Beat me to it, though I wanted a Fisher Exact (and you've reversed the
categories for Radiologists and Controls). Fisher Exact p = .107

So, n.s.

In the discussion of this topic, it seems to me there's an implicit
assumption that not seeing the gorilla is a bad thing; that
radiologists, whose business it is to see things in an X-ray,
_should_ have seen the gorilla if psychology hadn't messed them up.

I disagree. Their business is not to see gorillas but to see cancer.
Their skill is at least partly in knowing how to ignore informatiion
not relevant to the critical task (detecting gorillas), and
maximizing success at what they're being paid for: to find cancer.

JC:

My comment earlier was on this point. Do radiologists confirm that lung is
cancer free and all areas are healthy (which they could not do for the
gorilla-covered area or for natural flaws in images if such occur), or do
they simply detect cancerous regions (which again would be unknown for any
hidden area on the image). So unless they can detect flawed sections of the
image, their judgments must be compromised by imperfect images. Perhaps they
are also attuned for expected flaws as well as cancer indicators, but are not
attuned for gorillas.

What would happen if you simply asked ... is this a high quality image? or ...
are there any flaws in this image?

Take care
Jim

RE: [tips] Inattention blindness in radiologists

2013-02-15 Thread Stuart McKelvie
Dear Ken and Tipsters,

Radiologists had up to three minutes to freely scroll through each of 5 lung
CTs, searching for modules as we tracked their eyes. They clicked module
locations with a mouse. The gorilla was entered on the final trial.

The naïve observers were given 10 minutes teaching about now to identify
modules then completed the same task as above.

Note that afterwards everyone was asked if they noticed anything unusual when
re-exposed to the gorilla slide. Everyone saw it.

Sincerely,

Stuart

Re: [tips] Inattention blindness in radiologists

2013-02-15 Thread Claudia Stanny
Stephen is correct in his recollection of the superior memory for chess
positions only when master players are asked to remember chess positions
from genuine games. They perform like novices when confronted with pieces
randomly arranged on a chess board. (Chase Simon, 1973, Perception in
chess, *Cognitive Psychology, 4,* 55-81)

Also related to the training of expertise in visual search thread begun by
Stephen:

Look at the work of Shiffrin and Schneider on controlled an automatic
processing (the 1977 *Psychological Review* articles). In the first
article (Schneider Shiffrin,* 84*, 1-66), they document the improved
speed and accuracy of visual search under controlled mapping conditions,
when targets are always targets and distractor stimuli are only used as
distractors. Although accuracy for targets improves dramatically and
becomes very fast, the participants devote little processing to the
non-targets and have no idea what these might have been. (They are little
more than blurs and the targets pop out when they appear.)

In the second article (Shiffrin Schneider, *84,* 127-190) they document
the cost associated with this expertise. In one experiment in this series,
they ask participants to search for targets in only two of the four areas
where stimuli appear (one diagonal of the 2X2 display matrix). Under
controlled mapping conditions, trained participants made errors when a
target appeared in a two-be-ignored area of the matrix just before a target
appeared in a to-be-attended area. The first target draws attention to the
to-be-ignored cells of the matrix and this diversion of attention reduced
accuracy in detection of the target.

Re: [tips] Houdini horse

2013-02-15 Thread Joan Warmbold
Thanks Gary. An amusing story as well as a funny and impressive video
showing a mare who has figured out how to open an amazing variety of
locks. It was shaping but self-shaping of sorts. Apparently she enjoyed
playing with things with her mouth from the get-go and soon progressed to
fooling around with locks. Imagine that eureka moment when her 'fooling
around with a lock' succeeded in opening it! Whether by intent or
fortuitous, as Pasteur once said, Chance favors the prepared mind!

Have a great Presidents' Day you all.

Okay, not exactly Clever Hans, but still cleverly shaped behavior. I am
not sure what kind of locks they are talking about here either.

[tips] Sweat Much?

2013-02-15 Thread Mike Palij

Harvard Superstar researcher Pardis Sabeti (who appears to be giving
Joe Ledoux some competition in the rocker/researcher area; Google
her name) has some of her research written up in the popular media.
See:
http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-human-evolution-genes-20130215,0,7710369.story

The article focuses on her research that minor changes in the genome,
specifically EDAR, may have produced changes that may have had a
profound change in how humans interact and how they could adapt
to a hot environment. Quoting from the LA Times article:

|The small change, substituting one chemical letter of DNA for
|another, may have helped humans in Asia survive crippling heat
|and humidity by endowing them with extra sweat glands, the
|scientists reported Thursday in the journal Cell. It may also
|have made people with the mutation more attractive to the
|opposite sex by allowing them to grow thicker hair or fuller
|breasts.

If the above true, then Kate Upton has a lot to be grateful about
for EDAR. ;-)

P.S. If you are unfamiliar with Kate Upton, check out last and this
year's Sports Illustrated swim suit issue. ;-)

[tips] Russian Meteor And Dash Cams

2013-02-15 Thread Mike Palij

As most Tipsters must now know, being the news mavens that they
are, a meteor blew up in the sky over Russia today. Evidence of the
meteor's streak and explosion was provided by numerous car dash cams
that captured the meteor's fate. This event, of course, leads to a
natural question:

Why do so many Russians have dash cams?

The Wired website is also concerned with this question and has
provided one answer; see:
http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/02/russian-dash-cams/

Quoting one person who commented on the story:
|The sheer size of the country, combined with lax - and
|often corrupt - law enforcement, and a legal system that
|rarely favors first-hand accounts of traffic collisions has made
|dash cams all but a requirement for motorists.

|
|Just like New Jersey

Either that or Russians really love to post videos to YouTube
or the Russian versions of YouTube (for the curious, URLs
are provided in the article).

[tips] The cruise from hell/ Seligman

2013-02-15 Thread michael sylvester
It would appear that passengers who spent days stranded at sea,in what has been
dubbed The cruise from hell would fit in well into
Seligman's Learned helplessness paradigm.A friend of mine who was on the
cruise was so happy to see land that he texted LAND AHOY!
No cannibalism was reported. Btw,is there a Marine Psychology specialty? Can
you imagine teaching a Semester at sea and faced with this
predicament?
