JK/JK2 List

2003-11-05 Thread Joao Medeiros
Hi folks,

Does anyone know is there is a distribution list for the JK/JK2 project
similar to this one? If not are there any plans or people in this list
wanting to start one or aplly for setting up one so that we can start
getting some real input, guidelines and orientation from the people
behind the whole thinh rather than fragments and pieces of information
scattered across the net that makes it hard to understand and put
together...

I've got Tomcat talking to Apache no problems with JK and there is quite
a lot of info on this topic. When it comes to JK2 however I find it just
a bit too hard and have to confess I've let it sleep for a while.

Just a thought,

Make sure you have a folder named 'Tomcat User

RE: tomcat port on the web

2003-09-30 Thread Joao Medeiros
Bopana,

You can have your Tomcat web server running on port 8080 but not a good
idea since that port is normally used for the administration server.

Having said that however is also true that you can change the admin
server port to whatever you want assuming you have the rights to do it
and that it is free.

Check your 'server.xml' file under '$TOMACAT/conf' and look for the
string ''. Under it you should see another
string like 'mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tomcat on Linux

2003-09-28 Thread Joao Medeiros
Hi folks,

I've decided to start doing some testing on Tomcat under Linux for which
I have installed Redhat 8 which is now up and running, downloaded the
JSDK for Linux which is also setup and downloaded the Tomcat files but
before I go ahead and start installing it I was wondering if you could
help me out determining a few things:

- Shall I create a new user, i.e. 'Tomcat' and install the server under
it or shall I just put it under ROOT? I know that if I do choose to
install it under a different user other than ROOT I'll have to setup
special execute permissions so the server can run on port 80 for
instance...

- I read somewhere that in order for Tomcat to run as a daemon one will
have to use the jsvc tool. Has anyone got any experience in doing it?

TIA,
/JM

RE: Accessing GlobalNamingResources

2003-09-25 Thread Joao Medeiros
Miguel,

I assume you have defined a context under your host definition.
Resources can de defined under each context to make it local to that
very same application and that's what I would do if I wanted for
instance to define a parameter and assign a value to so I can retrieve
later on in my application.

Sorry if this is not exactly what you were looking for but perhaps
someone in this forum might be able to shed some light to it.

This is however how I would go about doing it:

Create a context under your host (you probably have done that already).
Under your context create as many parameter resources as you'd like.
Use the following code to retrieve the values assigned to your
parameters in your application:

<%@ page import = "javax.naming.*" %>
String parm = "";
   try
   {
  InitialContext initCtx  = new InitialContext();
  if(initCtx == null) throw new Exception("Boom - No Context");
  Context envCtx  =
(Context)initCtx.lookup("java:comp/env");
//replace any_parameter with the parameter name as defined under your
web.xml file.
  parm= (String)
envCtx.lookup("any_parameter");
   }
   catch(Exception e)
   {
  out.println(e.getMessage());
  e.printStackTrace();
   }

It works for me so it should work for you as well unless you have some
specific requirements that don't allow you to use this solution.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply João.

I've tried the code with no success, all I got was:
javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: Name leaders.archive is not bound
in this Context
...

My server.xml file has the following GlobalNamingResources:

 factory

org.apache.catalina.users.MemoryUserDatabaseFactory

 pathname
 conf/tomcat-users.xml

Do I need to create a ResourceLink in the application context in order
to read a value in the GlobalNamingResources?

Thanks again,

2003-09-25 Thread Joao Medeiros
Miguel,

I'm assuming you want to access the values as defined for a given
parameter in your server.xml or in your web.xml files depending on
whether you want them defined globally or per application.

Try the folling code in your jsp file and replace the parameter name
with the appropriate one.

<>

   String my_var = "";

   try

   {

  InitialContext initCtx  = new InitialContext();

  if(initCtx == null) throw new Exception("Boom - No Context");

  //Context envContext = (Context) initialContext.lookup
("java:comp/env");

  Context envCtx  =
(Context)initCtx.lookup("java:comp/env");

  my_var= (String)
envCtx.lookup("my_parameter_name");

   }

the GlobalNamingResources, defined in server.xml, from a servlet,

without creating a ResourceLink in the servlet's context?

Make sure your tomcat-users.xml contains at least the following line:

and the following line as well:

The field 'password' in the example above is set to 'manager' but you
can change it to whatever value you want.

Also, if you want to be able to use the manager servlet you will need to
add another role called 'manager' and to add that role to the user
'admin' as follows:

The password for the user 'admin' is not 'setup'. What I meant is when
you install Tomcat the username and password are setup as a step of the
install procedure.

Please check the tomcat-users file as explained below.

You can also try Microsoft Netmeeting if you're using Windows 2000 or
Windows XP. It allows you to connect 2 or more computers charing the
same desktop (yours). Students will be able to see what you're doing and
I'm not sure because I've never tried it but I think it also allows for
others to interact with your desktop as well.

Anyways, just another option for you to think about :-)

  Tomcat 4.1.24 / WINXP SP1

  Has anyone successfully run Tomcat off a CD? I know this is a little
out of the ordinary. We have a J2EE app which I would like to teach to
students. The problem is having a quick setup environment for the
students with having to install minimal software. I have adjusted the
variables in the startup.bat, setclasspath.bat, and catalina.bat files
to point to a CD, but am still not having any luck.

  Any thoughts or suggestions?

  Thanks in advance,
