[tips] The Cult of Statistical Significance

2010-10-14 Thread Richard Hake
Some subscribers to TIPS and TeachEdPsych might
be interested in a recent post "The Cult of
Statistical Significance" [Hake (2010)]. The
abstract reads:

**
ABSTRACT: Math-Teach's Domenico Rosa has called
attention to the review of Ziliak & McCloskey
(2008) by Olle Häggström (2010). According to
Häggström, Ziliak & McCloskey's major point is
that "many researchers are so obsessed with
statistical significance that they neglect to ask
themselves whether the detected discrepancies are
large enough to be of any subject-matter
significance."

Consistent with that outlook, in "Lessons from
the Physics Education Reform Effort" [Hake
(2002)] I cited the position of many
psychologists and biologists that the "effect
size" is a preferred alternative (or at least
addition) to the usually inappropriate t-tests
and p values associated with Null Hypothesis
Statistical Significance Testing (NHSST).

Nevertheless, many educational researchers (even
some physicists) still utilize *only* NHSST to
gauge the significance of their research results.

"After 4 decades of severe criticism, the ritual
of null hypothesis significance testing -
mechanical dichotomous decisions around a sacred
0.05 criterion - still persists. This article
reviews the problems with this practice,
including its near-universal misinterpretation of
p as the probability that Ho . . . .[[the null
hypothesis]]. . . . is false, the
misinterpretation that its complement is the
probability of successful replication, and the
mistaken assumption that if one rejects Ho one
thereby affirms the theory that led to the test.
Exploratory data analysis and the use of graphic
methods, a steady improvement in and a movement
toward standardization in measurement, and
emphasis on effect sizes using confidence
intervals, ands the informed use of available
statistical methods is suggested. FOR
GENERALIZATION, PSYCHOLOGISTS MUST FINALLY RELY,
AS HAS BEEN DONE IN THE OLDER SCIENCES, ON
REPLICATION." [My CAPS.]

2010-10-14 Thread Joan Warmbold
Thanks Chris as examples provide the best insight into how that
presentation style works. I'm impressed and now plan to incorporate it
as another option for presenting course concepts. However, I would
assume that this organizational style requires more prep time . I
happen to think that's a good quality BTW.

RE: [tips] Prezi

2010-10-14 Thread Paul C Bernhardt
Like any technology, the tricks do become tired if used indiscriminately.
Tricks should be content relevant. One thing about Prezi that I dislike is that
it forces the 'pan and zoom' trick, it is just the fundamental method of moving
from one content item to another. Therefore, if the content is not well-adapted
to that kind of presentation, it will suffer rather than be enhanced. I think
the recommendation that timeline material and that which can be arranged in a
reasonable 2 dimensional are helpful for Prezi is correct. For much of the
material we present, not so much.

RE: [tips] Prezi

2010-10-14 Thread Frantz, Sue
I wrote a blog on Prezi earlier this year:
http://sfrantz.wordpress.com/2010/04/28/prezi-an-alternative-to-presenta
tion-slides/. It will give you a quick overview of how Prezi works.

I concur that it's useful if the linearity of powerpoint leaves you
feeling handcuffed. Although, if you use 'presenter view' in
powerpoint, linearity is less of an issue. (To use presenter view, your
computer needs to see your projector as a second monitor.) [Yeah, blog
on that, too:
http://sfrantz.wordpress.com/2009/11/26/powerpoint-2007-presenter-view/]
.

A word of warning: The motion effects in Prezi can make some of your
audience members nauseous.

2010-10-14 Thread Shearon, Tim
David
That's a good synopsis! I'm also working on some presentations for
neuroanatomy, psychopharmaology, etc. I tried it in other classes and didn't
like it. BTW- our library staff absolutely loves Prezi! I'm thinking that
relates to the same non-linearity of the task (they are often presenting to 1st
year classes on how to do library searches). So for those teaching Research
Methods it is a good tool for design and searches.

I too have tried Prezi but do not use on a regular basis.
I is definitely NOT a replacement for PowerPoint.
If you just want to save money, use OpenOffice.org for free.

Prezi works best with concepts that are naturally hierarchical and
spatial. I am working on a Prezi for Neuroanatomy. It could work well
with geography or history (using time-line as organizing structure).

So, it is not a replacement for PowerPoint. It is has a different
purpose. PowerPoint is linear. Prezi is based on cognitive maps.

A while back, someone sent a link to a video of someone committing a
crime (wandering around a building). Afterwards, a video was shown of 6
people and you were asked to chose who had committed the crime. The
point was that no one in the line up had, but many people picked
someone. Can someone forward that link to me? Thanks!!

loving everybody all the time and being nice, right? Well, dogs already know
how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

So live like a dog:
Live simply; Love generously; Care deeply; Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure
ecstasy.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass..
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them
gently.

Sorry Allen as I had made the incorrect assumption that you are a
psychologist. How lucky are we that you participate on TIPS. And you
did have a book in your hands as I noted on amazon a published critique
of Freud--_Seduction Mirage: A Exploration of the Work of Sigmund
Freud_, a book I certainly plan on purchasing. But your post, in and
of
itself, was very compelling as well as humorous. As you so aptly say
at
the end of one of Freud's convoluted explanations, "who could make this
up.?!"

As I'm sure Chris will agree, though such rivalries sometimes play a
role in the positions taken by the respective proponents, what matters
in the end is the calibre of the work and the arguments. Whatever the
rivalry between the Viennese and Paris "schools" of
psychology/psychotherapy at the turn of the twentieth century, Janet's
critiques of psychoanalysis were insightful ("The Journal of Abnormal
Psychology", 1914-1915, pp. 1-35; 153-183), as was his later
observation: "The psychoanalysts invariably set to work in order to
discover a traumatic memory, with an a priori conviction that it is
there to be discovered… Owing to the nature of their methods, they can
invariably find what they seek."

In Freud's case, claims of opposition motivated by anti-Semitism have
tended to be over-stated (the Nazi period excluded, of course). In his
monumental volume *The Discovery of the Unconscious* Henri Ellenberger
noted: "The [Freud] legend considerably exaggerates the extent and role
of anti-Semitism, of the hostility of the academic world, and of
alleged Victorian prejudices" (1970, p. 547). On misconceptions about
alleged anti-Semitism in regard to the Minister of Education's failing
to ratify Freud's nomination in 1897 for promotion from Assistant
Professor to Associate Professor at the University of Vienna, see Frank
Sulloway's *Freud: Biologist of the Mind* (1979, p. 463). (He was
eventually promoted in 1902.)

"I now turn to psychoanalysis, the source of more, and of darker, smog

I'm sure Koehler (trained as a physicist under Max Planck) had his
legitimate doubts about psychoanalysis. One should keep in mind, also,
the ongoing intellectual rivalry between Berlin and Vienna at work
here. My wife once suggested to a friend of hers from Berlin, who was
experiencing some personal difficulties, that she might seek out a
therapist of counselor. The instant and definitive reply was "We are
Prussian, not Austrian!" There is a religious aspect to the this
rivalry as well (Prussian is Protestant, Austria Catholic).
Interestingly, the one obvious conflict that was probably NOT at work
in Koehler's remark was anti-semitism. The other major Gestalt
theorists (Wertheimer, Koffka) were, of course. Jewish (though Koehler
was not).
