In case anyone else has had a similar problem, here is my solution. Although starting tomcat results in the message... Using CLASSPATH: \tomcat\classes;C:\tomcat\lib\ant.jar;C:\tomcat\lib\jasper.jar; C:\tomcat\lib\jaxp.jar;C:\tomcat\lib\parser.jar;C:\tomcat\lib\servlet.jar; C:\tomcat\lib\webserver.jar;C:\jdk1.3.1\lib\tools.jar ...because I had j2ee.jar in jdk home\jre\lib\ext it was picking up this file first which was causing some kind of conflict. Removing j2ee.jar from jdk home\jre\lib\ext solves the problem. Where did you put NumberGuessBean.class ?? Yes, that's where it is, as per the defualt file structure when you unpack tomcat. It's a completely clean install, I'm just trying to get the examples working.
