[tips] statistics teaching: SPSS vs R

2014-08-20 Thread Jim Clark
Hi

We teach statistics using SPSS, but I wonder if any people have been switching
to R? Here's a recent post on R's popularity.

[tips] Internet Research: How Do You Sleep At Night?

2014-08-20 Thread Mike Palij

The tech company Jawbone makes a fitness tracking device
that records activity level, when one goes to sleep, when one wakes,
how long one sleeps, etc.

This data apparently is stored in a format that Jawbone can
easily access and they have used it to determine sleep characteristics
for users of the Jawbone UP tracker in different cities around
the world. For more on the UP system, see:
https://jawbone.com/up
and see the Wikipedia entry for the Jawbone company:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jawbone_%28company%29

NOTE: I have no financial interest in Jawbone. I don't use/wear
their products. I am only interested in how they use data from
their consumers to reach inferences about the characteristics
of those consumers and, under the assumption that those
consumers are representative of the cities/areas they live
in, what conclusions can be made about the cities they live in
because the mass media certainly don't seem interested
in this issue.

Anyway, an employee at Jawbone analyzed the sleep data
(and steps walked data) and posted the results on the company
website blog; see:
https://jawbone.com/blog/jawbone-up-data-by-city/?ClickID=ca74s7apaz4pzzvikeaqwlzwsikpax4xaksxkq#newyork

NOTE: Perhaps we should expect companies to release their
research results in this form in the future. It certainly beats
having to wait for external peer review and publishing in a
journal.

This analysis has been picked up by popular news media
sources, such as the NY Daily News; see:
http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/new-yorkers-bed-early-study-finds-article-1.1909123
NOTE: NY UP system users apparently go to sleep earlier,
at least relative to other UP system users in other cities;
unclear whether NYers who don't use UP also go to sleep
earlier -- I'll leave it to the reader to think up why this might
be the case.
And the Washington Post; see:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/08/20/21-of-americas-biggest-cities-average-fewer-than-seven-hours-of-sleep-each-night/

The first sentence in the WP article is:

Americans might run on sleep, but those living in the country's
largest cities don't appear to run on much.

This statement is only true if the UP users are truly representative of
the cities they live in but there is no demographic information provided
on the participants. Otherwise, the WP article should start with
A poorly described sample of UP users in the U.S. imply
One wonders whether race/ethnicity, income level, gender, and other
factors show significant differences among UP users in a city (as
well as how well the levels of these variables are represented in
the samples).

Just another example to use for research methods.

I'm still using SPSS but my informal impression is that R is gaining
in popularity, especially in graduate programs. The cost difference
is probably the key factor: whatever IBM is charging for SPSS
licenses versus $0 for R. For those who are unfamiliar with R, see:
http://www.r-project.org/

If one is skilled in using SPSS, then learning R will be difficult
because
of significant proactive interference (N=1 as myself as a subject,
however,

there is anecdotal evidence that SPSS users experience this though this
is not unique to R, similar experiences have been reported for Stata).
Getting to the same level of proficiency with R that one has with SPSS
will involved a significant amount of time and effort (assuming that one
uses SPSS through syntax and not the point and click menu system).

Unless IBM makes SPSS low/no cost for colleges/universities,
one can expect that they will drop SPSS because of cost-cutting
and the only question is whether one starts early or late in making
the transition. It is unlikely that IBM will reduce the cost of SPSS
to make it competitive with R. At NYU there is a version of SPSS
that is available to students through a virtual lab that contains
various licensed software packages. Faculty are not allowed
access to this, consequently, I have no idea what version of SPSS
is available there nor can I use it during lecture to show how to use
it. Things like this is sure to turn off faculty to using SPSS in
teaching

in the future.
