Topband: Topband INactivity

2011-03-01 Thread Diane and Edward Swynar
Good Day All,

Is it just my singular imagination here, or has general activity on
160-meters declined significantly in the past few weeks...?

With the exception of contests, the number of CW stations seems to be hit
miss, at best, on the band anymore...even my plaintive general CQ calls in
the early morning hours lately have failed to put in the usual 3-4
callsigns in my logbook here (ZERO responses is the norm of late).

Where is everyone...? Are conditions really all that bad, or has the gang
discovered new radio thrills in some other part of the RF spectrum...?

Hi Eddy,

I would say that activity has been fairly normal, but propagation has
been above average, especially over the CQ 160 SSB test. My log book
has far more entries in it than for any other year since being in ZL (we
arrived 10 years ago) Last weekend, John G3XRJ and I even managed an
SSB QSO - the first ever. Unfortunately prop seems to be pretty much
back to normal now.

Topband: Propagation for the SSB test?

2011-03-01 Thread Cecil Acuff
I know the list is mostly CW enthusiasts but how did propagation seem to you
guys for the SSB test. A group of us operated Field Day style... generators
and the works. Had a brief opening to EU in the evening and worked one VK
early in the morning of the first day. Things didn't seem as good the
second day with less of an opening to the northeast but did manage to work
HI with a better opening to the west. No DX to be found around our daybreak
both days...bummer.

We're in the deep south and was thankful for no lightning static.

Activity seems down in the last two nights since the SSB contest. That may
be normal. The first was very noisy, but last night was quiet -- still not
much heard in Wyoming.
