RE: will ROOT (/) context, folder "hello" interfere with context (hello) ?

2004-07-09 Thread Justin Ruthenbeck
It's genally a good idea to use the ROOT context as merely a redirection
feature, _especially_ if you've got any possibility of naming conflicts
(like you're suggesting). By this, I mean make your ROOT context simply
do a redirect (either an HTTP redirect or a JSP/Servlet redirect,
depending on what you need to accomplish) to your "real" default web
application. It will eliminate problems like this -- naming and
implementation/function should be independent.

As for your question, you can't practically get to ROOT/hello in the case
you're describing.

2004-07-09 Thread Ivan Jouikov

Something just popped in my
mind.

If you have a ROOT context
which has a folder named hello,

And you have a context named
hello

When you request localhost:8080/hello/

Which one are you gonna get? ÂThe ROOT context or the
hello context? ÂI will try this
out tomorrow, but I wonder how tomcat handles this?

Re: Connection pooling -- Hello Doug

2004-04-25 Thread Masood Reyhanei Hamedani
Hello Doug

1- My ROOt.xml doesn't have any error.That problem caused by wrong copy and paste.

2- I changed the order of Parameters in Resource tag but wasn't useful.

3- Look, I don't see any error message.When I check the number of connection in
Mysqladmin, in 4.1.18 the number of connection doesn't rise quickliy but in 5.0.19
for each open page we have a distinct connection.

4- I think this problem caused by Common-pool-1.1 and Common-dbcp-1.1 jar
files,because in 4.1.30 that have the same jar files you also see that problem.

5- A test,if you copy thoes jar files in 4.1.18 and rename them, connection pooling
doesn't work such as 4.1.30 and 5.0.9 without any error message.

6 - And another test, my java file is like this :

package pooling;
import javax.sql.*;
import javax.naming.*;
import java.sql.*;
public class webPooling
{
  Connection mySqlConnection = null;
  public webPooling() //Class constructor
  {
  }
  public void init() //Connection Creator
  {
try
{
Context ctx = new InitialContext();
if(ctx == null )
   throw new Exception("ERROR IN CONTEXT INITIALIZATION!!?");

DataSource mySqlDatasource = (DataSource)ctx.lookup
("java:comp/env/jdbc/UKwebpooling");

if(mySqlDatasource == null)
   throw new Exception ("ERROR IN DATASOURCE CREATING");
else
   mySqlConnection = mySqlDatasource.getConnection();
}//try
catch(Exception e)
{
  e.printStackTrace();
}
  }
  public Connection getConnection()
  {
 return mySqlConnection;
  }
}

if you add this code to the end of this java file :

  public void closeConnection()
  {
try
  {
  if(!mySqlConnection.isClosed())
   mySqlConnection.close();
}
catch(Exception ex)
{
 System.out.println("ERROR IN CLOSING THE CONNECTION (POOL)");
 ex.printStackTrace();
   }
  }

and call this method in your Jsp file, in 4.1.18 you don't see any error message and
Connection pooling works so good, but in 5.0.19 you see this error message:

Connection is already closed.
.
and so many Exceptions.

8- If you create a Statement in java file, that error message doesn't appear.

What is your idea?

With thanks.

masood.

Simple "Hello World" JSF... NO GO

2004-04-16 Thread Mike Sowka
Hey Folks,

I had used Tomcat5 for some simple JSP school projects, and now that I'm
evaluating Websphere Studio (for it's "swell" drag and drop features,
can't believe how easy it is!) I've run into a stump... and I refuse to
even consider using anything but Tomcat for serving purposes.

My "Hello World" JSF has NOTHING but a JSF template + a simple "Hello
World" paragraph in it... this worked great when serving in the
Websphere 5.1 Test Server, but as the Websphere 5.1.1 claims Tomcat4.1
is a supported server an this should work just as well. App fails to
deploy with:

Caused by: org.apache.commons.logging.LogConfigurationException: Class
org.apache.commons.logging.impl.Jdk14Logger does not implement Log

full log file attached...

Any suggestions are MUCH appreciated,
Mike

Yes, Tomcat will resolve the DTD to a local copy. One thing that you
should note:

callme_sanjay>  Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.2//EN"
callme_sanjay> "http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd";>

Above, you've used the public identifier for the Servlet 2.2
specification, and the system identifier for the Servlet 2.3
specification. Depending on which of those Tomcat bases the local
resolution on, you may end up getting the wrong DTD.

Google for "doctype syntax".

Tomcat includes the DTD for Servlet 2.3. It automagically tells the XML
parser to use it's shipped-with DTD when parsing your web.xml file.

Hello regarding web.xml file ...

2003-11-11 Thread sanjay paithankar
Hello,

I installed tomcat4.1.24 on a standalone machine ( not
connected to internet )
Now there is a DOCType statement in the web.xml

http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd";>

So now how Tomcat will get the
"http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd"; as the
machine is not on internet ?

and also want to know what is the meaning for "PUBLIC"
in this statement.

regards

Move your "Book" folder up one directory to the "webapps" folder.
Make sure you have a directory named "WEB-INF" in your Book folder.
Restart Tomcat.

 http://localhost:8080/Book/AdminBook.jsp should work for you.

Instead of adding the folder to the ROOT directory add ur directory (Book)
to the webapps directory and make chanes to your server.xml like point ur
context path to that directory. if everything goes well then
http://localhost:8080/Book/AdminBook.jsp will show up.

Maybe I missed this earlier in the conversation, but what exact JVM
version are you using?
I have seen something similar running Tomcat 4.1.18 on JVM 1.3.1_06 on
NetWare, using the Symantec JIT 3.10.21
We think it is a JIT bug, and it seems to fail a little bit sooner than
yours does (oddly enough, since yours fails early on)
But there might be a connection.

Never saw that error before, but if I was getting it I would investigate two
things:

1) JDK version

2) file system permissions

Neither may be correct, that's just what I would look for first.

RE: RE: Hello list / workers2.properties

2003-01-23 Thread Mike Bachrynowski
Henning

I am running WinXP professional, Apache2.0.43, Tomcat4.1.18, JK2-2.0.42
and JDK1.3.1 on
a test system (Intel Xeon 2.4 GB 512MB).

Tomcat4/conf "jk2.properties" is as supplied with everything commented
out.

Apache2/conf "httpd.conf" has a single added line after the other
LoadModules
"LoadModule jk2_module modules/mod_jk2-2.0.43.dll"

Apache2/conf "workers2.properties" is as follows:
##
[shm]
file=c:/progs/Apache2/logs/shm.file
size=1048576

# Define the communication channel
[channel.socket:localhost:8009]
info=Ajp13 forwarding over socket
tomcatId=localhost:8009

# Map the Thistle hotels servlets
[uri:/thistlehotels/servlets/*]
info=Map the Thistle Hotels servlets

# Map all jsp
[uri:/*.jsp]
[uri:/*/*.jsp]
[uri:/*/*/*.jsp]
[uri:/*/*/*/*.jsp]
[uri:/*/*/*/*/*.jsp]
info=Map all jsp

# Map the Tomcat examples
[uri:/examples/*]
info=Map the whole webapp

##

All is as per the "minimal install" documentation except for [shm].
I needed to add the [shm] reference to make
the JK2 connector work on WinXP...without the [shm] entry
the JK2 connector would not work for me.

I hope this helps.

Mike

Hello all

2002-08-12 Thread Aleksandr Shneyderman

I have browsed the archives and seems that there are a lot of questions
about the following error but there is really no answers that would be
a good solution in my situation:

We have an application that we were developing for a long time now and
it fairly extensive. Couple of days ago we decided to move from tc3 to
tc4 except that tc4 complains that it can not compile the jsp that tc3
was able to:

> Tomcat's Error

org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP

An error occurred between lines: 1 and 151 in the jsp file:
/glsApp/glsAddress.jsp

Generated servlet error:
/cms/freeware/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.4/work/Standalone/localhost/admissions/glsA
pp/glsAddress$jsp.java:157: Class org.apache.jsp.glsAddress not found.
 glsAddress addrClass = new glsAddress();
 ^

>>

It seems that tc3 had a different way of constructing the java code for a
JSP.
It used to put the servlets it generaetd in the packages with the names that
were
based on the subdirectory of the jsp file

So for example /glsApp/glsAddress.jsp would be in package glsApp but now
it is in org.apache.jsp. Why is it happening and how would I go about fixing
it. As I stated above the app is huge and going thru each jsp and checking
for this kind of error is just not feasible.

Does anyone know how would I fix this, without going to each file and making
sure that import statement is there?

Thanks in advance and have a good night,
Alex.

RE: hello sir

2002-07-16 Thread Clay Graham

Apache Ant is a Java-based build tool. In theory, it is kind of like Make,
but without Make's wrinkles.
Why another build tool when there is already make, gnumake, nmake, jam, and
others? Because all those tools have limitations that Ant's original author
couldn't live with when developing software across multiple platforms.
Make-like tools are inherently shell-based -- they evaluate a set of
dependencies, then execute commands not unlike what you would issue in a
shell. This means that you can easily extend these tools by using or
writing any program for the OS that you are working on. However, this also
means that you limit yourself to the OS, or at least the OS type such as
Unix, that you are working on.
Makefiles are inherently evil as well..
EVIL I TELL YOU!

The build.xml file that comes with Tomcat is for building Tomcat. Unless
you plan to enhance or modify Tomcat there is no need for you to touch this
file.

I do suggest you look into using Ant to build your web application. Ant is
another open source project from the great people at the Apache Software
Foundation. For additional information on Ant see

hello works, add jdbc and get casting error

2001-03-29 Thread Alan Batie

I got basic "hello world" working:

import java.io.*;
import javax.servlet.*;
import javax.servlet.http.*;

public class hello extends HttpServlet {
  public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
throws ServletException, IOException {
res.setContentType("text/html");
PrintWriter out = res.getWriter();
out.println("");
out.println("Hello World");
    out.println("");
out.println("Hello World");
out.println("");
  }
}

but this simple variant fails (the non-servlet version that follows it
works fine); stacktrace follows it all --- CastException seems to be the
key point, but I don't see how casting would be any different between hello
and jth:

import java.io.*;
import javax.servlet.*;
import javax.servlet.http.*;
import java.sql.*;

public class jth extends HttpServlet {
public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
throws ServletException, IOException {

String db = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/alan";

res.setContentType("text/html");
PrintWriter out = res.getWriter();

try {
Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver").newInstance();
}
catch (Exception E) {
System.err.println("Unable to load driver.");
E.printStackTrace();
return;
}

try {
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(db, "alan", "xxx");
Statement select = con.createStatement();

ResultSet result = select.executeQuery("select * from test");

out.println("");
out.println("");
out.println("Apache/Mysql/Tomcat/JDBC Test");
out.println("");
out.println("");
out.println("");
out.println("Apache/Mysql/Tomcat/JDBC Test");

out.println("Results:");

out.println("");
out.println("");
out.println("NameValue");

while (result.next()) {
String n = result.getString(1);
String v = result.getString(2);

out.println("" + n + "" + v);
}

out.println("");
out.println("");
out.println("");
out.println("");

select.close();
con.close();
}
catch (Exception E) {
E.printStackTrace();
return;
}
}
}

non-servlet version:

import java.sql.*;

public class jt {
public static void main(String args[]) {
String db = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/alan";

try {

Yep :-)

Because the documentation is almost totally in text files of some sort, you can
submit patches to the docs the same way as you would for code patches -- by
including them (in the format defined on the Guidelines pages) in a mail message
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] One of the existing committers can then
evaluate the suggestion and incorporate it as appropriate.

I wouldn't get too nervous about it -- we all started our involvement somewhere!

Doh. Someone asked and got an excellent answer to this issue just 4 days
ago... so nevermind, I'm lame, I'll try to do better.

Hey speaking of, I would like to contribute at least a little bit to the
project. Tomcat provided the encouragement I needed to get CVS working,
and while I certainly wouldn't want to take on a "committer" level... I
spent quite a bit of time reading the http://jakarta.apache.org/guidelines
but did not see how I could send in a patch (to the doc, for instance) for
consideration.

So, maybe that's a better topic to ask for a reply on? If I drafted an
"improvement" to the doc, how would I submit it for review? Just blab it
to the developer's mailing list? gulp

Sorry about asking a FAQ without searching the list more.

is the sample Hello World servlet linked properly?

2000-11-25 Thread Rob Leachman

Hello,

I just pulled the docs and sample Hello World project from CVS, about 2
minutes after I got Tomcat built. So I'm a newbie and perhaps a lame one
at that... or maybe it's the example? Oops I just remembered, I went
straight to the apache mod_jserv stuff and didn't try it thru Tomcat
stand-alone, maybe that's my problem.

I think I followed the instructions accurately, but like others on the
list I cannot seem to make the sample servlet work the way it should. I
get a 404 from the demo http://localhost/proj1/ page trying to access the
servlet link http://localhost/proj1/hello -- would think perhaps I should
just use http://localhost/proj1/servlet/Hello except then the image is
broken.

LMK what more info I should supply and I'll be happy to do so. Again, this
should be a "stock" build... but of course I probably missed or messed
some important detail.

Thanks in advance!

Re: hello and database connection

2000-11-22 Thread John Ellis

Carlos,

Try
http://www.codestudio.com
They have a product called PoolMan which you use with your regular SQL
Server driver to help manage pools.

For an MS SQL driver, take a look at the sun driver database:
http://industry.java.sun.com/products/jdbc/drivers

With poolman, you will not need a driver with connection pooling support.

Hope that helps,

John

To fix this you'll need to edit your c:\config.sys and either add, or modify
this entry

SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /P /E:4096

You've run out of environment space within your DOS shell. This will
increase it to 4096 bytes, so when the CLASSPATH gets set, there
is space for it.

Problems with the most Basic Hello servlet and jsp.

2000-11-09 Thread Mark Koscak

I have encountered some problems setting up Tomcat on
my Windows98 system. If anyone could throw up some
suggestions I would be most appreciative.

Here are the steps I have taken.

Downloaded the latest stable version of Tomcat -->
jakarta-tomcat.zip 2.26MB (2,372,384 bytes).

I have run WinZip and extracted tomcat to C:\

The resultant directory structure is

C:\jakarta-tomcat   \bin
\conf
\doc
\lib
\src
\webapps

I have set JAVA_HOME to C:\jdk1.3
Root directory of java installation

I have set the PATH to include C:\jdk1.3\bin
The directory that holds executables for javac, java,
javadoc etc

I have set TOMCAT_HOME to C:\jakarta-tomcat
The root installation directory

This is the result attempting to start tomcat.

C:\jakarta-tomcat\bin>TOMCAT.BAT start
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Starting tomcat in new window
Using classpath: C:\jakarta-tomcat\classes
C:\jakarta-tomcat\bin>

Here is the result attempting to run tomcat.

C:\jakarta-tomcat\bin>TOMCAT.BAT run
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Using classpath: C:\jakarta-tomcat\classes
Exception in thread "main"
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/tomcat/sta
rtup/Tomcat
C:\jakarta-tomcat\bin>

When I use my browser IE5.0 to open the simple test
example located at
C:\jakarta-tomcat\doc\appdev\sample\web\index.html

My browser opens this html page ok, howerver when
running the jsp I manage to retrieve some html output
and gif image back to my browser window but values for
the following text labels all come back
blank/null/empty.

Context Path:
Path Information:
Query String:
Request Method:
Servlet Path:

Also from
C:\jakarta-tomcat\doc\appdev\sample\web\index.html

If I choose to run the servlet, IE explorer comes back
with a standard error page saying that the page could
not be found.

Thank-you for your consideration and any suggestions
you may have.

Regards
