out of the pe dept for this division. I was wondering if any tipsters offer similar courses at their university and could point me to web sites or resources that would help our arguement that a psychological oriented course would be an appropriate alternative to physical health course. Thanks in advance-Karen ******** Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
organizing seminar course
Hi all -- This fall I'll be teaching a psychology of women seminar course- its the first time for me both for the content and for teaching a seminar class- if anyone has any suggestions for either aspect of the course, I'd be grateful! I have already planned to use a textbook and suppliment with outside readings. Thanks-Karen ******** Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
films using psychology
Hi all- I know I've seen a list of films to show in class which illustrate different points in psychology- so could someone who had the foresight to save those lists forward them on to me! thanks-Karen btw- maybe he/she should just post them to the list, to avoid the inevitable "I'd like a copy too" messages that are sure to appear! :) **** Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Teaching intro psych: objectives
Hi all- our dept also has generated a list of objectives for intro psych- which I have posted to my web site. If you go to ASU homepage, then site index, "education", then "psychology" then "faculty", then "Karen Yanowitz"- go to my intro page and its under core objectives. (takes much longer to type directions than it will actually take you to find them!) Right now the objectives are very closely tied to Zimbardo's and Gerrig's book. Next semester we are working on more general objectives, as each perso who teaches intro will select their own book. We also give a common final exam based on these objectives- I'm curious if other depts do the same. Hope this helps- Karen ASU homepage; http://www.astate.edu Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
searchable index for TOPS
Hi all- a while ago someone posted a message regarding a searchable index for Teaching of Psych journal- could whoever maintains that site please let me know where it is? Thanks!-Karen Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
development of stm
Hi all-- In Cognitive this morning, I was explaining that information can be encoded differently in stm depending on type of info etc - student asked if there were developmental differences in ability to encode- for example acoustic vs visual-- that stumped me!- anyone have an answer? (btw- I did go on to talk about working memory- so if the term stm is "offensive" think about this question for phonological loop vs sketchpad!)- TIA in advance- Karen ******** Karen Yanowitz, Ph.D. Dept of Psychology and Counseling Arkansas State University State University, AR 72467 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
