[tips] Fwd: Essay on importance of class size in higher education | Inside Higher Ed

2013-01-29 Thread Christopher Green

You may have heard some researchers arguing recently that class size does not
matter to learning (a view that governments, always keen to cut costs, are
happy to endorse). It turns out that what you choose to measure is the
critical factor. Class size matters to nearly every variable apart from
straight information-transfer. In formation is important, to be sure, but it
is hardly the whole ball of wax. Here is a summary of a study that shows what
 large classes lose.

The lack of reality represented in this article that any college prof
would readily recognize is the lack of boilerplate that more and more
colleges are required to include in the syllabus, such as statements
on plagiarism (usually block quotes from official documents),
statements on handling students with disabilities/handicaps/whatever
the politically correct term is today that also often include block

quotes from official documents, as well as how the final course
letter grade is determined from the final numeric grade and how
the numeric final grade is determined from the course components.

And the most glaring omission from the syllabus is any mention of
how many times one can use one of my grandparents died excuse
during the semester. Clearly, a newbie.

Then again, he *is* teaching an English course, he appears to be
an adjunct, and clearly has no intention to teach again at whatever
imaginary college he is affiliated with. No wonder colleges are

trying to eliminate tenure especially in the humanities; see:
http://chronicle.com/article/Dodging-the-Anvil/63274/

So, Adam Mansbach might be having a living fun at the expense of
others but he shouldn't be surprised if some, underemployed adjuncts,
say something that is a variation of the title of his very popular book:
STFU!

[tips] teaching clinical/developmental psych website?

2013-01-29 Thread Jonathan Mueller
Gary's question about a clinical psych listserve reminded me that I wanted to
inquire about the existence or development of a teaching clinical psych website
(as well as other psych areas). As you may know, there are some very good
websites for the teaching of different courses in psychology, including:

Personality -- http://personalitypedagogy.arcadia.edu/pmwiki/pmwiki.php

Stats and Research Methods -- http://www.teachpsychscience.org/default.asp

Ed Psych -- http://teachingedpsych.wikispaces.com/

Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience -- http://gocognitive.net/

Introductory Psychology -- http://www.intropsychresources.com/

Attraction and Relationships -- http://www.scienceofrelationships.com/ (not as
much a teaching site, but includes teaching resources)

Social Issues -- http://makingconnections.redlands.edu/

Social Psych -- http://jfmueller.faculty.noctrl.edu/crow/

Does anyone know of good teaching sites for other areas of psychology, such as
clinical or developmental?

If you would like to develop such a site, as an individual or a team, there is
help out there for you. Some of the above sites got started with an APS
Teaching Fund grant. Additionally, as the creator of the social psych site
above, I have some experience in this and would be willing to help you get
started. Faculty have found these teaching sites to be quite valuable, and it
would be nice to see us expand their offerings.

[tips] Need some humor help

2013-01-29 Thread Carol DeVolder
Dear TIPSters,
I am looking for films or film segments that I could show in my laughter,
humor, and mirth class. At this point I have covered Freud's psychoanalytic
view and Gruner's superiority model (and related ones) and would like to
show an example or several. Do any of you have suggestions for films that
might fit the description? Feel free to suggest activities, too. I have
several guest speakers lined up, but would really like some hands-on
activities.
Thanks as always,
Carol
