Hi,

When I try to start apache with the mod_jk module, I get the following

Here is my configuration:

Thank you very much.

What do I need to do to getTomcat to work with enterprise architectures?  Can it be done at all or do I have to use a weblogic or something comparable?  Download j2ee and include jar files in classpath?  Or is there more?  How must I organize directory structures?

Re: JSP 404 Problem

In addition to the online documentation
(http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat/src/doc/index.html) there
are several good books that cover setting up Tomcat etc. See for example,
³Web Development with Java Server Pages² by Fields & Kolb.

Try the following: clean out the directory $TOMCAT_HOME/work. That's where
the file you referenced is located after Tomcat creates its wrapper around
your original jsp file. I don't guarantee this will work but it often does
after one has changed the jsp file and somehow Tomcat doesn't recompile it
properly.

"Permission denied" after changing from mod_jserv to mod_jk

2001-02-11 Thread Gert

Hello,

I wanted to change my runnimg tomcat-apache-configuration from mod_jserv
to mod_jk.
With mod_jserv I had no problems runnimg my web-application

But now I get the follwing error-message from the web-server, whenever i
try to access a directory
or a servlet (JSP-Files are being executed):

Apache-Error-Msg: "You don't have permission to access /hekdb on this
server."
Apache-Error-Msg: "You don't have permission to access /hekdb/login on
this server."

The strange thing is, that the preintalled examples are running.
For example I can see the content auf the webapps/examples by calling
http://localhost/exapmples

But I can't find any difference in my own configuration and that of the
examples-webapp.
the web.xml files are valid and ok (It works with mod_jserv)

I left the server.xml unchanged (in respekt to the jserv-Konfiguration).

The remaind unchanged, too.
All that has chaged where the Mount-Commands
(by the way: where can I find a syntax description of JkMount?)

I've tried everything I could imagine to fix the problem,
but nothing worked :-(

Has anyone of you an idea of what I'm doing wrong?
I'd be very happy if you could help me.

mod_jk.conf-auto + ajp13

2001-02-11 Thread Rob Tanner

Hi,

I went through the archives, and saw this same question asked a number
of times, but no satisfactory responses. An auto generated conf is
nice to have (especially as it remembers to include all those little
details us poor humans sometimes forget) except that it always
specifies the ajp12 connector and the documentation gives several good
reasons why we ought to use ajp13.

Other than not using it at all or modifying the ApacheConfig.java
source (which if I were a more experienced java hacker, I might
tackle), is there any other option -- i.e., an environment variable or
a setting in server.xml, etc?

If not, does anybody know if the development team plans to release a
solution in the near future?

Can someone suggest to me what Apache and/or other OpenSource products could

I don't necessarily need all of what BEA has to offer at this time, however,

Servlet as welcome page?

2001-02-11 Thread Ritwick Dhar

Hello,

I want my servlet to handle all requests to the webapp. The servlet is
defined in the web.xml as mainservlet, like so:

mainservlet

com.foo.bar

mainservlet

/start

How can I make this servlet handle the request http://servername/webapp ?
I'm assuming I need to tweak the welcome-file element in web.xml, but I
can't quite get it to do what I want. Any examples?

(I tried searching in the archives, but all questions are concerned with
html or jsp files)

Thanks

If you want to have a servlet handle just the initial page, just map the
servlet to index.html. One thing is that you might have to actually have
an index.html file - it can be empty - to trick Tomcat into serving it
up.

That's what I've been doing -- I don't use mod_jk.conf-auto at all.
The point is that I have to maintain another file by hand that I
shouldn't have to, a file almost exactly identical to mod_jk.conf-auto
other than specifying the ajp13 connector. Is there a way to get
mod_jk.conf-auto to use ajp13 by default, otherwise, what's the purpose

Re: mod_jk.conf-auto + ajp13

2001-02-11 Thread Tom Woteki

I understand what you are saying, but you only need manually update the auto
config file when you actually add a new web app. Up until that point the
regenerated config file remains constant. You don't even need to touch it
while you are revising an existing app.

Further, you could run Tomcat stand alone, debug any new app, then just
before putting it into production (with Apache) you would manually alter the
auto config file.

Having said that (which you may already know), I know of no way to
accomplish what you are suggesting. Given Apache's recommendation to use
ajp13 it would seem that the auto config file should be generated that way.

errorpage.jsp: Can't convert javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter to java.io.PrintWriter

2001-02-11 Thread Jason Novotny

I've been learning JSP with this great book from manning.com and
I've been trying to write an error page. According to the book, I should
be able to do the following:

<%@ page isErrorPage="true"%>
The following error has been detected:

<%= exception %>

<% exception.printStackTrace(out); %>

However, when I try this I get the following:

gpdk/_0002fjsp_0002ferror_0002ejsperror_jsp_14.java:143: Incompatible
type for method. Can't convert javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter to
java.io.PrintWriter.
 exception.printStackTrace(out);
   ^
1 error

What's the secret to printing a stack trace to the page?

Thanks, Jason

location config

2001-02-11 Thread Alfred Tsang

Hi,

I am using windows 98 with tomcat
v3.2.1
I have a problem that when I tried to run some demo
from other book have servlet example, and I always get 404 not found
problem.

my http root : c:\wwwroot
and I put all .class file in folder name servlet
and the html file name servlet.html

I used IE and typed http://localhost:8080/servlet/servlet.html
gave me 404 not found on IE, and typed http://localhost/servlet/servlet.html was
able to load the page, but I couldn't use the servlet feature it's
programmed.

The html file load a class extend Applet and the
class will call some servlet when it runs. So, how should I config the tomcat so
I can change the 8080 port to read the .html file?

Thanks all

Using a servlet superclass

2001-02-11 Thread Jill Stephenson

I have a number of servlets in my application that need to
perform common initialisation, etc. So I was thinking of
creating a superclass that has an init method that does all
of the common work, eg.,

public class SuperServlet extends HttpServlet {
  public void init() {
// do common initialisation stuff in here
  } // init
} // SuperServlet

Then all the workers servlets would extend SuperServlet
rather than HttpServlet, eg.,

public class WorkerServlet extends SuperServlet {
  ...
} // WorkerServlet

This seems to be OK, until I implement init in the
WorkerServlet, as the init method in the SuperServlet
does not then get invoked. While I can call super.init()
in the WorkServlet, I want this to be handled automatically
as I can bet on someone forgetting this step, eg.,

public class WorkerServlet extends SuperServlet {
  public void init() {
// don't want to have to make this call ==> super.init();
  } // init
  ...
} // WorkerServlet

Is there any way to implement this ?

RE: Using a servlet superclass

Yes.

Have your WorkerServlets implement a procedure called childInit or
something, which is basically an empty procedure in the SuperServlet. Then
call this function as the last (or first) call of the SuperServlet init
function. This is much like how GenericServlet makes init() a convenience
call instead of init(ServletConfig config).

Paul

Help needed with Tomcat config on Red Hat 7

2001-02-11 Thread David

I'm a Linux newbie and have downloaded the tomcat 3.2.1 binary RPM
from rpmfind and installed it on Red Hat 7 using GnoRPM. I didn't have
any problems doing this, and tomcat is loaded successfully during
bootup of the system. However, when I try to pull the demo page up on
port 127.0.0.1:8080, it seems to hang up on the reply from the server.
Does anybody know what I've done wrong with the config?

I'm using the Sun Java2 JDK and JRE 1.3 in the default install
locations. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Using a servlet superclass

2001-02-11 Thread Tom Woteki

Perhaps this will work, though I am not so certain of the life cycle of a
servlet to say for sure:

Define the default (i.e. no argument) constructor for SuperServlet (its
signature is: SuperServlet() ) within which you call init. Any child of
SuperServlet should then automagically call init (or any override of it)
when its own default constructor is invoked: default constructors are
automatically invoked to the top of the inheritance hierarchy.

You can't cast the JspWriter to a PrintWriter so what you
have to do is create a StringWriter, use that to make a PrintWriter
and print the stack trace to it. Then just use the toString()
method of StringWriter to get a single string with the full trace.

Re: errorpage.jsp: Can't convert javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter to java.io.PrintWriter

2001-02-11 Thread Chris Janicki

I don't have time to test this, but I think the problem is not in the
stack trace, but the previous line. Try replacing it with:

<%= exception.getMessage() %>

I think the <%= %> expects a String or native.

FYI: A good way to learn/debug JSP is to look at the "*.java" file
created by the server. In your case, look at line 143 of
_0002fjsp_0002ferror_0002ejsperror_jsp_14.java

RE: Using a servlet superclass

2001-02-11 Thread Jill Stephenson

That would work, however I am trying to avoid to place any extra
requirements on what the WorkerServlets have to implement. Having
to implement childInit() instead of init(), vs calling super.init()
in their init() method is pretty much the same.

I guess what I really want is for init to work the same way as
constructors work in ordinary classes, but I can see that's just
not going to happen ...

RE: Name of Apache "handler" for mod_jk

2001-02-11 Thread Ray Thomas

Okay, I tried that and it gave me an "Internal Server Error." I think the reason is
that I have multiple workers defined and running. How do you specify a worker when
using "jakarta-servlet" in a SetHandler or AddHandler directive for Apache. I was
guessing and tried...

   SetHandler jakarta-servlet.workername

...but that didn't work so I also tried...

   SetHandler jakarta-servlet workername

...and Apache won't even start with that.

Is there a way to specify a worker when mapping URI's to mod_jk via the
jakarta-servlet "handler" name?

Thanks!

Re: errorpage.jsp: Can't convert javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter to java.io.PrintWriter

2001-02-11 Thread Gilles Laborderie

The error message tells you that it's trying to convert "out" from
JspWriter to a PrintWriter which is the type expected from
printStackTrace.

Try:

<% exception.printStackTrace(new java.io.PrintWriter(out)); %>

This will creates a new PrintWriter from the existing "out"

RMI in linux

2001-02-11 Thread Merwin Yap

Not a question regarding tomcat but maybe someone might know...

Im using linux, jdk1.2.2 and tomcat. I'm having a problem with rmi
registry... how do you start rmi regsitry?
I read that its different from windows and it has something to do with
the ports. Could anyone explain it more to me...
like how would i bind it to a port i like to use like 8080 or
something. It said something like "rmiregistry &" which seem
to work but my binder code thows a ConnectException or
ServerException...

Thanks,
Merwin

Just consider that this should probably only be used on a test/development
system since presenting stack traces to site visitors is probably not a
grand idea.

Re: RMI in linux

2001-02-11 Thread Chris Janicki

'rmiregistry' runs on port 1099 by default. You can specify another port
by supplying it as the argument ('rmiregistry [port] &'). The biggest
difference between Windows and Unix (Linux), is that Unix only lets
'root' use ports below 1024.

An even better option for many apps is to run the registry right in their
own JVM. The java.rmi.LocateRegistry class has static methods that will
try to find a registry on a given port; if unsuccessful it will create an
instance for you within your JVM.

The only reason to run 'rmiregistry' separately is if you need to supply
its functionality as a shared resource (like DNS).

Answer 1: No

Answer 2: But wait, you can make the init() method in SuperServlet FINAL.
Then when someone tries to overide init(), the compiler will say no.

Now add empty methods
initExtend() and initExtend(ServletConfig c) to the base class.

Call these methods _last_ in SuperServlet's init methods.

Document that derived classes should implement these methods if they require
additional initialization. With this approach the mistake cannot be made.

Jim

RE: apache 1.3.17 and mod_jk on solaris

2001-02-11 Thread Dan Kern

I used gcc ver. 2.8.1

I went over your very informative page carefully. I built apache with
mod_ssl and a few other modules. Here is the result of 'httpd -l':

Compiled-in modules:
  http_core.c
  mod_env.c
  mod_log_config.c
  mod_mime.c
  mod_negotiation.c
  mod_status.c
  mod_info.c
  mod_include.c
  mod_autoindex.c
  mod_dir.c
  mod_cgi.c
  mod_asis.c
  mod_imap.c
  mod_actions.c
  mod_userdir.c
  mod_alias.c
  mod_access.c
  mod_auth.c
  mod_example.c
  mod_so.c
  mod_setenvif.c
  mod_ssl.c

I didn't install the MM shared memory library. Also, I didn't add the
following when I built apache:

   --enable-rule=SHARED_CORE \
   --enable-module=most \
   --enable-shared=max \
   --enable-shared=ssl

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

What did you use to compile apache?
gcc or the Sun cc?

Use gcc...
You may want to glance at my notes on compiling Apache/mod_jk for Solaris

RE: mod_jk on Tru64 kills Apache

2001-02-11 Thread Willy Skjaveland
Title: RE: mod_jk on Tru64 kills Apache

I have problems with mod_jk - and get error message already when running "apachectl configtest":
Syntax error on line 8 of /usr/apache/tomcat/conf/mod_jk.conf-auto:
Cannot load /usr/apache/libexec/mod_jk.so into server:
Unresolved symbol in /usr/apache/libexec/mod_jk.so: __pthread_mutex_destroy

I've given up mod_jk and will try mod_jserv.
